Month 6 Update for Jan-Jul 2009 Women's Challenge - FINAL UPDATE

June had some tough moments for me in spite of working with Eric due to work-related travel getting me off schedule the first week and then I tweaked my back (mid-right) during one of my favorite lifts, the Sumo Deadlift. The back tweak was a real impediment that took about 3 weeks to completely heal but I also struggled at times mentally and suffered on some of my energy workouts as a result.

In spite of the minor challenges, I gained noticeable strength and muscle definition in my back (sorry, no pic of that since the lighting and resulting pic didn't show what I wanted!!! ). Eric has amped up the stretching and mobility work for July and I'm pretty excited about the increased focus on resolving my flexibility deficits.

Lastly, I still struggle with carrying more fat than I want. I want it gone so I can better see and enjoy the fruits of my labors. Not much else to say here that I haven't said a million times already! However, I didn't totally start this challenge as a fat loss effort but more as a get stronger effort and I've been successful on that front so I can be pleased with my achievements over the last 6 months.

Goals:
  • Lower my body fat to about 15-17%, whatever ends up looking good. Hard to say exactly until I get there. Goal is to look lean and athletic, not just thin. PROGRESS UPDATE 7/4/09 - Didn't happen but not going to stress over it.
  • Get stronger in 2009. I would like to be using the 45lbs plates on my oly bar on a regular basis. I would like to squat my body weight. I would like to be able to perform chin-ups in a workout (say 4 sets of 6) without using a jump stretch band for assistance. PROGRESS UPDATE 7/4/09 - Very happy here since I have increased my deadlifts into the 150-160 range and I'm now doing weighted chin-ups AND pull-ups. I'm very close on the squat (95 lbs) and bench press (105 lbs).
  • Work with a coach to improve my lifting technique. PROGRESS UPDATE 7/4/09 - I've been working Eric Cressey as an online client since the first week of May and will work with him at least through the end of August.
Plans:
  • Follow a strength focused program. PROGRESS UPDATE 7/4/09 - Followed custom strength and dynamic flexibility program from Eric Cressey.
  • Be consistently 90% compliant with nutrition (Naked Nutrition/Precision Nutrition model). PROGRESS UPDATE 7/4/09 - About 85% compliant which isn't good enough for my body fat targets.
  • Get serious about finding a coach PROGRESS UPDATE 7/4/09 - DONE.
Stats:
Measurement1/3/20097/4/2009
Height60 in60 in
Age3839
Weight112.2 lbs116.6 lbs

Beginning Pics (1/3/09):

Current Pics (7/4/09):

I gained almost 4.5 pounds since the beginning of the challenge. Some of that weight is additional muscle but I think the majority of the added weight is fat so I'm not thrilled about that. However, I'm SUPER happy with the strength gains and my training regimen.

Here we go...this is it! And I made a little progress after all. I think what I am most excited about is that my focus has shifted...my primary goal is no longer a scale number or even a body fat number, even though I know that I have lowered my body fat and that was my goal for the challenge. So, changes aren't dramatic but they are there and more noticeable to me in person than in the pictures. It is really hard to tell, but the belly flab is a lot less. I ran this morning with my midriff exposed and I wasn't ashamed. I continue to move in the right direction, and I'm having fun.

Here is my less then stellar final month. I am not happy....2 lb gain. Overall I am happy with my progress - mostly my mental progress. I still have a ways to go.

Oh well. At least I can say I finished.

Goals

Fitness:

1. Complete NROL Fat Loss III then move on to OPT remix or other program. Will finish BFS Spring Phase II this week. Might play around with NROL for a few weeks before moving on.

2. Get under 20% body fat and bring weight into the low 130's. I would like to see 135 or lower by the end of the challenge. 135 - in May and June. Will get back there soon!

3. Deadlift and Squat body weight. Deadlifting 135, Done. I set a mini goal of Front Squatting over 100 and reached it last month.
4. Do 10 chinups – Never got this one.
5. Make NEAT a priority especially at work. Done.

Food:

1. Focus on eating more vegetables. Done.
2. Focus on clean eating - need to cut out some of the junk. My sweet tooth is inevitable. I have been replacing some with fruit lately.
3. The biggest one....clean up my act on the weekends. I tend to let myself go on the weekends, ruining my hard earned deficit from the week. Still finding room in my weekend for a more relaxed approach and higher cals. I know my loss would be bigger without 2 days at maintenance.

Jan./ July / Overall Change(last month change)

Height: 5'7" same n/a
Weight: 142.4 137.2 -5.2(+1.8)*hit a new low of 135.4 in May and June
Body fat: ???
Waist: 27" 26” -.1”(same)
Arms @ bicep: 10.5" 10” -.5 (same)
Waist @ hipbone: 34" 33” -1” (same)
Hips @ widest :35” 34.5 -.5” (-.5)
Thigh above knee: 19" 17.5” -1.5” (same)
Thigh @ Mid point: 22" 21” -1” (same)
Thigh @ top: 24" 22.5” -1” (same)

I apologize for the outfit change...I can not find my other swimsuit. No clue. Also, excuse my strange tan. I was at the lake

Default This is it

I am excited to say that I officially finished a challenge here. I started NROL at the beginning and just finished Hypertrophy and started Strength I last week. I overall don't know what to think about my stats and pictures. Like I said last month, I can tell a huge difference in my legs. After gaining all this muscle I am looking forward to doing some Fat Loss to complete my goals for this year.

I want to congratulate everyone who else who is finishing
!

Thanks, everyone. It's a little odd, though, as this is the only thread I have this problem with and it won't let me add pics.

I had a lot of funny drama getting this in tonight. Long story, anyway, skidding in here at the last minute!

Overall, I am pleased with this challenge's results. I have lost 16 pounds, a little short of my 18 pound goal, but respectable. I am happy that I am now only 2 pounds short of a total 50 pound loss since September, 2006, and I now weigh 80 pounds less than my high thirteen years ago, when pregnant with my middle child.

I'm not totally happy with the pictures, but it will have to do. Over in my log I'll do more detailed ones since part of the drama is my retake pictures. One of my big accomplishments of the last six months has been a revolution in my posture, but today, my right shoulder is acting up because of all the shifting. I actually have inflammation in my ribcage from all of the adjustment.

Here are the stats:

January, 2009
weight 153
Bust 37
Waist 30
Abdomen 35
hips 37

July, 2009
Weight 137 -16
Bust 35 -2
Waist 28 -2
Ab 32 -3
Hips 35 -2

Pics:

Whoops, having picture issues! I'll post the other pics in a separate post since it's going to take a few minutes!

I hate that the pictures don't match very well, but it's the best I can do for now!

I still have work to do, but I am very happy with the results I have gotten in the last two challenges. Thanks so much to Jane and to all who participated. It's been a great ride!

OK, well now this thread looks all screwed up for me here at work. I'll have to wait until I get home (where it doesn't look screwed up!) to get all the finalists lined up and put up a poll for the final vote.
