Some background info on me: Used to be an avid road biker (50-100 miles/week) turned 16 got license dust collected on bike.
Went off to college bought a mountain bike to cross the campus quickly and conviently. Moved to Hawai'i and brought the mountain bike along to serve the same purpose and to "play" around.
I currently own a trek 6500, decent enough bike but I live in Northern Iowa where there aren't even any decent hills!

I would like to transform my trek into a road bike of sorts. I have some ideas but thought maybe some of you guys out there may have some experience with this.
I would buy a new one but I am more of a runner than a biker, currently anyway. If I can make my MB more effecient on the roads then I may switch passions.

The only thing I can tell you is to get some slick tires and if you can lock out your suspension do it. That would be about all you can do to turn it into a "commuter" bike. As far as really being a road bike the geometry is all wrong. If you spent the money to change our the rear cluster, add drop bars and change out your shifters and brake levers you still would have a very heavy bike plus the amount it would cost could by you a nice entry level road bike.

Or if you want to do some decent mountain biking (what I would do) here are some sites that might help:
