Default Meal Replacement Bars

I had a lot going on this weekend so I didn't grill the salmon for my lunches like I normally do. Instead, I bought some South Beach Meal Replacement Bars. I actually read the label before I bought 'em but bought 'em anyway. Even though they do taste good, I'm already feeling guilty!

They have "fractionated palm kernel oil" in them which is about the second worst one out there. This oil is about 81% saturated fat! I tried to post the chart but it didn't work.

Guess they are for weight loss, not for health!

As I throw another handful of Edamame into my mouth, I must ask, what's wrong with soy? I thought it was supposed to be good for you.

I ordered one box each of the Metabolic Drive protein bars and I like them a lot. The taste of the cookie dough bar is just unreal. The MD bars use a whey/casein mix.

Yeah, that was another problem but less of one to me. Still, I do avoid soy most of the time. My wife likes to buy veggie burger patties and they have soy protein, too. I'm DOOMED!

On the other side of the protein coin and one of the main reasons I don't avoid soy like some do...

dos.

True, but perhaps dos just doesn't microwave food in plastic containers...

Even those who are more against soy don't warn much against things like edamame and soy sauce.

It's the more concentrated and processed soy protein that has been pointed at.

So, dog, I won't get man-boobs if I continue to eat edamame? Or should I really not eat that anyway?

I don't have man-boobs and I eat it. Maybe one bag of frozen a week. It's a veggie.

How much edamame can one eat?

I like the wasabi-coated Edamame, but I think that's bad for you. I think they're slathered in some kind of trans-fat goop. I should just buy some tubes of wasabi paste instead and suck down small amounts for that addictive sinus-cleansing blast, because it's the wasabi part that I really like!

I decided that I hate most soy products and have stopped eating most of them. Actually, I hate almost all of the protein meal replacement bars, regardless of whether they contain soy. I've been eating LaraBars instead, even though they're not high in protein. Usually the only time I eat bars is before an endurance workout anyway.

That sounds pretty good, actually!!

Have you tried the "Naturally More" Peanut Butter that's sold around here, fortified with flax seed and egg whites?? It's pretty good, too. Apparently the developers were from Auburn. It's similar to the Power Butter fortified PB sold in some of the "health food" stores only a lot less expensive.

Considering some research says the ALA in flaxseed oil increases risk of prostate cancer...while other research claims it reduces your risk of cancer....I'm avoiding flax for the time being. I'll stick with fish oil instead.

For the same reason...too many open verdicts on soy protein for men...I don't seek it out. Occasionally I toss a couple Morningstar sausage patties/links in with my eggs to change things up a bit, but besides soy sauce, that's the extent of it for me as well.

Used to be big on bars til I realized 99.9% of them are complete junk. If bars work for your eating habits, start making your own, and control what goes in them.

Yeah, but fish oil would be NASTY in peanut butter!

Yes, I've tried it. My dad lives in B'ham and he had some when I was up there visiting last year. He LOVES pb and I agreed with him that this was a better choice than his Peter Pan. He won't eat any natural varieties, but Naturally More stays mixed like Peter Pan, so he liked it.

It tasted pretty good, but not so good that I'd hunt it up again. I think my dad is still eating it, so everybody has different tastes. It sure had a good looking list of ingredients!
