Liberal Democrats Launch Policies For Cycling
7 April 2005
The Liberal Democrats today launch their proposals to revitalise cycling in Britain, with a range of proposals aimed at increasing the number of journeys made by bicycle.
Research by the Liberal Democrats can reveal that cycling has suffered a dramatic decline since Labour came to power. Under the present government the number of trips made by bicycle has fallen by a staggering 22%. As well as making fewer trips cyclists also travel shorter distances on Britain’s ever more congested roads.
The Liberal Democrat’s five point plan for cycling:
1. Create an environment which accommodates and supports cycling;
2. Improve integration of public transport with provision for cyclists;
3. Encourage young people to cycle regularly;
4. Emphasise the health benefits of cycling for both adults and children
5. Improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians.
John Thurso MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Transport Secretary, said:
“The Government have failed to tackle congestion in our towns and cities and it is no wonder that people have been giving up cycling. Labour have broken promise after promise they made to cyclists, and done little to improve conditions for those who actually do choose to cycle.
“Cycling is a healthy, environmentally friendly, inexpensive mode of transport. More needs to be done to provide better facilities and support for existing cyclists, and provide the conditions to encourage many others to get back on their bikes. The Liberal Democrat five point plan for cycling will be an effective means through which to get the process back on the road.”
