Anybody on here ever try out a 29 inch mtb? If so what did you think?

I have no earthly idea what my frame size is on my scaplel. Its a medium frame. Does that tell you anything?

I know that you are probably not going to ride the same size frame me though. Aren't you about 6'?

Sorry, I'm talking wheel size. Your bike is the same as my current one, 26". I have heard that the new 29" bikes are smoother over long haul riding (like the rides we do in adventure races) and I was wondering if anyone had any experience.

Duh! I'm such a dork.

That sounds too big, but what do I know?

If I ride with you soon do you promise not to humiliate me?

Nope, but sounds like a reason to buy a new bike!

ODB,

I have never ridden a 29'r but I have done a little research on them and would consider owning one.

Things I know about them:
  • They make obsticles smaller/easier
They make for a smoother ride
A little more comfortable on long rides
Their handling is slower than 26" bikes, generally
Your adding rotational weight, which is the worst kind of weight to add.
Your limited on Fork and wheel options.

SoulCraft

Here is one from SoulCraft called the "Holy Roller". I am particularly fond of the steel frame. Talk about smooth as silk ride.

That SoulCraft looks sweet. The frame looks thinner than I'm used to. Is it an illusion due to tire size or do they trim weight there? I think I'd like one but wouldn't want to give up my 26 for jumping around the trail.

Those thin tubes are due to using steel. All steel bikes have thinner looking tubes than Alumminum frames, or Ti for that matter.

Oh, and the wheel size makes the tubes look even smaller.

And no one said anything about you giving up anything. I would definately keep your other steed. Remember, the 29'r has some things that are hard to come by. You got a wheel issue?? It will be unrideable for a while. So the 26 inch bike would be back at it.

Steel is real!

Please explain your comment. For, without explanation, it serves to confuse.
