Default Protein Shakes for the Lactose Intolerant?

I am doing TT to lose weight and I want to supplement with a whey protein + maltodextrin recovery drink after my workout (as per Berardi). I need something that will not cause a flare up of my lactose intolerance. Does that mean casein protein is out? Is any whey protein isolate as good as another? Specific product recommendations would be helpful! Thanks

Have you had protein powder problems, before?

Berardi is lactose intollerant and uses both Surge and Metabolic Drive. In one of his articles he said that some powders claim lactose free, but that most low carb ones are VERY low in lactose.

You might have to experiment with some...

ON Whey protein has added lactase--maybe try that.

Since Whey and casein are just milk proteins supplements containing them do not necessarily contain lactose. I believe Optimum Nutrition includes lactase in all their powders (I know they do for ProComplex as well as 100% whey). Most whey hydrolyzed whey products are so pure that all the native milk sugars have been removed.

Most companies will advertise that their products are lactose free. If the companies doesn't advertise this then I would start with Whey Protein Isolate products because they are highly purified. Scivation's Substance WPI has zero carbs I believe and comes in all kinds of good workout flavors (not just chocolate and vanilla). Like Lost Dog says I believe Surge and Metabolic Drive are also lactose free.

Wow, thanks for the detailed responses.
Sounds like biotest surge meets my post workout needs (follows Berardi nutrition principles for post workout since he designed it). It doesn't have casein does it?

Nope. Metabolic Drive does, though.

Wasn't casein recommended by Berardi to be a small part of all protein shakes to stop protein breakdown? Why isn't it in surge?
I am a little bit bothered by the line on the surge label that says its processed in a facility that processes shellfish. I have to decide if my (Jewish) religious ethic will allow me to take it...hmm...
I'll check out metabolic drive, too.

Casein isn't in Surge because good PWO shakes are designed to shuttle nutrients into your system ASAP. Surge contains hydrolyzed whey which is basically whey protein chopped up into smaller pieces allowing for faster digestion. Casein is digested slow and thus it isn't idea for during and directly after a workout.

However it wouldn't be contraindicated to use a protein blend (including casein) 45-60 minutes after your PWO shake. This will help give you sustained blood amino acid levels for a longer peroid of time in the hours following your workout.

I see, thanks for the detailed explanation! I think I will have to pick up some of this surge stuff, or maybe make my own out of one of the other proteins you guys mentioned + maltodextrin.

Just because you're not turning into a hermaphrodite (or not admitting it) doesn't mean that less virile males won't sprout vaginas after consuming a tasty edamame salad.

Anyhow, on this subject (soy, not vaginas), I'm curious about your take on this statement from Max Out Magazine: "Soy protein powder can be purchased without isoflavones (the potentially “bad” estrogenic phytochemicals). In this form soy is comparable to most protein powders."

I've read a lot of sites touting soy and those taking the other side. Each side seems dramatically slanted and deceiptful. So, now what?

I eat soy beans and plenty of soy products, but don't exactly look for extra soy protein when I can get non-soy protein.

This example is purely anecdotal, but the soy eaters that I know are pasty, pale, scrawny and flabby (at the same time), or fat.. Not exactly what I'm looking for in a body type. There may be plenty of soy eaters and/or vegans who are the picture of health, are strong and robust, etc. I don't know them.

I don't know much about the soy/anti-soy studies. If they were taken with typical vegitarians or vegans, it's likely that these people were just in poor health from idiotic diets. Perhaps a vegetarian or vegan that eats enough and the right foods and food combinations wouldn't have those negative effects of soy (male vaginas ).
