Ha ha! Just been looking at Rachel Cosgrove's blog and reading her entry from the beginning of June about what she ate when she visited Britain. Too funny (to me as a British person), especially the comment her hairdresser made:
""What in the heck do eat while you are there? There is nothing healthy, is there?"
Nice to know we have such a good reputation in the old ol' US of A!

Funny cuz as an American living here I have the opposite view! America is full of crap food everywhere!!!

I agree with Gen; there is crap everywhere in America. Just look at the fourteen fast food joints on every intersection, and the cereal aisle and the frozen food aisle in the grocery store. I mean, Krispy Kreme doughnuts? Baskin Robbins? Pizza Hut? I admit, I do like to eat some of that stuff, on rare occasions, but here people eat like that every day.
I don't know enough about what they eat in Britain to comment on that, but I do have a rather funny story about the time I visited London as a young teen. My mom and I went into some kind of bakery, and they had something called a sausage pasty. It looked good, so I asked for "a sausage p-ay-sty" and the girl gave me a hard stare and said "it's p-as-ty." Now, I was very naive, and didn't know about "pasties" that are worn by, say, Las Vegas showgirls, so it didn't strike me as funny until years later when I finally realized that everyone in line was probably picturing dancing girls with circles of sausage covering their nipples!

Yeah, America is known for being full junky fast food and eating lots of red meat and I suppose Britain is known for its stodge but then we are a cold weather country (she says sitting in the middle of a supposed heatwave!). Anyway, it's true to a degree but I think overall, especially amongst the middle classes, we're a healthier country now. Nowadays it's all about organic food.
Pasties are from Cornwall down in the SW of England. I think they were created as a kind of portable meal for miners or someone. A filling of meat and vegetables wrapped in pastry. I'm not really a pastry fan so tend to avoid them but they're being served at a wedding I'm going to in Cornwall in a few weeks. Very calorific! And no, they're probably not good for showgirls trying to cover their nipples!
My own transatlantic food confusion - when I was younger my family and I went to the US (New England, New Hampshire, somewhere up there). We were in a small town diner and my dad was ordering the food and asked for my meal to come with tomato sauce (we sometimes call ketchup this). A little confusion ensued with my dad even pronouncing tomato as 'tom-ay-to' (I still cringe now when I think of it!). Anyway, my food came with a proper tomato sauce, not ketchup. Parents, who'd have 'em?
Can't believe I'm at the end of Stage Two already.
Widegrip deadlift from box
Actually, I did deficit deadlifts from the floor instead1 x 10 @ 40kg (88lbs)
1 x 10 @ 42.5kg (93.7lbs) - remembered the wide grip on this set
Bulgarian split squat
2 x 10 @ 10kg (22lbs) plate Underhand lat pulldown 2 x 10 @ 31.5kg (69.5lbs)
Reverse lunge from box w/forward reach
2 x 10 @ 2x6kg (2x13lbs)
Dumbbell prone Cuban snatch
Actually did these at the end, after the cobras, as my gym only has one adjustable bench and it was being used
2 x 10 @ 2kg (4.4lbs)
Swiss ball crunch 2 x 10 with hands at ears Reverse crunch 2 x 10 Lateral flexion
It was hot and getting late so I only did one set of lateral flexion and one set of prone cobras1 x 10 - Hanna 2
Prone cobra
1 x 60 sec
It was hot, I was sweaty and wearing running capris but I got it done and on reduced calories. This is what I posted yesterday but in red is the real info:
1596 cals 1704 cals
40c/35p/25f 41c/33p/26f
159g carbs 175g carbs
140g protein 139g protein
44g fat 49g fat
I had some dairy-free ice cream while I cooked dinner (my excuse - it was really hot! I was really hot!). We haven't had this stuff in the house since last summer (I would have eaten it all if we did). There's not much left so I'll allow myself to have it in controlled portions that fit into my cals and macros and then when it's gone, it's gone.
Out to the Turkish restaurant tonight and I think I have a choice of veg or spinach pancakes, or vegetable kebabs. I have an hour between finishing work and meeting at the restaurant so I think I may walk there. I will not go on the tube in this heat (the paper reported it getting as hot as 45˚C/113˚F down there!!) So it's either a bus stuck in traffic or walking. Walking would take me about 45 mins and walking at my calculated snails pace (due to the heat) I would burn about 165 cals.
A little confusion ensued with my dad even pronouncing tomato as 'tom-ay-to' (I still cringe now when I think of it!). Anyway, my food came with a proper tomato sauce, not ketchup.
Well, no need to cringe, because we do pronounce tomato with a long "a" sound. (I'm assuming that's what you meant, rather than the "ah" sound, like tomahto.)
congrats on finishing stage 2! After my try with it yesterday, I decided I'm going to take my rest week before really starting it.
All this talk of pasties is making me hungry, LOL. I get all weak when I'm around flaky, meat-filled pastries. It doesn't matter if it's a turnover, empanada, etc. - I'm all over it. I think pasties are also huge in Michigan (I'll have to double-check w/a friend who lives there, and they may be different from the Cornish version).

Yeah, but my dad pronouncing it with an American accent as if the guy couldn't understand the word if said in the English way is not good! My Dad saying anything in another accent is not good but especially an American one.

Well, I was just out and about in this crazy heat doing chores and I'd thought about chocolate, in particular a certain chocolate bar so I looked in 2 shops but they didn't have it! Well, the fat loss gods must be looking down on me today! I was saved!

Eh, like anywhere I think it also depends on where you're at in the U.S. Boulder, CO, is also very much into organic food, community-supported agriculture, etc. Probably started out more on the vegetarian end of things, but there are several carnivores who are becoming more aware of organically grown food as well.
Nice job on the workout, and hurray for fat loss gods looking out for you!

I shall try to live up to my reputation! LOL
And yes, stage three is WAY fun! I love the DB Snatch the best.
Celestialmom - I love your avatar by the way. I've only done archery once, about 14 years ago, but I'd love to do it again, especially in the woods!
Brought the NROLFW book on the train so I could look through the Stage Three exercises. In the B workout, you have to do back extensions but I don't have this machine in my gym so will have to do prone cobras instead, so is it 3 sets of 6x60sec reps? Cos then I have to do the prone cobras again at the end of the workout (3 x 90secs). I'll be spending a lot of time face down on the mats!
Yesterday's food became a bit of a write-off. I read a post in Karla's log about eating before an event where you have no real control over what you eat but did I use any of that advice? No, I ate what I'd usually eat when I leave enough cals for a small dinner, not a meal out! Anyway, it was in a Turkish restaurant so there was lots of meat. I kept looking at everyone's plates and thinking 'Just think how much protein I could be eating right now if I ate meat?' and then I looked down at my carb heavy, protein lacking meal. Then there was cake although not a huge slice. On the journey home, I had the chocolate bar that the fat-loss gods had earlier saved me from. It was late, they must have gone to bed. But it was good. Oh, and I did walk to the restaurant in the end.
Anyway, I listened to Leigh's podcast 'Starve after a Binge?' on the way home and decided that this week hasn't been great. I felt like I got off to a good start last week and must get back to that. I felt really good. I'm gonna blame the heat which should subside over the weekend so I'll be able to manage some running next week.
Today's food:
1324 cals
38c/37p/25f
127g carbs
122g protein
37g fat
And I will stick to this today!
Got my Myotape yesterday. Did a couple of rough measurements but it was late and I had to go to sleep (before being woken by the cat and then going back to sleep!). It seems really nice to use. The problem I have is measuring the same spot each time. How do you manage that? I thought I could get a picture of me (or just an outline pic of a person) and mark where I want to take the measurements for reference. Any ideas? Waist is fine but everything else can easily vary.
Are you SURE there isn't a back extension machine at your gym. They can look different...there are various types. It's just such a common piece of equipment, I'd be surprised you didn't have one. Jules talked about this in her log....saying they didn't have one....and once we discussed, she realized they certainly did!
It's a small gym with a few machines and I certainly haven't seen anyone using one but I'll have another look.
The gym I used to go to had a leg press (common piece of equipment), then they updated the machines and didn't replace the press but did get a leg curl machine. Very strange.
Just make sure you don't use the machine with the attached weight stack. The one you want is a "machine" that's really just leg and/or butt supports to hold you in position so you can lean forward and lift back up.
I know some people have gotten the two confused, and were using the one with weight stack, which apparently can be very dangerous for your back.

Yay for Myotapes!
What I do is narrowest part of the waist, and widest part of everything else. But your idea about marking a pic of yourself of where you want to measure is great! I may have to do that myself.

I found this picture over on Kevin Larrabee's site. I've been trying to find a pic of what I'm aiming for but in all the pics I've seen of Jessica Biel she looks like she has quite broad shoulders, which I don't. Anyway, I'd be quite happy to look like this:
We didn't have a back extension "apparatus" either. What I did to make it slightly different than cobras was to use a swiss ball with my feet stuck up against a wall, or even moved a weight bench over to where I could put my feet under the db rack, and hold a weight in my hands. Kind of like making my own back extension machine.

Actually, just remembering, I've done back extensions on a ball before. So you just hold a DB against your chest and lie over the top of the ball, feet wedged against something?
I'm probably best sticking with the ball as we only have two benches! One adjustable, one fixed. If I don't have to use one, I won't as they're always being used!
Yes, that's how I did them on a ball. I liked them on the bench better, b/c I felt like I had more control. But anything is better than doing endless sets of prone cobras!
Right, I did my measurements, weighed myself and worked out how to take some decent photos! I also realise that the bow on my pants is not in the centre.
122.5lbs
21.7 BMI
23.6% body fat
29lbs fat
This was my first go with the Myoptape so the measurements are much more accurate and therefore some of them are higher than before.
Neck: 12"
Right arm: 10.5"
Left arm: 11"
Under chest: 28"
Over chest: 32.25"
Waist: 26"
Across navel: 30.63"
Hips: 36" (still having trouble getting the same spot each time)
Right thigh: 21.63"
Left thigh: 21.63"
Right calf: 13.63"
Left calf: 13.63"
Stage Three, Workout A1
One-arm DB snatch
1 x 6 @ 8kg (17.6lbs)
2 x 6 @ 10kg (22lbs)
DB single leg Romanian DL
Balancing was really challenging, although when I looked in the book at home it did say use light weights
2 x 6 @ 2x6kg (2x13lbs)
1 x 6 @ 2x8kg (2x17.6lbs) Barbell bent-over row Love these!
2 x 6 @ 20kg (44lbs)
1 x 6 @ 25kg (55lbs)
DB single-arm overhead squat
These were really strange!
2 x 6 @ 4+8kg (8.8+17.6lbs)
1 x 6 @ 4+10kg (we don't have a 5kg DB) (8.8+22lbs) DB incline bench press
1 x 6 @ 2x8kg (2x17.6lbs)
2 x 6 @ 2x10kg (2x22lbs)
Plank
Argh!
75 sec
90 sec!
72 sec
Reverse wood chop
2 x 11.25kg (24.8lbs)
1 x 13.75kg (30.3lbs)
Body Matrix
Well, of course I messed this up, I was bound to.
Did my squats (so many!), then lunges and realised my knees were hitting the floor so I paused my stopwatch and got a mat. And you guessed it, I forgot to restart my watch.
So, I rested for 5 mins (as a guess), forgetting that I was meant to rest for twice as long as it took me. Blah.
2nd time: 4.21 mins
My quads were sooooo tired, I walked slowly to the bus stop and was glad to sit down. I will do better next time. At least I was in the studio on my own.
This morning I can feel I used my hamstrings and shoulders.
you're doing great! I don't know if you posted "before" pics, so I don't know how much you changed, but you're well on your way to looking like your ideal!
(And another poster with that tiny waist; oh how I envy you!)
That workout sounds hard. But don't you love that "I definitely used these muscles" feeling?
The thing I really want is to reduce my body fat. From the pics, you can see I am a pear shape (hence the smaller waist) so I'd like to reduce my lower body but also around the tops of my arms. I am really pleased that my stomach is looking better. I don't have quite so much 'excess' when I sit down now! But to achieve all this I really need to keep my diet in check which hasn't really happened this week. But onwards and upwards!
My hamstrings were aching this morning! I rolled around on a foam roller before starting my workout. I need to look up how to roll hamstrings properly.
Stage Three, Workout B1
I was in the gym a while as this was my first 3B workout.
BB Romanian DL/bent over row
1 x 6 @ 20kg (44lbs)
2 x 6 @ 25kg (55lbs)
Partial single-leg squat
2 x 6 @ bw
1 x 6 @ 6kg (13lbs) Wide grip lat pulldown
3 x 6 @ 31.5kg (69.4lbs)
Back extension
These took a while to work out, due to not having the 'apparatus' to do back extensions
1 x 6 @ bw/ball
1 x 6 @ bw/bench - much better
1 x 6 @ 5kg (11lbs)/bench
YTWL
I think I worked this out...
2 x 6 @ 2kg (4.4lbs)
Swiss ball crunch
3 x 6 lever
Hip Flexion (Prone Jackknife)
3 x 6
Lateral flexion (Swiss Ball Side Crunch)
I liked these.
3 x 6
Prone Cobra
3 x 90 sec
HIIT
15 mins
1 min @ 12, 12.5, 13 + 14kph
(1 min @ 7.5, 7.7, 8 + 8.7mph)
Watching the Men's Wimbledon Final - I want Roddick to win. Federer always seems so smug. Of course, I'd rather Nadal won!
Oh, and my 'before' pics are in my first post on the first page of my log. Not very good photos though. Glad I worked out how to take decent ones.
Yes, I looked back, and you have shaped up A LOT!!! Especially easy to notice in the side views. You're getting a great rear, and definition in ab area. Great work!
And, btw, using Cassandra's formula from her Perfect Body Diet book, I too, am a "pear"; but I think that must be a mistake, because I don't see that curvy waistline when I look in MY mirror. . .sigh.
