Diet, Nutrition and SupplementationPost here for supplement reviews or nutritional advice. If you're trying to get "ripped abz" THIS is where you should be.
So far I know that processed foods are bad because they are loaded with crap. I'm just having trouble identifying what is processed. For example, tv dinners....are there good ones out there, or should they just be avoided all together? If I eat those I usually go with Lean Cuisines.
If it comes in a box, it's probably processed. Sure there are some that are better than others, but you can't beat cooking your own meat. EVen if the nutrition facts are ok, it will be loaded with additives and preservatives that you don't normally get when preparing your own food. Much less the quality of ingredients (whole grain vs white flour, etc). If you do buy boxed, get in the habit of reading the ingredient list along with the nutrition facts.
Agreed. If it's boxed, it's likely bad. However, when I eat, I eat a lot of prepared stuff. But, I read the ingredient lists a lot.
There can be boxed, frozen, canned, or bottled foods that are just as "pure" as what you cook at home. Like Cappy said, you just gotta do the reading.
Beware if the item indicates that it's healthy in some way. It's a trick! I'm sure there's "something" healthy about it. But, low fat doesn't make it healthy. There are healthy fats out there. Low carb doesn't make it healthy, as it could be loaded with all sorts of bad fats. 100% natural? Yeah, so's sugar! HFCS even shows up in 100% natural foods!
Why can HFCS be in 100% natural foods, but Splenda can't? They both seem equally "natural" to me. Wait, this is your thread. Back to you!

You got that right. I used to buy low fat yogurt thinking that I was buying healthy, when in fact that crap was loaded with sugar, even more than the regular stuff.
If you can't pronounce it, ditch it. If the meal says Chicken with Broccoli, then the ingredients list should say, Chicken and Broccoli. As soon as they start adding crap in there, then you get human interference. It starts to get logical once you really start reading labels and you'll see how much sh!t they add in there...Best of luck!
If it comes from a factory, it's processed. If it comes from a barnyard, farm, garden, orchard or the wild, then it's not so processed.
Beware of too simple an answer, though. Some things that are somewhat processed are pretty decent (natural peanut butter, yogurt, cheese). And it might be an admirable goal to eliminate processed food altogether, it's a bit unrealistic in our society. I'd say aim to limit it.
