I commuted to work on my bike. It's only ten miles, but it was a fantastic experience. At one point, this guy comes up behind me and honks. I was thinking: Oh jeez! Here we go! He's just hanging behind me, then he pulls up along side me. He's an older guy in a pickup and he points at me. I'm thinking "Oh carp! What now?" Then he gives me a huge smile and a big thumbs up!

There are parts of the ride that are very quiet. I went down along the river, which was beautfiul. A few more potholes than I remember, though. All-in-all: It was a GREAT time.

Some notes: First, get sani-wipes for when I get to the office. Second, get a bookbag to carry my clothes in--the over the shoulder thing is unwieldy. Third, pack lunch for the week on the day I drive in, so I don't have to carry it.

Sorry you didn't get any action. What's not cool is that avatar, sick!

I wish I could bike commute. I have several issues keeping me from doing it.

1. The only way to get from home to work is not very bike friendly.

2. No shower facility at work and living in Arkansas that could get pretty bad in the summer.

3. I usually take my step daughter to school in the morning.

Well, maybe someday.

1. The only way to get from home to work is not very bike friendly.....surely there must be more than one way. I picture you jumping through people's back yards.

2. No shower facility at work and living in Arkansas that could get pretty bad in the summer. I showered before I left in the am. I have clean wipes at work for after I get there.

3. I usually take my step daughter to school in the morning....you could ride with your bike to her school, drop her off, then bike from there. Return to the school after work, then drive your bike home again.

C'mon....it'll be fun!

I wish I lived close enough to ride.

It's 50+ km each way (about a 2 hour ride at my pace), so that's just a bit too much commuting time for me.

I'm trying to pick a mid-point where I can park the car and hop on my bike.

The YMCA is just up the hill from my office, so I can stop in there to shower, and coast the rest of the way to work.

That last idea is actually pretty good. With some of the areas of town I would have to ride through it would be a good workout.

Must pedal fast past the crack whore...

I, too, would love to be able to commute to work on my bike. I could probably do it since I go in so early, but that'd mean getting up around 2:30a instead of 3a, plus it's mostly uphill for the 11 miles to work. However, I still want to get a bike. Haven't had one since my last one was stolen a few years ago. Maybe if I make it to NYC, I'll sell off a lot of crap, including my car, and get one.

Hey Fish.. just got to this post. That's VERY cool. I envy you for trying that and hope you keep with it. I work mostly out of my home office (for the past 7 years), so it's not an option (I guess I could ride the bike down the stairs ). Before that, I lived 1/4 mile from my office for the previous 5 years and walked except when it was bad weather. Before THAT, I had to take an interstate highway to get to my job which was a 40 minute drive away. So I've never really had the opportunity to bike commute. Enjoy yours.

Glad to see others finding it's really a blast to commute to work (if you can)! Most drivers around the city (LR/NLR/Sherwood) are really good give you room. I leave the house earlier so I'm usually biking into town around 7 rather than the heavy traffic at 8. I've left several times after work at 4:30pm to 5 and went right through the middle of downtown with no problems.

As far as showering, in the winter and early spring you can get away with a wash yourself off in the bathroom but yep, commuting in the summers demand showers before you show you for that meeting. Luckily, my company has a fitness center and showers.
