Diet, Nutrition and SupplementationPost here for supplement reviews or nutritional advice. If you're trying to get "ripped abz" THIS is where you should be.
The topic of artificial sweetners comes and goes around here but I've recently decided to either cut them out altogether or at least drastically reduce my consumption. I drank quite a few Diet Coke with Lime or Diet Pepsi with Lime for quite a long while. Recently, I've been buying Lipton's Diet Green Tea (Nestea has one out now, too) and these were tasty but they still had the artificial sweetners in them. However, if I brew tea at home, I'll normally use stevia.
So, I'm right now brewing my first batch of green tea in a new electric iced tea maker. I have the stevia ready to go. I hope this works out. I was just buying the other products for convenience.
Oh, by the way, I also drink lots of water but I tend to consume large amounts of fluid everyday. I normally have something in front of me most of the day and the variety is nice.

OK, electric iced tea maker. Where did you get this? How was the tea?
Hope you can get away from the diet soda. It's hard to do. I know it's a struggle with me.
I actually bought mine at Target but, based on a Google search, they are pretty common. I didn't get a chance today to drink all I made - it makes up to 2 quarts - but it was fine with Stevia and lemon juice.
So, why are you struggling with this? I thought I was the only fanatic. Actually, I'm only just trying to move the right direction. I'm not really fanatical about this stuff... I don't think.

It's just a lot tastier than drinking water. Once I start it's hard to stop.

I quit soda my senior year of high school. I also quit fried food and fast food at the same time. I just quit them both cold turkey and never had a problem, I guess I'm a rarity though. Nevertheless, that's my suggestion, just quit it, do whatever it takes not to drink it. Ever. It takes about 3-4 weeks for a habit to change and you shouldn't crave it after that. I'm to a point now where even the smell or breathing the air that comes off a bottle of soda makes me gag.
And if nothing else works, think about the money you'll save just drinking water. I bet I've saved hundreds if not thousands in the last 5-6 years.

Just a quick good luck. I also dropped the sodas. I do not do the diet soda routine since I think it is not good for you either. The main thing I missed was the "lack" of carbonation. But like anyone will tell you who has stopped them, after a while you don't miss it. Things you though "flavourless "get flavour" because your tatse buds are not being overpowered by sweeteners.
I also dropped salad dressings and for the first time I actually tasted salad, rather than slurped up "French" or "Ranch" or "1000 Islands". If you use these dressings your are not tasting anything to do with salad, you are covering up the salad tatse.
Gook luck!!!

CRAP! I haven't had a diet soda for two days but I was ready for just one carbonated kick to get me going this morning. Now you guys are making me rethink it. I quit smoking about 25 years ago cold turkey (after about 10 years of smoking) so I know I can stop this but I think I will have one this morning and go back to my green tea for the rest of the day. Pretty soon, I won't want the soda at all (HOPEFULLY!) It's a hell of a lot better already than 6-7 a day like I was doing!
You can never have another one....If you do you could easily slip back into diet sodadum!
I know. I kicked it cold turkey for like 2 months and now...now I am addicted again. You can have my caffeine juice when you pry it from my cold dead fingers.
Og.

I quit diet sodas in february cold turkey. It was tough going from having at least 1 litre per day or more to nothing. I started to think that all the carbon dioxide and chemicals cannot be good for me at all. I am not a coffee drinker (never have, actually) so it wasn't the caffeine that made me want it, I think...i genuinely do enjoy the taste of a tall ice cold soda. If you are going to have sodas diet is definitely the way to go. But now I just stick to water, milk, proteins shakes and beer. As nature intended it.

I did have one this morning and it actually didn't taste as good as I remembered. I think I'll probably just cut way back from where I was. All things in moderation, right? Well, not ALL things!
When I was in college I was hooked on diet coke BIG TIME. It is almost embarassing. I would get to my dorm room and drink 2 cans in a row. I switched over to water with lemon and arranged my life so I never had the opportunity to buy any diet coke (this makes it sound like a real addiction). I rarely drink it now.

Nice.
Very nice.

Is there anything wrong with drinking caffeine free diet soda's that are aren't flavored with aspartame? I'm not aware of anything else in them thats really bad. For example, I believe Hansen's natural diet soda's don't even have colors that would stain your teeth. I like caffeine-free diet coke and most brands of diet root beer (but especially A&W).

I don't think there's much wrong with diet sodas with caffeine and aspartame, in terms of health effects (althouh I can't speak for what kinds of body comp effects they might have, but caffeine is considered an appetite suppressant). Aspartame really isn't that bad, and although caffeine isn't that bad either in terms of health effects, it might be better used prior to lifting. You could use it as a pre-workout drink!
I think some of the concerns about diet sodas and artificial sweeteners may be that they kind of psychologically condition you to like/want/need sweet things all the time, rather than produce specific harmful biochemical reactions. Diet and regular sodas do tend to be kind of acidic, though, which is something people who eat a lot of protein probably don't need.
