Default Which one would you buy?

I'm leaning towards the Jamis (assuming once I ride it, it fits well) but can't figure out why the bike shop owner, who sells both, is pushing me towards Trek and told me that if he can't get the right thing in Trek, THEN he'll look at Jamis. He even told me you get more for your $$ in Jamis, "But we're a Trek shop, and we try to sell them first." WTF?

Either it's reverse psychology or he's a cyclist, not a salesman.

Both look like beautiful bikes. I lean toward the blue and white one.

at some point you have to compare components rather than frames and frame makers I think - and I have no idea how those compare on these two (too long out of the road bike world).

Ride them both. See which one you like better. Don't let someone talk you into something that you don't want just because they're a "Trek Shop."

Go with the Jamis. 10 speed vs 9 speed= no question.

This was the OWNER of the shop! He's setting up a 56 cm Trek for me to test (he didn't have one on the floor today.) When he calls me to tell me it's ready I'll tell him I want to ride the Jamis too. On paper it looks like a no brainer... better components for less money! But of course it's all in the ride.

Default Jamis

I have the Jamis and have no regrets. Like you said, better components and a lower price. I did not even pay $1000 for mine so be sure to talk about the price too!

The owner still needs to sell, right? If he gets "rebates" for the Trek that he doesn't get for the Jamis, it's in his best interest to sell Treks (provided that the Trek is a good bike for the customer).

If that's the case, then letting the cat out of the bag is not the best strategy. If he admits the other bike is a better deal, then he didn't make his pitch correctly.

Go with the Jamis. It's all 105 components, no Tiagra like on the Trek.

I actually went with none of the above. At 5'10" I didn't think I'd need a WSD, but I surely did feel the difference. 56cm WSDs are hard to come by, but this baby was very comfy and in my price range. And now she's in my garage after an inaugural ride this morning:

Dolce Elite. White with little pink accents would most certainly not have been my color of choice, but tall chicks on small budgets can't be too choosy.

That's a really sweet setup, bet it rides like a dream.

I have a Tiagra triple front on my Specialized that's now 7 years old and still working fine, and the 105 is bullet proof. I also have a Pave seatpost with the Zertz inserts, now I want them in my fork and seat stays too. One of these days I need to buy a Roubaix, but until then I'll just envy your Dolce.

Now that the post above it has been deleted this looks really whacked and random!

Mark, I rode a few bikes that had more 105 and even Ultegra and I must say that the Dolce shifted just as clean and neat. I had one bike shop owner tell me the major difference between Tiagra and 105 was cosmetic. If I'd have had a choice I would have purchased a compact instead of the triple, but whatever. Like I said, on a $1200 budget one can't get too picky. I'm gonna head out for a few miles this morning and enjoy.

Nice bike. Congrats.

I never really could get used to a road bike. I had a decent entry level road bike years ago, but sold it because my mountain bike was the only thing I rode, even for road rides.

Lisa drools a little. I saw this bike in a LBS a few weeks back. She sure is purty. Hope she's a good ride. And so I beat the guys to the punch line..."that's what he said"
