Diet, Nutrition and SupplementationPost here for supplement reviews or nutritional advice. If you're trying to get "ripped abz" THIS is where you should be.
So the question is: If the macros make it a decent PWO, why couldn't you use it on a regular basis?
If I remeber it's pretty close to a 2:1 (that article says 4:1, so I could be n crack, maybe regular milk is 2:1) ratio carbs to protein, and in 500ml it has 16g? of protein. Maybe not as much as a scoop of protein, but not THAT much less. My scoops are I think 24g of protein.
"I did learn something from Craig today. He told me that he has been using chocolate milk for years as his PWO and that he sees no reason not to use it over malto. Awesome!"
Craig = CB
And:
"He says a little about people being lactose intolerant, and also says something about people are the only ones who drink milk after being an infant. But he does say that chocolate milk is the perfect PWO, cause of the protien/carb mixture. So if you can't get a pwo after a hard workout, grab choco milk. Go to his site johnberardi.com and then articles. I am sure you can find the milk answer in lean eating."
it works, I've done it. tha only argument for everyday use is that lactose and sucrose, what most of the sugars will be are not as fast acting and simple as dextrose... but I suppose that's gettign picky!! another thought is that choc. milk is probably most expensice ounce per ounce than wehy/gatorade mix.. although I've never done the math.

I think that unless you an elite athlete worrying about which sugar will get protein faster into your muscles is a waste of time. For the average joe it's just not that important.
If you do the gatorade/whey PWO and happen to run out it's good to know choclate milk is a good substitute.
I have been doing this for about 2 months now and haven't noticed much of a difference between this and my protein/malto mix.
The main reason I switched was just for a break. I got really sick of the sweet taste PWO and wanted some variety. I had read Craig's comments and decided to try it out.
larabee> you're working at % of perfection level. milk might give 90%, whey\malto 92%, pure amino acids\dextrose 94%. levels may vary day to day on what the perfect level of what is.
their are advantages and dis-advantages to each. mabey they're enough to make a difference in your purchasing. or not. there's likely a lot of variables in play to say how much of a difference one\two shakes will make.
My name is Craig, and my initials are CB, and I had chocolate milk PWO today! It was yummy. I went for the Nesquik double chocolate reduced fat milk: 10g fat, 60g Carbs, 16g Protein.

thanks for the input. I am going to give this a shot for a week or two as a change up. Go for 16 oz which comes to:
340 cals
56 g carbs
18g protein.
I think this will help me hit my calorie intake easier and cleaner.
Personally: Between Whey and Malto/Dextrose vs Chocolate Milk I find no difference in performance or recovery.
-Dextrose/Whey is probably cheaper.
-Chocolate Milk tastes better
-Chocolate Milk is more widely available(if you forget stuff).
-Dextrose/Whey is probbaly easier to transport.
-Chocolate Milk has some extra stuff like Vitamin D people in the norther parts of the continent are lacking.
I *MIGHT* have noticed a little bit better recovery when I used XTEND(contains BCAA's, glutamine, CM). It wasn't big enough or quantifiable enough to rule out placebo though so I just cant justify the extra $$$.
JB is a fan of recovery drinks, but if you dont have one he recommends low fat chocolate milk. He talks about it in his T-Nation radio interview.
Personally buying chocolate milk here is more expensive than mixing whey/gatorade so its really just a matter of if I'm in a pinch I might. Not sure how mixing your own chocolate milk rates (you guys have Quik there? sure you have something similar).
I'm doing TT for Mass and CB talks about chocolate milk as a post workout milk, since you are not only benefiting form the carbs on it, but also the proteins.
Larrabee, in fact if you choose to drink gatorate for PWO, he suggests you to drink 2 servings of gatorate and a protein shake with it. The other suggestions are protein shake + 2 bananas or 2 glasses of chocolate milk for PWO.

Just a comment here. I gotta agree with Danny, and I like sweet stuff, recovery drinks mixed 2 scoops gatorade or some other sugar and 1 scoop whey are INCREDIBLY sweet. Based on that I'd opt for Chocolate milk.
You can probably convince the rest of the population to drink choco milk easier than going to one of those crazy health food stores and buying one of those $50 tubs off the shelves. I don't know about you guys but when I mix whey at work the people around me ask what it is, i say protein and they go EWWWW, like I am mixing steak powder with water or something....
If you use enough Gatorade, it will be pretty sweet, unless you dilute it in enough water. My workout drinks total about 1.5 liters, so they're pretty diluted.
Also, if you're using your own malto/detrose mix, keep in mind that malto isn't sweet. I use 50/50 and that keeps the sweetness down TOO much almost.
Yeah, I've heard this plenty of times. Skim milk is 8-9g of protein/8fl oz. The chocolate addition ups the carbs making it a potent PWO solution. However, I get 24g of protein in my whey, added to ff yogurt and milk, I'm getting about 39g of protein to choco milk's 16g in the same volume. I haven't figured out the cost/gram, but I think it's near even.
I think choco milk is a good solution to those who don't have access to whey, dex and malt and find a gatorade/whey mix horrid.
As a side note, 16oz skim milk, mixed with a scoop of whey is 40g of protein.
