I was really drawn in by your first post. I'm so glad you are getting on track with your body image issues. That's some crazy stuff about your stomach lining! Is there lasting damage from that?
I'm new here too, but it sounds like you are off to a great start! I look forward to seeing your progress.
I don't really think so. I still have stomach 'issues' (meaning I have to take Prevacid every day) but all in all, I think that would be there anyway.
The doctor told me that as long as the trauma was 'general' (the whole stomach lining) as opposed to pinpoint (say when you have reflux so bad in one area that it eats thru the lining) then it should repair itself in whole.
It was no doubt the dumbest thing I have ever done to my body, but what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. And it does give me a really good foundation for what I am doing now, and an appreciation that 'quick fixes' have their own price.
I love your charts!!!! I am so jealous of them! LOL You have done a great job so far, and I look forward to reading your log too!
That coffee/chocolate shake is really good; I do that when I have leftover coffee in the afternoon. But I have never blended it with the ice, I just put the cubes in whole and shake it to make it like an iced coffee with protein. I usually add some milk, too, but cottage cheese would work well, I bet.
I love getting frozen berries and using vanilla powder, one cup of berries, and ice cubes (with a little water to get it "going" in the Vitamix). That's one of my faves. But honestly, I love the brand PP I use just shaken with water. Chocolate or vanilla, either one is good just plain.
The good news is that I pushed through and did my third workout for the week! I am quite happy about that b/c I did an orientation for a new job this morning, came home and brother wanted me to 'talk' to him (he is getting married in a few weeks), and now I am going in to work for my other job right now. Also I had 'messed up' earlier today (I'll detail in a minute) and so past 'diet' behavior is that once you mess up, the day is shot.
So, with all that going on, I was unmotivated to do my workout, not to mention it being simply difficult to fit in. BUT I did it, and I feel better for having done so. It was great to pick up and push myself to do it.
The bad news is that I had issues with my healthy eating. I started the morning off with a 16 oz glass of milk. Then I went to Cracker Barrel (where I am starting my new serving job) to do an orientation. That takes about 4 hours and you get a free meal. Well I picked the chef salad (which was remarkably healthy, it only had croutons which I ate around) and used the teeniest bit of dressing you can imagine. BUT while I was sitting there filling out a test, I wound up eating two biscuits Honestly, when I realized what I had done it was soooo hard not to get extremely upset with myself . . but life goes on . .
The workout
Squats
15xBW
15xbw
Push ups
2 x15
Seated rows
15x20
15x20
Step Ups
15xBW
15xBW
Prone Jackknife
2x8
I did everything according to the program, and it did feel MUCH more natural today. I left the gym wore out from the workout (good and sweaty) but not wondering if my legs were going to hold me up to make it back to the apartment
As for food so far, I am at 1290 calories so far for the day (without dinner and snack), and my protein is okay, probably around 80ish right now. I did have a protein shake after my workout, even though I didn't want to have one. You hear that you 'have' to do it, so I was scared not to.
New Goal!
Working at Cracker Barrel I MUST not allow myself to eat biscuits and 'southern' food all day!!!
Sounds like you're on a good track. It does feel really good to force yourself to do the workouts when you feel like skipping. I find that once I'm at the gym I'm fine, and I enjoy it and feel great after; it's the getting up and going that's hard. So good for you!
Don't worry too much about the food. You will slip up, and that's ok; but you'll also find that the longer you eat healthy, the easier it is to pass up the temptations. Don't beat yourself up, put it behind and move on.
Congrats on the new job, and I don't think you did too bad w/regards to that "slip up" at Cracker Barrel. It'll happen, and the only thing you can do is move on and upward. Good habits do take a while to cultivate - I think somewhere around 3 months or so.
Another day in the books here in beautiful Tennessee! I am sure we are going to pay for this awesome weather we are having at the present, but it surely is nice to enjoy it now
So, day 1 of official training at the new job, which went 'okay'. (Serving is old hat to me, so that isn't a problem) AND I enjoyed the chef salad with NO croutons and NO biscuits for lunch
*total side note, but I surely wish that Cracker Barrel had nutrition info available. They have an apple bran muffin that I would like to have as my carbs, but I know that sometimes those things are just 'made' to look healthy.*
~ Why the HECK are lunges so hard for me?! You can't believe how I struggle with these things. I am literally hurting from the 2nd one. And I have such a hard time with form as I continue. I still didn't make the full second set
~ The deadlifts were a struggle too this time (maybe more so than last time, even though the weights are the same). I had to break up the sets just a bit (resting for about 30 seconds before the last five). They weren't impossible, but to keep my form I had to take my time.
I am staying on course with my calorie counts, and sometimes coming in just under. Always getting at least 120+ grams of protein though.
Pondering:
To get better at lunges would it be a good idea just to do a set of them daily, when I have the time? Would that help to build it up or would it be overworking those muscles and not allowing recoup time?
I am scared it's going to take me a really long time to get anywhere close to good at these things
My .02 is that you should just follow the program and trust that improvement will come. You are in a caloric deficit, so that's going to make workouts harder in general. Pushing things too much could result in injury or possibly stall fat loss.
But I'm still fairly new to this myself. Maybe it's just my inherent laziness kicking in.

I was kind of wondering the same thing myself, but for squats. After far too much time online yesterday reading and watching videos, I'm thinking I will stretch every day but not do the exercises daily. Then again, I'm just guessing. Will be interested in seeing more opinions, too!

Don't worry about the time it'll take for you to master the moves. Lunges give a lot of folks a hard time. I've lunged so often btw. completing NROLFW and my current running program, and they still give me pause on occasion. Don't sweat it.
This very recent thread dealt w/lunges. I personally wouldn't bother doing the lunges daily. It's more helpful if you can look at yourself lunging in the mirror, or have a workout partner observe you. And if you search through the NROLFW/NROL threads in the forums, you'll most likely find that many folks have posted similar issues, and found answers too.
Lunges are so intense. I'm starting to work them in my workout also. I can squat so well, but because I'm so tight, I think that's what makes lunges hard. Which makes them so necessary for our bodies, it's a good stretch.
Kevin Larrabee of The Fit Cast. In some of the early episodes (and maybe later ones; I'm not caught up) he tried protein powders mixed with various soft drinks.

Today I woke up craving hummus. A simple thing, but I thought about it until I decided to go to the store and buy some. I didn't have great confidence that Wal-mart would carry a really good hummus so I decided to go to Earth Fare.
Earth Fare is the new breed (at least to the South) of supermarket that caters to the 'yuppie' crowd. A place where all the 'cool and trendy' 20 and 30 somethings go and do all their shopping in exercise clothes. Everything is organic, lots of barrels of bulk food, etc.
Now, I will be the first to admit that I am not really 'cool' enough to be shopping at a place like this, but they do actually let my kind in, as long as we purchase something on every visit and don't eat too many of the free samples.
I always enjoy going there, but today I actually took some time to notice my surroundings and make a few notes. Here are some of the things I took notice of:
It's not the hard to get a good parking space there. A lot of them park towards the middle/end of the parking lot (presumably for the extra exercise) so there was several of the good spots available. I circled for a moment, but chose a spot somewhere near the middle (after all, I didn't want to look like a loser)
They really do shop in exercise clothes. It was sort of amazing, probably 60% of customers were in a variety of spandex and athletic wear. Now technically I could have went in exercise clothes myself because I had just gotten done at the gym BUT when you are past a certain weight (slightly porkly) people do not assume you have just come from the gym when you are wearing exercise clothes, they think you are wearing them because they are more comfy. Not nearly as cool.
My course of shopping took me to the deli. I bought a 1/4 lb of scottish smoked salmon. It looked so good and I had never bought Scottish salmon before. Since I am Scot-Irish myself, I figured I would probably be genetically geared to like it even more than 'regular' smoked salmon. I was right, the salmon was awesome. Genetic science is a wonderful thing.
Turns out that 'free range' is about as popular a term as organic is. The meat section was loaded with pictures of happy, frollicking chickens that were presumably just that happy right up until the moment of decappitation. My salmon didn't have any such accompanying information, and so I actually do not know it's mental state at time of death.
There are a lot more types of hummus out there than I ever knew existed. In fact, it had it's own refridgerated case. The girls beside me in white nike exercise wear chose roasted red pepper, but I stuck with 'classic'. Like I said, I'm not trendy, just visiting.
So as I headed to the checkout with my two prized purchases (having serenspiously taken a just a small bite sample of the salmon already) the sleek business man in front of me slips on a jellied pitted prune that someone had dropped on the floor off the 'completely organic' salad bar. He skids momentarily, but catches his balance and averts what would no doubt be a catastrophe.
Three employees rush to his aid (one from sushi, the nice hippie that gave me my salmon at the deli, and one from the whole grain bakery). The business man just put his hand out comfortingly and told them all it was okay. "It's a good thing that I keep in shape. It's all about balance" he told them, and flashed a perfect smile at me. I smiled back. My two front teeth are a little big, so I didn't smile back as big as he had.
Once at the counter, the 105 lb really perky cashier took care of me. "Did you bring your own bag?" she asked. "Um, no I didn't" I respond. I glance behind me in line and all three people behind me have their little linen bags tucked up under their arm. I smile boldly at her (I will not cower) and read the sign above her head that tells me that not using paper bags helps you get more gas mileage out of your car (because of the weight of paper?)
She smiles balefully and rings up my purchases. Scottish salmon apparently do run a little more pricey than 'plain ol' salmon, but no doubt worth it. I pay with a smile on my face and pick up my two precious items. She never did offer me a bag, but I figure it will look trendier to walk out without one anyway.
When I go outside, it is raining buckets. As I walk to my car past all the open parking spaces getting drenched I figure it was a pretty good trip to Earth Fare.
Who knows, if I stick with weight lifting, one day I may suit up in spandex and buy the roasted red pepper hummus myself ?
**I'll post about my day later, I just to stick this in here for some fun**

LOLOL! This was hilarious. I read the paragraph about the chicken and salmon's mental state to my husband. He was reminded of a South Park episode. Don't know if you watch(ed) that show, but it was the Thanksgiving special featuring Gobbles the turkey.
Maybe someday, instead of shopping for the hummus, you will be making your own. Using only the MOST organic of chickpeas, tahini made from hand ground sesame, and your own home grown red peppers (nurtured by your very own back yard composter of course).

I wish they did too. They used to be a favoured place to stop in while traveling in the States, but I think the last time we tended to stick to Subway and such.

The new thing here (in all the local grocery stores, not just the upscale ones) is to charge people 5 cents for plastic bags. For a while you could still get paper bags, but that stopped around the time they started selling reusable bags. So now it's bring your own or pay for plastic.
You must check out Juleske's training log for a thorough discussion of hummus. It took place several weeks ago, so you might have to search back some pages. Worth it.
Oh my goodness, I needed that laugh!!! What a shopping trip you had. I'm also thinking about that Scottish smoked salmon. I picked up some at an Italian grocery store by me a few months ago for a dinner party, and that is good eatin'.
Thanks girls for the nice compliments on my writing! I enjoy that store a lot actually, it just struck me today how genuinely 'different' it is from other environments.
Snarila ~ (Leigh?) I think that part of the writing was my favorite too. LOL. I can't say I have ever seen that on South Park. That is one of those shows that I'll watch until they say something "too" irreverent, I flip the channel. Some of their skits are funny though
Anne ~ Yeah, I am all for saving the enviroment, but sometimes they companies go too far. They are relaying their cost of doing business onto the consumer, and masking it as some sort of environmental cause. Earth Fare actually does offer paper bags, but I do think they charge for them, not sure
Lover ~ thanks for the hummus link. I posted in the recipe forum hoping to get a good recipe. I googled it, but there are about a million of them out there, and I don't really know my own preference. Just that I like the hummus I have eaten.
Native ~ It really was good salmon. I am actually planning to study into it a bit. Honestly, I had never even seen it before.
OKAY . . . answering all y'all makes me realize that I don't really know a lot of names. It seems impersonal to use someones screen name at some point. This also lets me realize that I have never introduced myself
My name is Cadi (pronounced Kay-dee) as you might assume, my nickname has always been Katydid (thus the screen name) 77 is the year I was born, so that makes me . . . um. . . about . . . 25years old LOL
(fun fact: I am Scot-Irish and my name is actually Gaelic word that means 'rythmatic dance')
Exercise today:
45 min walking on the treadmill. I walked about 2 1/2 miles and alternated the incline up and down a few times.
Food:
B: 3 eggs, and two pieces of 40 cal wheat toast
S: 1/4 lb. Scottish smoked salmon
S: Skinny cow fudge bar
S: hot tea
D: 2/3 c. rice, 1 c. navy beans, some banana pepper rings, 1/2 chicken breast
S: two fiber one blueberry muffins, about 12 oz 2% milk
total calories: about 1600, enough protein
Had a fun day, with the Earth Fare trip, and had a good sweat in the gym.
ALSO I got the foam roller in the mail today! YAY! I haven't used it yet, but I am looking forward to doing just that soon.
My workout tomorrow will have to be either earlier than normal or later. I am going to work at 10:30 and will work until 6pm, and then have to be at church around 7pm. I also have to stay after church to practice the song I am singing for my brother's wedding in a few weeks (we are making the soundtrack ourselves)
Onward!!

Don't worry about the introductions. I think you've done a better job of it so far than a lot of us, myself included, LOL.
My name is Joyce, and since I was also born in '77, that would make me 25 years old, too.
I'd prolly enjoy Earth Fare a lot as well. I shop at Whole Foods regularly, even though there are other (and better) ways of getting high-quality, organic food. My BIL is a fine example of that - he has his own garden, doesn't buy a lot of packaged meat and veggies, hunts instead, and trades meals with his neighbors. I wonder how the Earth Fare/Whole Foods crunchy-granola crowd would react if they knew that he hunts for his meat supply. He usually gets venison, but more often he kills and eats groundhog because that's the most plentiful animal in his area. If their numbers ever went down, he'd stop there and move onto another protein source that is robust. And he's been called a redneck for that, but... isn't it also a little weird consuming animals that have been factory-farmed? Makes ya think.
Anyway, now I have to go for another Whole Foods run soon, based on all this, LOL.
**I'll post about my day later, I just to stick this in here for some fun**
LOVED this! If you have any more slice-of-life type things, keep 'em coming!

While wearing exercise gear, of course, because people may be looking in the windows and will have to see how trendy you are.
And then you can be trendier yet and and sue them for voyeurism.

Hi there! Loved your Earth Fare story. Wish I had one nearby. Instead, I stick to grocery shopping at 4 different places because each place has something the other doesn't it seems! As for hummus, I think my post was in Juleske's log that was linked above, but basically you need garbanzo beans, tahini, and possibly olive oil...the rest is up to you! I like hot stuff so mine usually has some kind of hot peppers involved.
Good luck with your goals. Late on the welcome, but welcome I just started my second round of NROL4W this week, so we aren't far off being in the same place in the program.
I also thoroughly enjoyed your post Hi, I'm Bethany. Born in 80 which apparently makes me 22 And I make hummus. I even use my own homegrown (organically grown actually) garlic when I make it :p If you have one of those magic bullet blenders it's super easy to make. I just make the basic stuff myself. I can post the recipe if you'd like It's a big hit around here and goes well with organically grown vegetables that you cut up and prepare while wearing jogging outfits. The flavor isn't right if you don't wear the proper attire, though.

Heya Joyce! Your BIL sounds cool. What part of the country does he live in? Is his life 'modern' in other ways? a/c, cars, that sort of thing?
Does he just feel really strongly about living 'basic'?

Hey, I have been reading your log quite a bit. I like the bee's knees. Around here that is a fairly common saying, so it sounds like my neck of the woods.

Hey Bethany, I would love that recipe. I have the cans of chic peas, that I intend to use after I finish up my Earth Fare Hummus. I do have the jogging outfit. Of course, like Daddy always said, some pants are made to be 'stretch' pants, and other pants have no choice
Okay, today turned out to be not as rough as expected. Did have one bump in the road but it's all part of the ups and downs.
Workout 3 of A stage 1
Squats
5lbsx12
10lbsx12
Push ups
2xbwx12
Seated rows
30x12
40x12
Steps ups
2x5x12
Prone jackknife
2x8xbw
Notes:
~The workout went really smoothly. Today was the first time I added weight to the squats and step ups. Both felt MUCH better than they have been.
~ My concern about today was that even though it felt like a good workout, I didn't feel like I 'left it all on the gym floor', so to speak. It was odd not to feel like I might crumble to the ground while walking out the door.
~It really is amazing to see your body building strength. I def need to add weight next time too, I just don't feel like I did enough
Eating:
~This is where I had the bump today. I drank muscle milk for breakfast, and the low cal chef salad for lunch. So my calories when I got home was only up to about 550
~Then I did my workout and was in a hurry and forgot to eat any protein and headed straight to church.
~ At church I was STARVING, and the pastor preached about food
~So, I had so many calories left for the day (1400) that I just got chicken tenders and french fries when we went out to eat. Honestly, I think the meal came up to maybe 1000 calories (and probably not quite that much) but the fat content was high. I had five tiny fingers, a piece of bread, 1 1/2 oz of sauce, and the fries.
~I don't guess today was a failure because I was still at a deficit, and I think my calories only came up to 1600ish?
Pondering:
When you are really low on calories like that, is it better to eat something like chicken tenders that are not 'good' food and up the calories for the day? or just end the day really low on calories? which is better for the diet?

Thanks for stopping by my training log. I've been reading yours and getting more of a hang on how to do this thing.
Lol about the bamboo! Shame though... and I am known as the Enell girl amongst some friends because I.m always on about how great they are. I have 3 currently and though they give 'uniboob' effect, bounce is minimal (and I'm a 34F). Did you get one in the end? They aren't the comfiest. Shockabsorber is good too if not leaping about particularly, though levels are a factor.
When you are really low on calories like that, is it better to eat something like chicken tenders that are not 'good' food and up the calories for the day? or just end the day really low on calories? which is better for the diet?
That's a toughie. For me personally, on a WO day I'd likely eat anyway since I know my body needs something to repair my muscles. Seems like it's a case of some materials being better than no materials.
But if I had an off day from training, maybe I'd just stick with the lower cals--at least as long as it wasn't too drastic a deficit. I also always have nuts in my apartment, so if worse came to worse I guess I could stick it out and eat a handful when I got home.

My BIL lives in central New Jersey, which is not too far from the more rural southern and northwestern areas of the state; that's where he does his hunting. He's just very much into food and a practical sort, which is why he started his garden and eventually drifted into hunting, because his buddies would come back from their trips with venison steaks and jerky. The food bartering came about because a few years ago when he'd moved into his home, he'd ask neighbors to help him out w/repairs, but he couldn't afford to repay them in cash. So, he figured that giving them his homemade casseroles would be a good compensation alternative. After a while, the swaps became frequent because he and the neighbors simply like eating, LOL. One of his neighbors even grows his own grapes in his backyard, and gives my BIL a bottle of his homemade wine every year.
I slept in today tooooo long, but gosh did it feel good
I had this idea of getting up and either bike riding, or walking for 45 min or so that I had some cardio in. This did not happen.
My goal is to lift three days a week, and do some sort of real cardio for two days a week. I am on track, provided I don't take too many other lazy days this week.
My dietary stats for today:
Calories: 1650
Protein:125?
Fat: not sure, but low, I ate lean all day
All in all a good day, even if I were a tad lazy. lol
** I am going to have to start eating more calories earlier in the day, it is hard to get them in when it's 8pm and you are only up to 800 calories or so. That keeps happening to me
