Default The Shangri La Diet

I almost hesitate to post this, but I will. Take it with a grain of salt, since I don't know that much about it.

It seems too good to be true, and it may be. But, I'm one of those people who feels hungry all the time. Really. All the time. Except when I'm full...

Anyhow, seems like a fad diet, or trick. The author, who I heard interviewed on the radio yesterday, claims that it's a way to trick your body into not being hungry (or as hungry). Sounds like my thing.

I have not read the book, and I doubt that I will, since he seems to have covered it all in the interview and in past articles and blog posts...

You can get the gist in the second link, but I'll net it out. Taking some sort of flavorless calories between meals surpresses your appetite, since your body does not associate those calories with any flavor. He suggests the virtually flavorless sugar water or a virtually flavorless oil (canola or extra light olive).

I don't think this can hurt me. I'm not going the sugar route, but since I take oil during the day anyway, I'll try it in between meals to see if it reduces my hunger. What can it hurt?

Anyone know more about this?

Are you familiar with the "Flavor Point Diet" by Dr. Katz at Yale?

This issue of flavor and satiety is interesting. It's common sense that people eat more when a variety of tastes/flavors are availabe. Isn't that what buffets and potlucks are all about?

I don't buy into the premise that you can lower your set point based on your diet. Perhaps you can help satiety with these tricks however.

These tricks may work for individuals who are highly motivated but lots of things work for the highly motivated. It doesn't seem like a valid strategy to combat the obesity epidemic on a national level.

Let us know how it works for you.

They mentioned something like that in the interview. I'm not famililar with the names, but had heard a lot of the concepts before.

I'm not so sure about the set point, either. I think it's mostly just tricking your body into not being hungry. It might be semantics...

We'll this experiment is done.

Did it make me less hungry? Maybe.

I eat every three hours or so and basically eat a fixed amount of food each tiime. I still found myself counting the minutes til my next meal, same as before. Then, after eating, I was still 'hungry,' but seemed a little less. Then, it was back to counting the minutes.

This may work for those people that just eat their 3 meals a day and don't count or track food.

Plus, I'm sort of an emotional eater. Not for me...

You might be better off with the sugar water option! I was able to do the oil. Wasn't pleasant, but no puking. I haven't puked in over 20 years (knock on wood).
