Diet, Nutrition and SupplementationPost here for supplement reviews or nutritional advice. If you're trying to get "ripped abz" THIS is where you should be.
It's the little things that add up. Got a little thing?
Okay. So hopefully the title got you to look.
I've been really concentrating on my diet lately. (cleaning it up)
I'm learning to cut corners and avoid excess fat (the bad kinds)
Fat tastes really good. Let's admit it. So avoiding fat while not sacrificing the taste is what it's all about. Yes?
I have a little tip I'll share here and was hoping to hear any tips others might have that they use.
Tip: I hate diet salad dressing.(it tastes like horse pucky)
I love ranch dressing. I always get the dressing in a cup on the side and dip my fork in it between bites of salad. You still get the taste but actually eat very little dressing.

I premeasure nuts. When I buy a bag I seperate 1 oz servings in small aluminum foil wraps. This way you know how much you ate and don't indulge.
I also add fat at the end of the cooking process so I get more flavor with less amount.
I use dressings that are good for you - Caesar (low sugar), Balsamic Vinagrette so it's actually better to have more.
One small thing I picked up a few years ago was parking further away from the building at work. It's not much but sitting at a desk most of the day, any extra walking couldn't hurt.
Diet-wise...bring your lunch and keep a strict food log.

Jimbo, I think you can make the original Ranch dressing from the mix, and it shouldn't be too bad at all. I remember my grandmother making this when I was a kid, and as I recall, the powdered mix is combined with buttermilk. I might be wrong, though - you may have to add mayonnaise as well. Even if you do, the Canola-based Mayo's are a reasonable choice to use.
BTW - I have used the Ranch Powder in the past combined with cottage cheese in a food processor to make a good-for-you Ranch Dip.
Olive Oil and Balsamic Vinegar is great on a salad, and I also like Dijon Mustard combined with Balsamic Vinegar as a dressing.

I never thought of using cottage cheese. I'll have to give that a whirl!
With my diet...it's all a big experiment at this point. I've never counted calories before and certainly never worried about macronutrients. Now...I'm paying attention to everything. We will see what works for me over time.
I make Spinach Artichoke dip out of cottage cheese. Delicious.
If I'm cutting I always have a handful of nuts after every meal to keep me full.

OK I think you may have seen Gala's I think they call it Labna, I call it well hung yoghurt.
Basicaly:
Place a sieve over a bowl
Line it with muslin
Add low fat/fat free thick yoghurt
Cover the top with muslin or clingfilm
place a weight on top leave in fridge over night.
next day take solids out of fridge
Then using a small portion of the well hung yoghurt you can make some of the following combos by just mixing them in with a fork:
balsamic vinegar and herbs
balsamic vinegar and mustard
Honey and mustard
Worcester sauce, balsamic and a dash of tomatoe puree (yummy bbq)
Mint and cucumber pulp (cucumber whizzed in a blender) akla tzatiki
Think of anymore let me know
I know this wasnt in line with the original question but thought it relevant

dont know if you can get mushy peas in the US if you cant just boil away peas mash them cool and reheat gently and let it cool. Use some of the well hung yoghurt above (few spoons) add low cal quacamole seasoning and hey presto low fat guacomole dip, instead of ready made tortillas, toast some pitta bread and cut it into triangles (if ya slice the pitta in two and grill it you can almost get the real tortilla effect.)
