After reading this a few weeks ago I went ahead and bought (I hadn't had red meat in along time - hormones etc.) free/range grass fed NY Steaks at Trader Joes (I don't remember what I paid) as well as some "New Zealand" Organic Ribeye steaks from Whole Foods. I actually *like* the gamier texture of organic beef, most people abhor steak that isn't marbled but in my opinion the texture of fat isn't what I look for in a girl, or in my beef.
No I'm not rich, and this was a few weeks ago that I had beef, but I would absolutely recommend to everyone to try out Organic/Free Range beef. I have yet to try out any other cuts, JP what cut do you recommend/how do you cook it?

thanks for the bump! I've seen the flyer at your gym, but didn't realize it was the folks that sold at the river market. I've passed by there but never stopped to inquire about the prices etc, cause I'm never there at a time convenient for meat.
So, I'll definately try.
At Kroger, they have a brand of chicken called Smart Chicken that is organic and air chilled, and it is really really good. Tastes fresh. It is expensive, but I've been lucky on occasions to find it reduced about 1/2 price. Not only do the hormones/antibiotics bother me, regular chicken is always packed with some sort of salt bath, WTF? When I want meat, I want it without crap added to it!

I've been buying " Laura's Lean Beef" from Kroger, when I buy ground beef. I haven't seen any other cuts , but haven't really looked for them either.
Thanks for the Smart Chicken reference, Cappy. I will look at our Kroger and ask for it if I can't find it. I already buy organic milk, eggs and beef...should definitely add this to our repertoire.

I like Laura's leen beef too. I occasionally see her brand of steaks, etc too.
You can also get ground buffalo at kroger, and even ground lamb now(which I believe is naturally less processed or injected than cattle)
try the chicken and let me know if it's not the best chicken you've ever had

You don't have to worry about hormones or steroids in chicken, as the FDA has rules against their use in poultry. ( http://www.fsis.usda.gov/Fact_Sheets...ocus/index.asp http://www.fda.gov/cvm/hormones.htm http://www.snopes.com/horrors/food/wingcyst.asp)
A lot of naturey-type companies like to put "Hormone-free!" or some such thing on their labels, which is true, but it's not any different than any other poultry. Farmers are permitted to use anti-biotics, and it might be better to get the free-range, anti-biotic free chickens, since they may be a little better for you and might be a little more humane. You don't have to worry about hormones in poultry, though.
Hormones and all kinds of other stuff is allowed in raising beef, however, so going organic may be more important there.

Great info JP, I had no idea this was available at the River Market. I'll have to stop by there and pick some up.

Last time I went to the zoo and said that the bison looked delicious, the other patrons gave me dirty looks.
Apparently you are supposed to put aside your animals are food mentality before seeing them in cages.....

I buy bison meat from a family that raises them locally here in northern MN. Granted, it's a different type of meat, but is another great option. To find vendors, I imagine you can find a bison.org site of some sort; I know they have some by state.

I get grass-fed, drug-free beef from Tendercrop Farms (tendercropfarms.com) in Newbury, MA, but I'm sure there are probably a lot of places around the Boston/NH area. They also have their own poultry and eggs and fresh milk, and a lot of fresh veggies. It's a tad pricey ($4 for a half gal of milk (incl. glass bottle deposit), $4/lb for gr. beef, $3 for chicken, and anywhere between $5-15 for steaks depending on cut). It's WAY WAY better tasting than the grocery store crap and I feel better buying it. Now if only I could get paid more! Ha.
