There is always something memorable from a trip out on the trail, I mean why else would we continue to do it right? Anyway one of the guys at work and I were talking about funny stuff that happens out on the trail. I started out with one where my buddy couldn't make it up over a stump and stalled, then couldn't clip-out, fell over, slid about five feet down an embankment right into the biggest poison oak bush you've ever seen.
Then I thought of one that wasn't quite as funny but always sticks out in my head when telling trail tales. Anyway, the trail that we were on is frequented by weekenders down towards the bottom but most never make it anywhere near the back country. We were shooting back down from the top to the trail head, way too fast considering the blind turns and the nearing of the weekenders below. At some point we topped over 40kph but I have no idea how fast I was going when it happened. I'm leading the pack (okay there were only three of us) and turn a semi-blind corner on a fireroad that is about 6 feet wide. Right in the middle of the trail is a snake that is stretched completely across it with about 6 inches on either side. I lean to the right, picking a direction as fast as I could but see two girls standing with their bikes about 10 feet from the snake right in that direction, avoiding having anything to do with it. I realize that there is no way to get to the other side of the trail because of my speed and I bunny hop the critter. In mid flight I look about 30yds down the trail and see a father and his two sons sitting at the next turn in the trail. I start breaking in the air, front and back, as hard as I can. After landing, I realize even with the hydrolics there is no way I am not taking out the family, so figuring it's my stupidity for going too fast I decide to take one for the team and do a somewhat controlled crash, kick out the back tire and lean in, ready to kiss the skin on my right leg goodbye. About five or ten feet before I hit them, my tires catch, flip me up and shoots me out, changing my direction 90 degrees and driving me perfectly down the curve in the path. As I'm passing the guy he shoots me a well deserved stink-eye and I let out a little "heh, heh....snake." Next thing I hear behind me is an excited "Hey Josh, check it out a snake!"
I don't know why that sticks out because it's pretty lame as far as impressive stories go, but just thought I'd share. Anyone else care to help me waste work time with their stories?
