Hello! I have somehow totally missed your log, but I have read it start to current, so I am all caught up. 1) the bamboo story totally made me smile and 2) the health food store story (especially the man in the suit) has given me the giggles. I worked at a Cracker Barrel back in the day and we called it "the crack". Not sure why that is relevant, but thought I would share.
You are doing great! I hear you on the wedding photos. My only sibling got married the end of May and if the threat of pictures doesn't light the fire, I don't know what will.
I enjoy your log. Keep up the good work.

I'm wondering how the phone interview went. I've done many of them (both as the applicant and as the interviewer) and they're a good screening tool. Hope you did great!

Thanks for checking out my little blog here. Glad you liked the little stories.

I just got home from 'the crack' (I love that), a few minutes ago. My last table was a group of seven people and they each had at LEAST six refills on drinks. I am not kidding. One kid drank about 8 DrPeppers. I wanted to tell him, you do know this is about 1000 worthless calories in just soda, right? It made me a little sick just watching them. Funny how when the parents do it, the kids do it too. So much of our behavior patterns are learned.

I assume the phone interviews went well, I have 'real' interviews scheduled from them. Although it is three interviews, it really only represents two companies.

One of the companies used two phone interviews. First call was from the company recruiter that found my resume on Monster, and then the second interview was done by a district supervisor, who normally does it in person, but is in Naples FL right now, opening another restaurant. My third (and hopefully final) interview will be done here in town by the local GM.

I just want it all to be over, and to have a job that I like . . and get all my benefits back LOL

Good luck with those interviews! It sounds like you have a great head on for someone who's only, what, 25 did you say you are?

What's your field?

I am 32 , the 25 was sorta wishful thinking. hee hee.

Actually, my field is restaurant management. Up until recently I was a manager at a fine dining restaurant, but the economy is killing places like that. I am hoping to get more into 'upscale casual' dining, which is the type of places that I have the interviews with coming up next week.

I enjoy the activity of the job, and usually the benefits are good. I miss it, and being a server is a far cry from it. LOL. When I manage I can tell people what to do . . when I serve then can tell ME what to do!

Oh well; I was mistaken. But hey; 32 seems young to me! (Can't believe I am saying that, though ) I totally changed careers when I was 34.

Yet another workout:

Workout 5A of Stage 1

Squats (goblet)
3x10x20

Pushups
3x10 sets with increasing decline (?)

Seated row
1x10x40
2x10x50

Step ups
3x10x10

Prone Jackknike
3x12

Notes:

~There was me and three guys in the gym and I was the only one lifting weights. They were all doing cardio LOL.

~I am not sure that I am logging things correctly on my workout notes. For example, on the goblet squats, I had a 10lb dumbbell in each hand. Does that mean I did 3 sets of 10 squats times 20 lbs? On the step ups I held a 5lbs weight in each hand, so is that 10lbs per set? *I haz a confused*

~Form is coming along nicely. Even with today being the first day of 3 sets (as opposed to 2), I really tried to focus on keeping everything the way it should be.

Other notes not directly related to this workout:

~ I made myself eat more the other day, and MAN what a difference it made in my energy levels! I ate around 1800 cals yesterday and I could feel the effects almost instantly. I like the idea that I can look at food as a 'fuel source' and see the connection better now, since I am watching things so carefully.

~Today, I drank an ensure before the workout and a BIG post wo shake that had 420 calories and 59 grams of protein. I just shook it up in my martini shaker and drank it down. It's a Big Boy drink.

LOL @ the Big Boy drink..
Good to see your energy levels are up!

As for notation, my preferred one is
(2x10) x 10 - 10 -10 for (weight of dumbbbell ) x reps in set 1 - reps in set 2 - etc.
I'll use a second line when upping the weight

For barbells or when I use only 1 dumbbell it's without parenthesis and just total weight, like
10x 8 - 8 - 7
Some others write 10t (total wt) or 10e (in each hand)

Whatever you do, make it consistent so that people understand what you mean.

I have been notating my dumbbell weights as just one DB, assuming it was apparent I hold one in each hand, so 3 sets of squats with 10 reps a set with a 10 lb. DB in each hand is: 3 x 10 x 10lb. meaning a total weight of 20 lbs. But maybe that's confusing for people and noting 10/e, or 10's (as Jane said) for 10 in each hand might be better.

Most of us picture goblet squats done with both hands holding a single db "goblet style". So if I see goblet squats 20#, I assume a single 20# db was used, not one in each hand either of 20e or 10e.

If I see DB rows, I assume the weight listed is a "per hand" weight since it is a single limb exercise. Same with any pressing variations.

Something like step ups or lunges, I'm not sure what you are doing or holding so in my log I'd be explicit, like 10e to make sure it was clear I was holding 10# db for a total of 20#. If I wrote 20# I'd be concerned that someone would misunderstand and think I had been holding 20# per hand.

Good catch, Lisa.

Goblet squats are essentially done with just one dumbbell , that you hold up to your chest.. if I recall well that's how you did it at first with a plate clasped against your chest.
Doing them with 2 hands you'd sooner hang your arms down with the dumbbells.. or did you cross your arms cossack-style?

Yeah, I think this is what I will do. It's simple and makes sense to me from a newbie perspective.

Yeah, that is what I was doing before. It was simpler. This seemed harder, but it wasn't what I was used to. I am just not comfortable with the terms and such yet.

I think I'm going to cut some of that bamboo and try to do the overhead squat. I am going to reread that part of the book tonight and see which he recommends.

I was going to do it last night, but the family got a surprise visit from my brother's future in-laws yesterday, so it threw off my game. I am glad I had already been to the gym.

p.s. Tennessee is sooo hot this weekend! We have had an outstandingly beautiful Spring/Summer so far, so I suppose we are due a heat wave or two. I think perhaps I'll go to the mountains this week some time.

I live 20 minutes from here: http://www.nps.gov/grsm/

I started that for mine, partly because I was duplicating my workouts on another site (where I thought people might not know which kind of exercise is which). Now it just makes sense to me.

I LOVE Tennessee. Never spent a lot of time there, but have driven through and camped several times. It is so beautiful. Lucky you to live right near the forest.

Warning total RANT!

So, after three weeks I am back up to 160lbs , which is my original starting weight.

I had high hopes because last week I weighed in at 158.5 and was swollen and felt all bloaty and icky. Today I feel like that water weight has gone down, but the scale has gone back UP! UGH!

Now I have to review what I have been doing. Am I consuming too many calories? Should I go to 2x a week lifting, instead of 3x a week?

This week I had a couple of days where it was hard to keep my calories up, and I got really drained energy-wise. I can take the hunger, but I don't know if I can take the lethargy. Right now I am averaging 1600-1700 cals (non-workout days) and about 1800 (workout days). Between working out, working as a server, and just 'living', I feel like that should provide a sufficient deficit.

I will post my ponderings in the fat loss troubleshoot section too. Any advice is appreciated

Start weighing your food.....you have no idea what your intake really is until you start this.

Follow what Jane said. The food tracking is so crucial in fat loss, because we don't really know how much we're consuming until we become precise in weighing what we eat. Getting a simple scale to weigh out everything will be super helpful.

Just curious, though. Was your food intake from the last few days carb & salt-heavy? I've found that when I increase that, my weight goes up by a few lbs. - mostly 2 lbs., but sometimes as much as 5 lbs. within a day. Even having a few servings of potato chips will affect my weight within a few hours, but the following day or 2 days afterward, I'm back to normal.

x3 on weighing food. Considering that you work as a server, it's possible that you're not eating enough and your deficit is too large for that kind of active job and NROL4W on top of that. If you weigh food, it's easier to pinpoint what the problem is.

Earth Fare is the new breed (at least to the South) of supermarket that caters to the 'yuppie' crowd. A place where all the 'cool and trendy' 20 and 30 somethings go and do all their shopping in exercise clothes. Everything is organic, lots of barrels of bulk food, etc.

Now, I will be the first to admit that I am not really 'cool' enough to be shopping at a place like this, but they do actually let my kind in, as long as we purchase something on every visit and don't eat too many of the free samples.

I always enjoy going there, but today I actually took some time to notice my surroundings and make a few notes. Here are some of the things I took notice of:

It's not the hard to get a good parking space there. A lot of them park towards the middle/end of the parking lot (presumably for the extra exercise) so there was several of the good spots available. I circled for a moment, but chose a spot somewhere near the middle (after all, I didn't want to look like a loser)

They really do shop in exercise clothes. It was sort of amazing, probably 60% of customers were in a variety of spandex and athletic wear. Now technically I could have went in exercise clothes myself because I had just gotten done at the gym BUT when you are past a certain weight (slightly porkly) people do not assume you have just come from the gym when you are wearing exercise clothes, they think you are wearing them because they are more comfy. Not nearly as cool.

My course of shopping took me to the deli. I bought a 1/4 lb of scottish smoked salmon. It looked so good and I had never bought Scottish salmon before. Since I am Scot-Irish myself, I figured I would probably be genetically geared to like it even more than 'regular' smoked salmon. I was right, the salmon was awesome. Genetic science is a wonderful thing.

Turns out that 'free range' is about as popular a term as organic is. The meat section was loaded with pictures of happy, frollicking chickens that were presumably just that happy right up until the moment of decappitation. My salmon didn't have any such accompanying information, and so I actually do not know it's mental state at time of death.

There are a lot more types of hummus out there than I ever knew existed. In fact, it had it's own refridgerated case. The girls beside me in white nike exercise wear chose roasted red pepper, but I stuck with 'classic'. Like I said, I'm not trendy, just visiting.

So as I headed to the checkout with my two prized purchases (having serenspiously taken a just a small bite sample of the salmon already) the sleek business man in front of me slips on a jellied pitted prune that someone had dropped on the floor off the 'completely organic' salad bar. He skids momentarily, but catches his balance and averts what would no doubt be a catastrophe.

Three employees rush to his aid (one from sushi, the nice hippie that gave me my salmon at the deli, and one from the whole grain bakery). The business man just put his hand out comfortingly and told them all it was okay. "It's a good thing that I keep in shape. It's all about balance" he told them, and flashed a perfect smile at me. I smiled back. My two front teeth are a little big, so I didn't smile back as big as he had.

Once at the counter, the 105 lb really perky cashier took care of me. "Did you bring your own bag?" she asked. "Um, no I didn't" I respond. I glance behind me in line and all three people behind me have their little linen bags tucked up under their arm. I smile boldly at her (I will not cower) and read the sign above her head that tells me that not using paper bags helps you get more gas mileage out of your car (because of the weight of paper?)

She smiles balefully and rings up my purchases. Scottish salmon apparently do run a little more pricey than 'plain ol' salmon, but no doubt worth it. I pay with a smile on my face and pick up my two precious items. She never did offer me a bag, but I figure it will look trendier to walk out without one anyway.

When I go outside, it is raining buckets. As I walk to my car past all the open parking spaces getting drenched I figure it was a pretty good trip to Earth Fare.

Who knows, if I stick with weight lifting, one day I may suit up in spandex and buy the roasted red pepper hummus myself ?

**I'll post about my day later, I just to stick this in here for some fun**

HA! HAAAA! Love this. We got ourselves a few of those out in la la land its called WHOLE FOODS. So true. Oh, I wear my sweat pants everywhere, I'm probably not looking slamming in them but who am I dressing for? Don't get me wrong, I have SAD issues and all but sweat pants or jeans, fat is still fat. I'd rather be comfy. I'd wear my sweats if I was 100 lbs too.

No one talks to anyone in grocery stores out here anyway and we'll pretty good about avoiding all sorts of eye contact. Gotta love the city. Except the cashiers, I'll exchange pleasantries or what not with the cashiers when they're ringing you up. The entire experience can cause me to forget to breathe until I get to my car.

Yes ma'am

LOL, Actually my future sis-in-law asked me what I wanted for my bridesmaid gift and I asked her for a digital food scale.

I would have bought one by now, but I am super broke at present. Hopefully in the next few days I will have it.

Ditto on the goblet squats. I hold one DB or KB in both hands.
And, I note the weights in each hand. For example:
IYT@ 10/e x 10, 10, 10

So, as per the whining in my above post, I am sure you can see that today was a bit of a frustration for me. In all honesty, the weight thing is not the only rough part of my day, the not having a 'real' job right now is stressful (and hit hard today when I got a $1200 credit card payment in the mail this morning ), as well as some personal stuff that y'all are money ahead for NOT knowing about. LOL

I didn't workout (doing that tomorrow) but I thought I would log my food log just so you can all tell me how nuts I am, and possibly shout mean things at me, or snicker behind your finger tips.

B: hot tea (50)
S: hot tea (50)
L: 16 oz of milk and TWO benefit bars (540)
S (at work): ONE crouton, and 5 fried okras (100?)
S: hot tea (50)
D: 3/4 of a chicken breast, half of a baked potato (with zero calorie butter spray on it) and cup of white rice. (the pot of rice was cooked with a small amount of butter, so I added 100 cals for that) (720)

This comes up to 1510 and normally I would say 1600 just to add the random 100 cals or so that is typical, but from now on I am going to make every effort to be as accurate as possible.

The only things that I did not list are water, three unsweetened teas that I drank, and about six lemon wedges that I ate. (I know it is crazy, but when I'm upset I crave salted lemon wedges . . I can't tell you how many bad relationships have left my teeth on edge . . literally )

So that is it for today, this one is going in the books at 1510 calories.

She's NUTS! She's NUTS! She's NUTS! (snicker, snicker)

But, to be serious, I gotta say that that diet does seem to be lacking in nutritional value. I'm surprised that you are able to workout on that food. I would be dying, starving, and very, very cranky.

Just as an example, here's my food for today:

B: 1 c. oatmeal with 1/4 c. whole milk and 1 scoop protein
S: 1 c. nonfat yogurt with 1 scoop protein
L: huge salad with spinach, greens, beets, chickpeas, carrots, mushrooms, tomato, black olives, 1 can tuna, 3 (or 4, not sure) Tbsp. sesame ginger dressing, Coke Zero
S: cherries and two cheese sticks (and one piece of chocolate caramel candy boss brought back from Hawaii)
D: thick grilled pork chop, broccoli

This came out to about 2000 cals, so obviously more than you want to eat, but the types of food is what I'm pointing out. I see a serious lack of veggies, fruits, whole grains, and real proteins there.

No snickering or shouting, but just throwing that out there for consideration. . . . .

Yeah its hard getting fit with this program with finances I noticed pretty quick. You're not alone in that I will say. Just keep on keeping on! You're doing the best you can. I love plain lemons especially squeezed in club soda with a legal equal, like a "hard" non alcholic lemonade. But I should try the salty ones lol. I like it squeezed in water too. Lemons are like laxatives though, so just watch out!

Yeah; good ones, Lisa. Love those eggs from Costco. Also the cottage cheese tubs, cheese sticks, and they have really, really cheap grated cheese and chunk cheese.

I agree--get more whole foods into your diet! Those are some great suggestions from LisaS on relatively cheap foods. And of course keep an eye on sales, and buy in bulk and freeze when stuff is cheap.

Hang in there!

I knew you would do that! LOL. Yeah, I know I need to up the quality, it's just gotta be done. Honestly you can't live off of 2% milk and hot tea.

I do have a really great rotisserie that I've been cooking chicken in lately. It is so good! It's a bit hard to figure the calories and I'm sorta paranoid until I get that scale, but geez if you know you are eating less than a full chicken breast, it seems like you can't underestimate too much . . .

Those are great ideas. I really haven't made use of the bulk sized items like I should. It always comes down to planning and setting yourself up for success. Failing to plan is planning to fail . . . whoever said that first was a genius.

This is sooo random BUT the golf pub I work at has a brunch on Sundays, and on that brunch they have scrambled eggs. Well I LOVE the scrambled eggs and when they turn us loose to eat off there (we eat free at 2 before they take it down), I always just get a big pile of the eggs and eat them. I got worried the other day because they are so good (just soft, and moist without seeming undercooked or lumpy) I figured they must have butter or something in them that I didn't know about . . so I went and asked the head chef how they are prepared.

Well, come to find out, they come prescrambled (looking like egg beaters) in a big ziploc looking plastic bag. They simply put the whole bag down into a big pot of boiling water and leave it there for a few minutes. The eggs totally cook inside the bag! They take the bag out of the boiling water, cut the top open, and dump the eggs out into one big block. Then break them up to look scrambled before they serve them. No added butter or fat, just pure boiled/scrambled eggs.

I wish I could do this at home. They are freakin' awesome I wonder if you can aquire smaller versions of these bags and how expensive they are . . .??

Okay, I am going to go eat some calories, so that I can workout and work off some calories, so that I can come back home and eat more calories.
