Default guacamole

I know this stuff is made from avocados which are healthy fats but I read somewhere to stay away from it. As a rule, are there bad things mixed in other that spices? I going to a mexican restaurant tonight and don't want to mess up.

A lot of times they'll mix things like full fat sour cream or whole cream into it, making it bad. I make my own, with just avos, red onions, jalapenos, garlic, and chili powder (with a squirt of lime juice). It's awesome! I know a lot of Mexican places going that way, but if it's a commercial restaurant, it won't be too healthy for you...

why does cream inherently make it bad?

I suppose its going to depend on how its made. In my food priciples class in college we made guacamole from scratch it just had avocados, onion, green pepper, black pepper, salt (not a lot), chile pepper and lime juice. I would think that would be ok. I don't know about the bag mix stuff but im sure it has preservatives and probably high fructose corn syrup (its in nearly everything).

If it's a REAL Mexican place, you're usually fine. They use E's and degerdahl's recipes, basically.

It's grocery store guac you usually have to watch out for.

Two reasons to watch out for guac, otherwise...

1. You can eat too much of a good thing, even with healthy fats. 1 avacodo is around 300 calories.

2. Whatcha going to eat that guac with? Chips?

Probably in a fajita. Maybe I'll go with just a teaspoon or two. As long as I go with no sour cream or cheese, I should be good.
I think this is an authentic mexican place, but there's no way to know. Plus we're going out with some new friends of ours and I don't want to start out with, "Can you tell me what in in your guacamole?"

Where do you live? As a So Cal native, it's a "foreign" concept to not know a real Mexican joint when I merely see the sign...

A couple of tsp of the worst guac is fine. It's still going to be mostly avacado. The worst guac I ever had mayo and some sugar in it (thanks, Mother In Law). But, if it's still green, then the percentage of avacado is high. How much mayo and sugar did I actually eat? Not much.

The tortilla's worse for you than the the worst guacamole, anyway.

The extent of my expertise in mexican food is: Taco Bell=bad, everywhere else=good.

Fair enough! Although, in one visit to Montana, I found that Taco Bell was the most authentic Mexican food around. A couple years later, it got better, though.

Depends on your goals, but I'd rather get my fats from good, clean sources. Alfredo sauce is one of the worst things you can put in your body, and it's basically pure cream and cheese. Same with deep fried foods. What makes those bad? Bad fats. You just have to pick your fats, and for ME, full cream is a horrible fat choice.

i'm seeing more places offering whole wheat tortillas these days, so if you see that option go for it. add some guac., grilled chicken and black beans and you're good to go.

grilled vegetable fajitas are an option as well if you can add some lean protein to it.

otherwise, consider it a cheat meal and have fun.
