Yes, I hope to have some local fitness friends soon. I haven't made any at the 24 Hour I go to. And yes! I'd love to meet up to work out--Peter is interested in training for the next Couples Competition, so maybe we can do something around that, too.

We should have a JP S. California meetup! There are a lot of us down here.
Sounds like an excellent idea!

Thanks baby. I'm freaking out still. The WORST part is that I feel so friggin' stooopid for not reading that fine print.

Me too.. Stingo's log name change was already a big change, but you win the prize (like the challenge) for the most abrupt change.

Well, I didn't know it was a competition! Whoo hoo! (although not sure how I could have made it less abrupt....)

I was tempted to use Karkass VonLichterschlit, but it was taken.

Hey Elisabeth--

Wow, lol, you changed your log name. I was confused, would never have guessed you were Fang. Anyway, I've been mostly MIA here the past few weeks, just checking in briefly. But I'm getting caught up now. Bummer that you weren't able to take a computer test and get instant results. That wait would kill me! OMG. We'll definitely have to get together soon. I left you a message somewhere on Facebook (never can tell if I'm leaving a private message or posting for the world to see!) Anyway, I really love your family pics. You have a beautiful family...nice kids, gorgeous parents, and I know that because I've seen the family in action, but you are all also very photogenic.

Fang is one of my nicknames. I just didn't want to make it TOO easy for potential clients to see semi-nekkid pics of me.

Very nice, Roland.

In Palm Springs today. At the Riviera, which is far nicer than I expected. It's a cool summer, but it's too frigging hot for me by the pool so I am enjoying the newly decorated room.

Did a bodyweight workout yesterday-=still working on fixing my squats, so I did:
bw squat 2x20
pushup 2x15

stepups 2x20
silly row--2x20didn't have decent weights, used some decorating thing in the room, so then did dips--1x20

Single leg bridge--2x20
plank 2x120

Mainly I am working on my form still--I have to concentrate a lot esp. with the squats. I did the circuit with 30 sec rests. Just a little to get my blood going so I could do my foam rolling and such. I am considering getting a massage today since I saw a place in town that's cheap.

We're celebrating our 20th anniversary on this trip. Pretty wild. It's nice to not have any kids with us, though, and it's amusing to watch the Paris Hilton wannabes. I have never, ever been to Palm Springs, so at least I can say I was here.

I'm working on a new program with help from Galya, so I'll be putting it together today and starting probably tomorrow or Thursday, depending when we get back home tomorrow. I had a long talk with her and she confirmed what I suspected--that I need to put together a program that doesn't debilitate me for days after each workout. Since I have enough muscle, I can focus on complexity rather than straight weight. I think it will be particularly good since then I can address my imbalances in my workout instead of on a separate day. I am considering doing the challenge coming up, since I want to lose about 10 pounds and work on my legs in the next 6 months. A lower-weight program will help me keep on the fat loss track, since heavy weights make me into a crazy starving person.

I'm off to do some reading....thinking 2 nights is way too short for vacation....

I considered it--but the last time I went on a tram was at Lake Tahoe and I didn't enjoy it at all--something about swinging in the air thousands of feet up in the sky makes me cower, shivering on the floor. I was intolerant of people who had such visceral reactions to heights in the past--it was my comeuppance for being arrogant. I get a lot of those. Fewer as I get older.

I forgot to address most of this--yep, it's fricking KILLING me. Mostly 'cause I feel like a moron. Did I mention that karma thing? Thanks on the pics. I looked at the summit pics recently and I wanted to mention that you are VERY photogenic. And, I did read the note about the tri but now I CAN"T FIND IT. So unlikely you will be featured in "emails from crazy people". (Well, that, and the fact that it isn't crazy...)

We decided to stay an extra day in Palm Springs. I got a massage yesterday but it was not an expert one to say the least. The woman did not speak one word of english. I don't mean that her english was bad. She did not speak ONE WORD. Now, I don't mind, but it makes me wonder how the hell she can function here. Or if she is a slave of unscrupulous massage-store people smugglers. Lots of things go thru yer head when getting a so-so massage with someone who needs to cut her nails.

Workout today--first of new program. Nothing ground breaking here, still focusing on form and rehab a lot. I worked out in the hotel gym which was very cool because I could see myself from all angles. I even stripped down to my sports bra cause I was fascinated by watching my back. Man, I have huge back muscles. After seeing that I can understand why I get looks in the gym. I have way more musculature than I knew. The good news is that my form is much better and I could confirm it by looking in the mirror. I think that my shoulders are MUCH better but I need to do some progress pics to compare when I get home.

Lat pull down (funky machine--had to experiment with weights)
10x80, 12x100, 12x120
BSS--bodyweightx 15x2

T push ups 2x12
Goblet Squats 12@10#, 12@15

SHELC 15x2
Wood chops 2x20

Clamshells x 20
Cable pull thrux 20
wall slides
reach roll and liftx2x20
scap pushupsx10

I'm doing some foam rolling in a few, and then I think I'll go down and do a little cardio so I can have a beer tonight. I gained 2 pounds or so, and they seem to be real, so I have to tighten my diet up again and get serious. Also, watching myself in the gym allowed me to evaluate my body a little more objectively--and I'm thinking that AT LEAST 10 pounds need to come off. Maybe more. I can't believe I'm saying that, since I never thought I would be this light, and now I'm going to go lighter. Sheesh. I am even considering joining the next challenge, since it would get me thru the holidays and 10 pounds would be perfect in 4 months--not too much so that it's intimidating.

Shoot me now.

I think back muscles look great on women. Very kewl. Hope you enjoyed your vacation

I probably won't be joining the challenge, but losing 10 is also my goal. The summer got away from me a little.

(Dagnabit. I'm glad I noticed your name change before you also changed your pic.)

Nice to see there are still some people left in Cali. I thought for sure they'd all moved out here. Everywhere I look, I'm tripping over CA plates.

Ooh, I just remembered and had to come tell you:

Kid #4, had she been a boy, would have been named Max Fang _LastName_. I'm a big Phyllis Diller fan and think I had hubby actually convinced to go with Fang as a middle name. LMAO Then God smacked me upside the head with a girly girl instead.

Thanks, Bree! I need to put up some back pics. Summertime is so hard with frosty beers around just begging to be drunk....

That's why I staggered it--wanted to give my buds a chance to figger it out.

And why would anyone want to vacation in OK?

OK, that's funny. Are you sure you're not a Hollywood type? They have names like that around here.

Yoga today. We stayed an extra day in PS so I missed the good class. Stupid woman today reminded me why I used to hate yoga so much--what a flake. She told us a lot of totally wild stuff. "We usually only breathe with our upper lungs"(pointing to chest) "I want you to use your lower lungs!" (pointing to the area roughly around her ovaries). OK, I understand that it's just an image, but that's just the kind of crap that scares normal people off.

Anyway, it's rough to be back to the grind. One week without kids and several days without housework just ruined me. However, I do feel I got some good perspective and got to think about what my next moves are. I think I will go ahead and do the challenge, with the goal of losing 10-16 pounds, depending on how fast it goes and how many of these pounds I'm seeing on the scale are real. I'm approaching a level of leanness that kind of freaks me out; probably I have only been lower than this about a year or so, when I was 19 and recovering from the acute phase of chronic hepatitis.

Oh, hell. I don't know what I did on this silly laptop keyboard. I am not screaming, really.

So, I have to really be careful now and concentrate on NOT going off the deep end and gaining it all back. I was really displeased that
I (what the hell? I didn't even do anything!) gained the weight over the last month or so, since it means that my perception of maintenance is off--I thought I had it nailed, but I guess I just overdid it. So I need to recalibrate my food intake sensors. I (Jesus christ!!!!WTF???) Oh, it's control i. Ha ha, figured it out. Anyways, trying to describe this is kind of hard when I"m on this silly keyboard. One of the things I've noticed on the way down is that my plateaus have been the time when I figured out what maintenance is at a given weight. So the fact that the scale went up means that I have to adjust down a bit. When I was in PS I decided to get off sugar 'cause it was just getting stupid. Now I'm toying with various ideas including the intermittent fasting, but honestly I'm not sure it's a good idea--although my blood sugar is certainly more stable than it used to be and I don't get the crashes I used to. I'm prolly going to just suck it up and do it the old fashioned way.....hungry and cranky.

OK...off to make dinner. Chicken tacos tonight.

I enjoyed my time at the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City, OK. It was well worth the visit. I remember at the time that everyone was so kind (my father needed a wheelchair for longer walks) and they had us drive up and park near the door (not a parking spot), and offered the use of the freight elevator so he could see the exhibits in the basement. That was about 15 years ago, as I'm sure they have better handicapped facilities now.

Hey! Are you okay girl? I saw on the news before I got on the plane that your town was in danger. Log on soon and let us know what's up. That fire was big and scary last night! I'll get pictures of it for you up soon. Yikes.... I got my fingers and toes crossed for you man.

Also... Thanks for the AMAZING time last night. The food, your Momma and Pappa, the rest of your family were simply wonderful. I could not have asked for a nicer Sat evening.

We're fine. The wind is still favorable--yesterday it started blowing smoke at us so we went to the beach. Looking back toward home, it looked as if a bomb had gone off with the towering clouds of smoke. But today it's still again so the smoke is going straight up, away from us.

It's kind of heartbreaking to watch the flames make their way up the mountains that I love so much. I know it's a "natural" event but so sad to see the smoke billow up--it's going to be years before the landscape recovers, and our hikes in the mountains will be through blackened shrubs and ash for a while. Normally I can see the mountains from my front room window, but all I see now is smoke.

It was great to be able to spend time with you, Karla, and I really look forward to having you around periodically--thank your kids for conveniently moving close to me! After you left we drove up the hill to get closer and see what was going on--it was like a weird street party up near where the sheriff has blocked off the streets. Now the flames are threatening beautiful Mount Wilson and all of the antennas and transmitters--so we may lose cell service but not TV since we get satellite.

The update is, I did do a workout on Friday:

Front Squat 15@30, 12 @45 x 2
Cable seated row 75x2

Step ups @20#x2
upper body russian twist 2x12

SHELC 2x12
Shoulder press 12 @15x2, 12 @ 20x2

Clams--20
Scap. PU x12
Cable pull thrus @15x 15 x2
Wall slides x15
Reach roll lift x 15
Foam rolling
forgot the prone Y's

I'm still experimenting with weights, trying to get a balance so that it's challenging but not debilitating. I'm feeling really good about improvements in my posture and rehab--Karla thought I looked leaner than in May, but I thought about it afterward and concluded that it's just the improvements in my posture that make me look leaner. Having my shoulders back allows the definition to come thru. I've been really careful with my diet the last week and I am sorry to report that the scale is not moving--I did gain fat for sure this summer.

I'm not sure what exactly I should do this week as the smoke is really bad and my lungs are not happy--I used to have asthma so I'm a little sensitive. I'm staying indoors as much as possible, but I am going to have to figure out a workout if I'm not wheezing. Of course I have no inhalers since I threw them out a few months ago--they had all expired. I only just realized this now--since I've worked out recently my asthma has disappeared. One of the nice benefits, I guess.

I wish there was somewhere we could go for a week, but all of the back-to-school events are this week. It's getting depressing being in the house all of the time and I can't work on my garage-basement-yard projects. Sigh. Oh well, there's no shortage of housework to do. Bleah.

Ah... good to see ya again Fang. I caught your status on Facebook yesterday actually and was relieved to see all is "relatively" well. If not for Donna, I would have hiked up the hill with you guys... she was getting tired though and had to drive so I declined the invite. That was fascinating to watch.

I would say that you are in "survival" mode right now and not workout mode. Just take some relax time until the air gets better. Either that or take a drive down to Santa Monica and run along the beach...

Thanks Karla. I did get the doc to send in a script for an inhaler, so I'm going to work out later. I'm anxious with the fire and oddly, my stomach is acting up. That hasn't happened in years. There's just too much going on right now.

Hai!!
THanks, youse guys. It helps to have the good thoughts coming my way.

The good news today is that my hubby started his new job at B of A. Huge, huge relief. He's a mortgage broker and has been working at a small house for a few years--it was great up until about 2 years ago and has been a horror recently--the little houses are pretty much gone and the big banks are doing all the loans now. B of A is a great gig and I'm sure he'll do well there, plus we have benefits and all that great stuff. Whew.

All the school stuff is going on this week, so big transitions for everyone. My oldest is starting at a huge High School--2200 kids, from a tiny charter, but he's an excellent student so he should be ok.

In a way it's good that I don't have my cert yet and won't be able to work as a trainer until later this month so I can get everyone established. The money is still very, very tight though so I look forward to not worrying all the time.

However, it's very worrisome now with the fire--it's threatening beautiful Mt. Wilson above us and they are saying it won't be contained for possibly two weeks! It's a nightmare; can't go outside for more than a few minutes and it's just oppressive to be inside all of the time. I'm feeling very melancholy about the charred remains of all of the hiking trails; at least the firefighters have been able to keep the fire away from most of the homes. But it's devastating to think of how big the fires really are. To give an idea, when we drive up to Santa Clarita, it takes about 35 minutes--and that ENTIRE AREA is on fire.

I'm off to get my inhaler prescription and to take the kids bowling--I'm going to the gym while they bowl. Signing off.

Sending good thoughts your way! The fires look very scary. I didn't realize you were so close.

I would have a hard time staying indoors so much as well. Take care!

Sorry to hear that the fire is close to your area, and I do hope that it's not a major problem for you. Although I know some of the fires are set by people, however they're also a natural thing (which means you can't always avoid them). Again, hope that everything is okay.

Am watching this thing get bigger and bigger today and have special good thoughts going down south to you and your family.

WOW!! Congrats on the job for the hubby. I am so happy for him. I did not realize that he was starting a new job this week. How exciting. We started talking fitness and totally ignored him after awhile.... Doooop.
