Cool Amputee

Hello everyone. I am new to this site and wanted to try and get a little help in getting back in shape. I was involved in a accident a few years ago which resulted in me being a below the knee amputee. At the time of the accident I weighted 165lbs. It has been 7 years and my weight is at 245lbs. I was hoping that someone could could put me on the right track as far as trying to lose A LOT of weight with nutrition and possibly supplements that would help burn the fat off at a fast rate. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome, Rod.

I think the best thing is good basic, solid nutrition. Check out www.johnberardi.com for lots of good info in his articles.

I don't believe there is a supplement that will "help burn the fat off." There are no shortcuts. Eat well, avoid the junk, get enough exercise (I realize you'll have to adapt or customize to your needs), and have patience and perseverance. I wish you well.

Welcome Rod.

Just to ditto Bill's post, look to exercise and iet (not the same as dieting) . try to do multi-joint exercises (check out the faqs for programs). Your amputation below the knee will not limit you for most kinds of resistance training (including squats and deads - one legged squats, also called pistons are very challenging and king deads will be dopable as well.) I do not know what exercises you could do for the amputated leg (perhaps check with your rehab trainer, ask Bill Hartman in the injury forum). Anyway, good luck and welcome!

All I can offer, is this guy who used to work out at my gym. amputee on left arm just above the elbow.
he'd use a spot on his amputated side, and push with his 'stub', and was actually pretty symmetrical in his chest. obviously without any elbow flexion he couldn't work what was left of the bicep and tricep...but he did it.

you can definitely get ahead of the game with good diet, etc.

One of the biggest and strongest guys in my gym in an above the knee amputee. He benches the 130 lb DBs and does heavy rows. He also runs. He's got a special shoe (or maybe it's a whole special leg?) for running. He's pretty amazing.

Glad you're here and wish you all the best. With determination, your goals CAN be met!
