Default chicken, tuna, etc. Vs. Casein at bedtime

I was wondering if it would be alright to substitute chicken or other meats for a casein supplement for a pre bedtime snack? I always here about casein and whey's absorbtion rates but never for solid meat. If this isn't a good idea what is a good casein supp. for bedtime snack.

some tuna or chicken mixed with some cottage cheese and some almonds/cashews has become a favorite pre-bed snack of mine. I would have to think that solid food would absorb slower than any form of liquid calories, even including a casein protein.

Not 100% sure, but it seems thats the impression I get.

Matt

it's true that the powdered casein would absorb faster than whole-foods source such as cottage cheese (which you should be using anyway as whole foods trump supplements any day ). as far as meats protein release times, they vary. from the literature i've read, fish actually has the longest time out of meats but it's still lower than casein but not significantly more (~ a couple of hours). that's why you see studies use casein as the slow-releasing protein source.

Any suggestions on a casein supplement. Should it be a casein/whey combo or a casein/whey/soy combo or should I go with just casein. I've seen all different types. I know cottage cheese is good but I can't find one with a low sodium content. Just don't want to spend the money on it till' I know what my best options are. Again this is for night time snack.

check out trueprotein.com and the milk protein isolate. It's a mixture of whey and casein and I think the ratio is something like 20% whey to 80% casein, so you get the quick releasing benefits of whey and the longer lasting benefits of casein while you sleep.

The MPI at trueprotein is pretty good, but the vanilla BSL flavor is just so-so in my opinion. If you decide to try chocolate, let us know what you think of the flavor... that's what I'll probably order next time around.

The trueprotein website is awesome, but I was wondering how much of a difference there is between the absorbtion rates of hydrolized whey and whey concentrate/isolate. They claimed on the website that it was faster, but they didn't really say by how much and there is a large price difference.

Don't waste your money on the hydrolized whey. Just buy whey concentrate, IMO.

Besides, casein has proved to yield better results in studies anyway... and that's much slower than either hydrolized or concentrate whey protein....

...Oh yea and whole milk has proven more effective than skim milk for PWO...

So it seems that our "faster is better" approach for PWO nutrition is not necessarily gospel.

That is interesting. Do you have a link to the study?

i get ON's 100% casein (chocolate is quite excellent) most of the time - mixes fine and tastes really good, especially in oatmeal. the price isn't bad either if you shop around.

MCL, the study MM is talking about is discussed/summerized here:http://forums.menshealth.com/groupee...21/m/760102565

i was surprised myself that WM beat out SM.
