Vitamin B-12 shots
During my last doctor's visit he asked me how I feel about injections and when I told him that I don't feel too comfortable he just kept writing on his pad and told me to take oral vitamin b-12 because I have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and already take medication that interferes with vitamin B12 absorption from food. I know he wanted to recommend injectables and I heard that it was quite painful. Has anyone taken b12 shots before? Is it very painful?
Thanks.

Re: Vitamin B-12 shots
Hey man I have no idea about the B12 shots. I wanted to ask you though. I have acid reflux disease. What is the difference between that and GERD? Should I look into getting B12 shots also? Sorry I couldn't answer your question.

Re: Vitamin B-12 shots
Tossedup, I really don't know the difference between the two. To put it simple I have a lot of heartburn because the little valve that is supposed to keep the acid in the stomach is not working properly so a lot of acid gets into the esophagus. Of course a blood test is on order to know if you have b12 deficiency.
People on antacids can have poor B-12 absorption.

Prilosec is one of the Proton Pump Inhibitors mentioned in the article. I take protonix and it's great. You gotta talk to your doctor.

Re: Vitamin B-12 shots
nyguy cant they operate on that? I know two people that had operations but that was when they were pre teens so maybe thats the answer.
As with any injections the pain is short lived but I understand its the volume of the injection that causes the issue and that its subcataneous or however ya spell it!!!!

Re: Vitamin B-12 shots
Thanks for the post, BFG. Surgery is recommended for very serious cases of GERD and mine is not that serious and can be controlled with antacids.
Subcutaneous as I understand are just under the skin, like insuline shots and B-12s are supposed to be in the muscle.

My husband has reflux disease too, and very low energy levels to go with it. Bummer.

Re: Vitamin B-12 shots
My doctor gave me a b12 shot a days ago and I feel so much energy it's amazing. He also prescribed me injectables and told me to take it every 2 weeks. My wife was inquiring about it so I called him and he told me that I can give her a shot, and so I did. She also feels much better and a lot more energy but it bothered her sleep a little the first day. Now, it doens't give you insomnia but your body keeps going while mind knows it's time to sleep.
I also feel I'm getting much better food absorption and gained 2 lbs ever since. I don't know if I should give sole credit to the b12 but that's what happened.

Re: Vitamin B-12 shots
Do you think if I took vitamin B-12 orally I could get a big energy boost, too? I'm always looking for more energy to get me through school!

Zachl, as always you have to ask your doctor but I don't see why not.

Re: Vitamin B-12 shots
Interesting thread - I had GERD/acid reflux for years & took prevacid for it. There is a history of weak stomach valves in my family - my son was operated on for this when he was about a year old (the procedure is called a 'fundoplication'). I think that it is quite a good procedure for children but doesn't seem to work consistently for adults.
I started drinking quite a bit of green tea & taking fish oils about a year ago. At the same time I increased my protein intake and reduced starcy carbs. Afer I'd been doing this for about 4-5 mos I ran out of prevacid & wasn't able to get in to see the doctor for several days - and found to my surprise that I had ZERO acid problems... Got the okay to stay off and really don't have any acid problems at all now unless I drink tons of wine or eat a really carby/floury meal..
Of course it's hard to say if any of the above were the reason for the acid reduction, but diet is worth taking a look at, as well as inflammation etc..
