Default It's been a while...

hope everyone is doing well. Getting in some miles despite weather and less daylight.

I have been in riding limbo, due to family, weather and transitioning to a new road bike. Fortunately for me, I have recently found Crossfit (any comments?) and I have been working out more consistently and I believe I am feeling/seeing results.

Anyway. As I mentioned I hope everyone had a great holiday and a good start to the new year.

Pics of my new road bike to come soon.

Ryan

Crossfit has some pretty cool workouts. I do have some concerns that there is not enough emphasis on proper technique for some of the advanced lifts.

You still mountain biking at all or is it all road?

Good to see you Flee! Hope all is well with the little one, and that you are enjoying your winter!

Man....you do keep your finger on the pulse of this place. That is a major reason why JP Fitness always has me coming back.

JP....I know exactly what you are talking about on the technique front. Upon initial viewing it seems chaotic at best. Of course, they claim that form is a very serious focus. Thats not always easy to see when you start typing in "crossfit" on YouTube.

Anyway, it is working very well for me for many reasons. One (i'm not naive) is, it's new. Something different. Second, It resolves a problem I have always had and that is WO length. I can't do anything productive after 45 minutes. Third, it raises my intensity level, because I always have the clock, previous times, or a WO partner to consider. Fourth, it revolves around functional movements. Ultimately, it is easier to pick up my 20lb five month old son! And my 48lb five year old daughter.

I would love your take on any aspect of the WO's, as I value your opinion.

As for riding! I will always be a mountain biker first. Just too much appreciation for the isolation of the outdoors. I completely focus on the ride, when i'm in the trees. All the other stuff melts away. I have grown fonder of the road, but unless i'm with a group...and even sometimes then, I have plenty of time to think about all the other stuff I should, could be doing.

I did score a beautiful road bike. It's used...but I operate that way. I think it will have a home for a long time.

Peace.

Ryan

Little one is doing well....although he isn't that little. Winter is going fine, although I have been off the bike more than I like. Of course, it is hard for me to complain with all the folks who are up north of Dallas.

Here is a video of Owen laughling. His sister was the reason for the hysteria, but she wasn't included in the video because she was only clad in underwear.

YouTube - kid laughlin

Pics of the Coppi coming soon.

Ryan,
I actually like crossfit. It wouldn't work for me due to injuries and other factors, but I can see a lot of benefit to it. Just monitor your progress carefully, and especially watch for shoulder injuries. If you don't have a history for them (like I do) you should be fine. It's really hard to say without actually seeing you perform your lifts, and just looking at your posture in general.

That vid was HILARIOUS! If I ever need to smile after a rough day I'll have to go back and watch that. It's awesome when you see them bonding to their siblings like that... Means that they'll be friends as they grow up together. My oldest two are connected at the hip.

Hey Ryan! Good to hear from you! My bike is still hanging in the garage for a few more months. I do not like cold weather riding. I spend my winter hitting the weights more. That crossfit stuff looks very intense. I can see why JP has concerns about form.

Can't wait to see the pics of the new (to you) bike!

Maybe some day I will video myself doing some movements. Youtube emm and let you critique. I have been doing many of the multi joint movements for some time, along with reading lots of literature on proper form. So I think I am pretty close if not right on. One that I don't have a lot of experience with are the cleans. They are fantastic, but I bet my technique is lacking a bit. Funny you mention shoulder issues. I have a bad left shoulder, and have had one for a long time. I haven't yet diagnosed exactly what the problem is. I can't do a lot of the over head movements, mainly the over head squat.......I just can't get my shoulders in the proper position (ROM issues) and the left is just painful. So I scale or substitue movements that cause me excessive pain or discomfort. All the while working on rehab and flexibility in the shoulders. I will continue to be conservative.

Glad you liked the video. It cracks me up every time I watch it. His sister is excellent and I expect he will be a fan of hers for many wonderful years.

Thanks again, Jean Paul, for taking the time that you do to touch base with the community.

Good to hear from you too Pman. Sorry you have to put your bike away for so long. At least you have a good outlet.

If you have never explored the Crossfit stuff.....I encourage you to do so. It is really cool stuff. One key to remember, as you watch the videos, is that everything is scaleable. You are watching some very elite people doing those exercises (although, there are lots of CF videos out there with normal people as well) and they blow through the WO's at an alarming pace. I'm easily a year away from doing ANY crossfit WO as rx'd (proper weights and reps) in a respectable time. But, it's all scalable, as I mentioned.

Example. If you search you tube for "crossfit gates of fire" you will get a pretty good video, with normal humans doing a very specific workout for time.

IE:
Do the following for time.
50 GHDSU (these are Glute Ham developer sit ups)
50 push ups
100 thrusters @ 65lbs
50 push ups
50 GHDSU

The first time I did this workout....I had to scale all three. In other words, I immediately scaled the thrusters to 45lbs. I knew I wouldn't be able to do 100 @ 65lbs. What I didn't know is that the last 20 push ups I would have to do "girl push ups" and I could barely complete those reps. And I had to go to a normal bent knee situp for my last 15 GHDSU. I finished the workout in 32 minutes.

Well last night, I did this workout again. My first time to duplicate a CF workout and compete against my own time. Well, I again scaled the thrusters to 45lbs, but I didn't have to scale my GHDSU's or my push ups. I finished in 31 minutes.

Success!

Welcome back, Flee. Must be almost challenge time again.

Great video. Takes me back to when our son used to get our daughter going like that.
