Green Tea
So to further my efforts to improve my nutrition and my body composition, I will be trying to add Green Tea to my diet. But I currently don't drink any tea, nor does my wife. So I see the tea bags at the store and the bottled stuff, which I'm guessing is more expensive. I was thinking to make a large batch and stick it in the fridge for later consumption. I can't imagine drinking it warm this time of year.
Anyone have any methods or strategies for making a large batch? My mom and dad used to make regular brown tea in the microwave but I don't know how many bags to use with how much water, etc.?
Can you guys help me out? How do you all drink it? How do you make it? What kind do you drink?
Thanks in advance.
Ted

We have green tea bags in our coffee room here at the office. So I've never made it in bulk. But I like to make a cup (just use the bag in hot water) and add a coule packets of splenda. I would imagine it would be good cold too though. Everything is better with spenda.

I make cold green tea by putting in four bags into a 64oz jug. Leave it at room temperature for a day and then put it in the fridge. Doesn't get any simpler than that!

If you're going to use grocery-store tea bags, go with Celestial Seasonings "Authentic Green Tea". I believe it was Lou Schuler who had an article about store-bought green tea, and this brand was listed as having the highest EGCG content (that's the good stuff! ).
Wish I had the link...

I drink Arizona diet green tea...may not be as potent as 'tea bags', but works for me. I also take 2-3 green tea pills a day (50% EGCG).

As a Southerner I feel especially qualified to answer questions related to ice tea.
It's really easy.
1. Boil Water
2. Pour boiling water over several packets of green tea in appropriate sized container.
3. Add splenda to taste while hot
4. Stir
5. Let cool and place in refrigerator or serve over ice

I drink Japanese Sencha Green Tea.. and use ½ tsp of tea leaves per cup of water.. and infuese it for about 3 minutes.. (I always used to make it too dark up til a few months ago..) no sugar need it.. It's delicious.
A friend of mine got me to also drink it from my water bottle during xc-skiing.. very nice, specially the first hour when it still luke warm.. haven't tried it cold on summer hikes but will get to it for sure.
I'm also trying to get a new thing going by drinking it in a crystal wine glass while others are having white wine. With some meals it really goes well.

This is how I make it. I would say 12-14 bags per gallon...just experiment a little for your taste

if you're lazy like me, you can buy an Iced Tea Maker at walmart for under $18 - all you have to do is pour water in, add green tea leaves and ice in the container and come back 5 minutes later for ready iced tea - lazyman's paradise

How much do you all drink per day? Not sure what's recommended. I'm thinking CB has listed it in his TT Get Lean Manual. I'll have to look that up.
Anyone tried the Lipton Bottled Green Tea?

I drink about 4 8oz classes of iced green tea a day. I make it pretty close to what TG said. I put 10 green tea bags in a gallon bottle. Then fill it with hot tap water and let it sit overnight in the fridge. By morning I have cold green tea. I also buy that lemon juice that comes in a lemon shaped container and put a little of that in each cup. I think its called "Real Lemon." I drink one of my glasses for the day as a preworkout pick-me-up.

I've been doing it this way for a few months. It's a bit different then the other posted recipies.
Boil 1 gallon of water in a large pot.
Once water is boiling, remove from heat and add 12 tea bags.
Let sit for about 30 minutes, remove tea bags, transfer to a pitcher and place in fridge.
I consume about 8-12 oz per day.

Sounds like the water doesn't necessarily need to be boiling, just warm. My mom & dad used to have a jug they left out in the sun for a few hours and called it "Sun Tea". But that's just warming up the water.
So I've heard lemon, lime and splenda additions. Seems like I've also heard peppermint in other threads.
Thanks for all your help, going to have to try this.
Ted

Ive been reading about too much green tea inhibiting COMT (catechol-O-methyl-transferase)...something to do with it having anti-androgenic properties and increasing estrogen action. If this is true, too much green tea probably wouldnt be too good. Anybody heard of this?

BJ:
I've had the Lipton bottled green tea. It's pretty good. I like to add some honey to mine every once in a while. It sweetens it up.

I drink the hell outta Diet Lipton Green Tea. It comes in 12 packs and I get mine from Wally World. However, it does have 70 mg of sodium and phenylalanine as the sweetner. I'd just as soon that they didn't sweeten it but the alternative is to make my own all the time. I'm kind of a soda-holic so this is a better alternative.
