Default Question about Sushi

The guys at work have gotten me addicted to eating sushi. We go about once a week. Can some one tell me in general how healthy sushi is? I would think it is low cal, high protein, and have good fats but I've been wrong before.

There are worse things. The white rice is the only bad part.

Other than that, fish, seaweed, and veggies.

Do you like sashimi, too? That's just the raw fish, sliced up. No rice. If so, you could have some sushi, some sashimi, and maybe some miso soup and salad. That's pretty decent, right there.

I thought sashimi went either way. I like it with the rice. I've not had it without. Of course all the variation of rolls are awesome. I like the miso soup but I'm afraid the creamy ginger dressing on the salad could be a calorie booster.

I'm still a novice with all the names but I do like the stuff.

I eat sushi probably once a week. I love it. For me, I'll try to make sure I have a good run or bike ride on that day just so the white rice is going to work for me. I absolutely love it, and would eat it more often if I could afford it. I also always get miso and either some edamame, or a seaweed salad. Both are awesome!

A lot of places are offering brown rice sushi now, there are a few that have popped up in Denver. They don't necessarily like doing it, but whatever. So it definitely doesn't hurt to ask!

And there are far worse things you could go have with a bunch of co-workers. Especially in Texas!!

The only bit I would seriously watch out for is the sodium content in the soups and in the soy sauce.

Not sure how long this article will be available, but there was a blurb on sushi in the last issue of "Impact".

As emartin mentioned, there are far worse things to eat. It def has redeemable qualilties.

Oh and the floating sushi type places are pretty fun. have to make Shannon take me to that place again.

It's funny. Without fail you will hear the call come out at about 11:20 on Friday....[Imagine a Texas Drawl] "Who's going to eat bait!?"

Without fail 10 people always pile in to various vehicles and off we go.

I'm thinking the rice doesn't have that much impact. You would have to eat a lot of sushi to get a white serving of rice.

like others have said, keep an eye on the sodium in the sauces, the white rice, and anything labeled "tempura" and you're pretty much fine.

go with the low sodium (green topped) shoyu instead of the red salty one. that, and if you are lucky enough to have the brown rice option, you are set.

obviously avoid all the deep fried rolls and stuff.

i have yet to see brown rice offered here near me, and i'm in LA.

I've never seen brown rice offered, either (I'm also in the LA area). That would be great!

The place we frequent is nice enough to ask every time about the low sodium soy option.

I need to do some math but I don't think there is that much rice when it is all said and done. What about miso soup? Does it have the same salt issues. It taste like it.

We got once or twice a month. I usually get a lunch special with rolls, sashimi, miso, salad and I get them to boil my tempura veggies instead.

I looked up miso soup on calorie king....

You do not want to know...

Some other brand name ones say 800mg

I suspect the 10,000 is outa line, but I would also say it is very high either way

I don't go often.. but when we DO go to the restaurant, a Sushi ( and sashimi ) is always my first choice.

The low Sodium Soy Sauce is a good idea.. I'll start asking for it when I go to Sushi.. if enough people ask about it.. they'll end up having some. I have been offered (and accepted ) brown rice once.. but come to think of it.. I'll start asking for it.

I'm from North Dakota were there is no way to get fresh salt water fish, so I always stay away because Iworry about food contamination. Good rule of thumb for eating fresh sea food is only eat it in months that have a "R" in because seafood deteriorates much quicker that other animal protein.

I think that was before freezers...

I wouldn't think they'd be great at seafood up there, but it should still be fresh/frozen, right?

Most frozen seafood is MUCH safer than fresh. Anymore, the fisherman will freeze it within minutes of catching it, in turn killing most contaminants. Go for it man, you're missing out!!!

PS - where would they get fresh fish in Colorado? The sushi here is phenominal. While good fish is very important, a good sushi chef is equally as important!
