JediGirl is my sister and after she got me to go out to the Bod Pod with her this past Sunday, I decided it was time to jump in feet first with this challenge.
Just marking my place for my journal. I will try to get it updated later.
Ok... things have been super crazy for me at work this week, add EXTREME soreness from my new OLY lifting class last saturday and you've got one tired girl!
So... some background is in order I guess. I was always a skinny kid, then I had kids! I was never massively overweight, but 185 was the final straw for me. I went vegetarian and got down to 155 and a (tight) size 13. A few years later, I started doing Body for Life when a friend of mine brought the book over and said "do you think these before/afters are real?" I told her we should find out and we committed to a 12 week challenge. That's when the 'fitness' bug hit me.
Fast forward a couple of years, I competed in figure in 2003... not quite where I needed to be weight wise, but 60 lbs down from my highest weight!!! I placed dead last out of 12 girls. I didn't really enjoy the quarter turn/lucite heel experience and wanted to do bodybuilding instead. Everybody I knew told me, you're not muscular enough, those BB girls will tear you up on stage, your physique is more built for figure... so I took my competition dreams and put them aside.
Fast forward again to 2007, not much more muscular than I was in 2003, but I decided to do it anyways. I was the same weight as my first show... looked TONS better! I was shooting for the light weight class and missed it by 1/4 lb. I was the only person in my class and brought home a trophy. There was 1 lightweight competitor and she took the overall. I LOVED the experience! Had a blast and enjoyed doing my routine!
Here's a comparison shot of 2003 vs. 2007, both at 126.
Of course, that was September of 2007, right before the holidays and right before my caribbean cruise and I'm not sure I've stopped eating junk since!
So, there ya have it... that's why I joined this challenge... cuz I'd like to find myself somewhere in between the current body and the body of Sept. 2007.
Still SUPER SORE from my OLY lifting class on Saturday. My traps and neck are super sore today and I feel like I have whiplash. Lotsa ibuprofen to help. Worked and went home and crashed early. BEAT! I shoulda stayed away from the peppermint bark, but I didn't... it was GOOD too! Curse the office manager for dumping all her holiday left over treats in the breakroom!

Reason: added rest day
Your salad sounds yummy! So does the peppermint bark. What is that? Like candy cane in white chocolate? I loves me a peppermint white chocolate mocha! Damn Starbucks and their yummy holiday drinks!
What's with the candy at work? I had a pecan caramel cluster, but just one! I am very proud of myself!

The salad was good! It's an herb salad, it's more than just lettuce, it's got some nice flavors in it. Yes, it's candy cane crushed up and made into bark with white chocolate... it's so good! My office manager is quite the entertainer and party planner and she makes it, she also makes one with lemon drops in it... I did not touch the lemon one because I didnt want it to be haunting me!
M1 - Grapefruit (I was not hungry at all... which is weird because I was in bed so many hours and didn't eat a bite after dinner.)
M2 - Apple and cottage cheese
M3 - turkey chili w/ beans and cheese

My truck has been in the shop getting a new (rebuilt) engine and it was ready for pick-up today, so I left work at 2 to go get it, then off to get a tail light and head light for it, then home again to put them in. The taillight cover was almost impossible to get off... I seriously thought about knocking it out, replacing the bulb, then taping it with red tape. Finally I got it. Took it to get it inspected and by the time I got back home it was closing in on 6 and I was STARVING!
My numbers for fitday above stop at the 3rd meal because that's all I can log. Dinner was homemade pizza w/ gluten free crust (I tossed the box and dont have the numbers to log) topped w/ pepperoni, cheese, mushrooms, artichokes, peppers and onion, and of course extra mozz to hold all those toppings down! YUMMY! My daughter has IBS/digestion issues and since we decided to cut the gluten from her diet she's been doing much better. This was our first time to have pizza and I dunno why but the same stuff on top of a normal crust and I could eat half the pizza... this one is much more filling. I only ate two pieces and the other two will go with me to work for lunch tomorrow. I REFUSE TO GIVE UP MY PIZZA ONCE A WEEK! But... I will not toss the box next time so that I can log it and see what the numbers work out to be.
Tomorrow is my birthday, I'll be 38... work is having a happy hour for me after work. I'll have red wine. Thursday our IT guy is having a catered lunch for us... I'll try to be reasonable with that too. I'll call this my "break in" week. LOL!
So... after all that I headed out to the garage to practice my lifts. I just started an OLY training class last saturday and I'm really not doing anything yet but portions of the moves. He wanted me to work on all the little different sections this week and maybe I'll be better at them next week.
1. I think I got the deadlift part from the floor up down pat.
2. The hang snatch is so-so... he didnt want me to squat down under the bar, just snatch it up. My shoulders/upper body are not strong and it's a bit of a slow controlled movement for me, I think I can see it being a little easier with the squat tossed in. I'm sure this move is why I was soooooooooo sore the past couple of days.
3. The front squat is good... damn good.
4. The overhead squat... meh. I'm off balance, not got the bar up and locked in place, too far forward... to unsure of the squat in that position. I found it easier to do moving directly into it from the front squat. Just press the bar overhead and go back down. Not sure why. Once I get the first one, I can keep going.
5. Push press is good.
I go back on Saturday. Need to get one more session on my own in before then... maybe thursday night, I'll have lunch to burn off! LOL
Good workout there! The pizza sounds awesome! Now I realize I have everything to make my own - on a pita! I don't have dinner planned so you have me very tempted, but first I have to log food for today and see how many calories I have left. I think not many!
Ok... so last week was a total bust, with the extreme soreness, my birthday, picking up the truck, missing work, making up missed work, and racking up some overtime... I didn't get much accomplished.
The plan for this week is to not let life's little stuff get in the way. The weekend wasnt the best food, but today is on track.
Saturday was OLY lifting class. Lots tire jumps, GHR's, walking lunges (forwards and backwards) w/ HEAVY kettlebells, snatches and OH squats and front squats. Sore again, but not so bad and not so bad in the upper body (the trap/shoulder soreness really kicks my butt!). My butt/hams are feeling it though.
Sunday did 25 mins of cardio on my recumbent bike.
Which brings me to today, Monday. I'm going to try to be diligent about logging my days from here on out.
Today I worked out with my co-worker and that consisted of truck pushing on the top deck of the parking garage... it's roughly a 30 min workout, one time around the deck, then switch driver/pusher and we do it twice each.. I made 1 3/4 times around as my butt/hams are still sore and just exhausted on the second lap. As we become faster pushers, we're going to try to squeeze in a 3rd lap and still have time to eat lunch.
Meals have been good, and I'm targeting 1500-1800 cals at a (p/c/f) split of 50/20/30... A shake before bed and I will be done with today's eats. That puts me at 1533 cals - 47/19/34. Foods were: tuna, chicken, cashews, broccoli, baby carrots, a salad w/ rice vinegar for dressing, Aloha mix (nuts/seeds/raisins/dried fruit) and the protein shake.

I would love to see the lunch time car pushing! I have been taking walks around the pond with a coworker, but that's nothing like the car pushing! Too many cars on our rooftop and I doubt I could get anyone to join me in that effort!
I admire your ability to eat so few carbs. The low carb is killing me. I don't think I could do it. I need to see how many calories I ate today. I know I'm within range, but definitely more carbs than last week - I had some at every meal and air popped popcorn for a snack. The low carb with higher fats does not keep me feeling satisfied. I do much better on low cal with more carbs and fiber.

I do better with lower carbs once I get going... carbs just give me MORE carb cravings. It's easier to stick to my diet with lower carbs.

It's real olympic lifting. It's a coached class at a crossfit. Theres 6 or so people in the class, all at different levels. I found the coach on usaweightlifting.org and he is the only coach in my area that they have certified. He trained Chad Vaughn, who qualified for the olympics last year and back in 2004. I believe he's coached others on the us olympic team, but he is the only one I know of cuz he's on the gym website, apparently has trained there! LOL
Class is canceled next weekend as he, and half of the students in the class are going to a meet in Austin. Class is 3 times a week, but with my work schedule, I cannot get there in time after work.

Happy be-lated birthday!
They were not fun!!! I've done reverse lunges before, but walking, down the middle of the gym with people tossing crazy weights up in the air and throwing them back down made me a little nervous! Thanks for the birthday wishes!
All is well today and on track. Macros were dead on till my afternoon snack of turkey breast when I decided to dip it in honey mustard. I'm pretty darn close though and I gotta admit it was one of the few times that I actually saw 50/20/30 exactly on the fitday pie chart.
Lunch time workout with coworker... did a nice 30 min circuit of kettle bell swings, squats (OLY style, not PL style!), uphill walking lunges, kettle bell snatches, stair jumps (start on the ground and jump with both feet onto the second step) then more swings. The sun was shining and it was a beautiful day! We were sweating!
Dinner tonight is Rosemary chicken with sweet and sour onion jam and olive paste: RECIPE and a salad.
My hand/thumb is driving me nuts... sore and can barely move my thumb. I noticed it after the first OLY class, and hoped it would get better (i've only been to two classes) and its apparently not. I broke it close to 20 years ago and a piece of bone chipped off.... it's now fused to the bone and has grown a little bit. It has never really bothered me before but the wide grip on the bar for the snatches puts pressure right in that crook area between thumb and index finger, right where the knot is. I'm afraid it's not going to be good. I showed it to the coach and he said that if it was a problem, I may have to get it shaved off/removed or something... unfortunately, the doc is going to start out by telling me "if lifting class is irritating it, quit taking lifting class!." So I'm toying with the idea that I may not be able to continue class until I get it resolved since it is obviously an issue. I'm supposed to practice lifts tonight, but I'm thinking I cannot grip the bar properly until the pain eases up. :-( I did buy some nice lifting gloves that help pad it a little, and some tape... we'll see what happens, next scheduled class isn't until the 24th.
Anyways... it's time to tend to my onions and get dinner finished. I also brought work home to do tonight, so gotta get after that as well.
I understand the thumb issues as that's where I am with my hip issues. My GOOD hip is sciatic-y today, so I am taking a rest day. No way I can put all my weight on one leg safely with weights. At least my food is in check, but right now I'm hungry.
I think I'm going to have to suck it up and schedule my follow up appointment with the doc. These issues have been going on for 6 months now and the only reason I haven't scheduled the follow up is that I don't like the idea of shots in my hip joint! There has to be some other treatment.
Your son wants some, you know it! I baked the chicken in the oven last night cuz I had too much to fit on my indoor grill... it was still YUMMY!
Cals yesterday: 1489 - 46/18/36
My thumb is trashed! I can barely bend it today, it's been killing me all night and it's throbbing! I am having trouble turning door knobs with that hand and I could barely grip my packet of splenda to tear the top off. Two of the attorneys I work for are leaving tomorrow for Japan for two weeks... LOTS to do today to make sure their calendars are clear of deadlines while they are gone. I'm going to work early and going to find an orthopedic doc who can take a look at it tomorrow (hopefully!) I did dig up my braces from when I fell on it two years ago and the wrist/thumb took a hit, one of them completely immmobilizes the thumb... it feels good on the thumb, but is really overkill with the brace all the way up my wrist and half way up my forearm. I think I'm going to try to tape it with athletic tape so that I can still type, and hit the store for some advil on the way to work.
Rest day for me... and likely a 12 hour work day! In a perfect world, I'd have had more notice that they were going before yesterday... but my office is far from perfect!
I went into the doc today for my hip and sacrum and tailbone issues. The news was not good. No exercise other than the PT I will doing and swimming - and I just cancelled my gym membership!
I'm pretty upset about it. Cried all the way home. No idea what I'm going to do now. Maybe WW as that's about all the calories a slug like me will need?
Oh no! Thats terrible. I have an appt first thing tomorrow a.m. with a hand surgeon. I've also been doing some research on the net and it looks like the first break probably involved a tendon, which has been compromised since then since it wasnt treated as a soft tissue injury. I'm pretty sure the tendon is toast.
I've been taking hydrocodone all day and it BARELY touches the pain, the swelling has increased, it's nice and red and it's hot and burning. It's toast! I'm sure surgery is the fix.
On the flip side, Ash has had an earache and went to her ear doc today and they need to do surgery to replace her tubes. My insurance has a 2500 deductible... PER PERSON!!!!!! so I'm pretty stressed about it all having used my bonus and taking a loan on my 401k to get vehicles running.

Ack! I hear you. Yet another reason to be upset about the PT. My insurance sucks this year - first time I have had a deductible. I imagine that will be run through quickly with PT 3x a week? And I get to tell my boss I have to be out 3x a week while our company is doing poorly financially and my peers are working on very important projects. Me, not so much. Ugh!
Hi there--finally catching up on your log and want to say welcome (belatedly) to the forum. I'm so sorry about your thumb problems...I would be really upset also if I were you. I hope you can figure out a plan that will help it improve. It's fun, though, having a sister in the challenge, isn't it?!
I am in a cast The doc has me on a strong anti-inflammatory and darvoeset for the pain. Its helping as my pain is much better today. I go back to the doc tuesday and the cast will come off (he just wanted to immobilize the thumb to prevent further irritation so it could begin healing) and he hopes the pain/swelling will be gone by then so that he can test the ligament to make sure there was no injury to the soft tissue.
It is fun ha ving a sister in the challenge... and since we are both injured, we can whine and complain to each other!!!!
Pasting from the daily thread (because I REALLY am that lame!)
Hi ladies! I have been mostly out/off plan here lately with the hand business. Went back for my follow up yesterday and my grip is still shot, but I've been encouraged by the doc to do whatever I can and utilize my lifting straps to "lighten the load" whenever possible. I'm planning on posting stats/pics that show no change for the first month... but HEY! This is a 6 mo. challenge and darnit! I'm not letting the next 6 months pass me by with NO PROGRESS! I'm going to take this weekend to sort out diet details, nail a definite plan, cook up some good eats, plan workouts, etc. etc. etc.
My daughter is scheduled for surgery to have the tubes in her ears replaced on Friday the 13th! The following Friday I go for the final follow up with the hand doc, and *if* all is well and it feels "normal" again, strength/grip has returned to 'mostly normal' then I can begin to consider surgery. Yes... you read that right, heal it, then consider about surgery! I broke it almost 20 yrs ago, and again about 3 yrs ago. There's a lump of calcium deposit in the crook of my thumb and index finger, and, in all honesty, I should have it removed, the sooner the better. The biggest part is whether the calcium deposit it embedded in the ligament or outside it. If outside, surgery and rehab should be a breeze, if it's embedded in the ligament, it'll be rougher, including 4-6 weeks in a full cast, with ligament from the inside of my wrist used to replace the ligaments in my thumb. With a $2500 per person, per year deductible on my health insurance... well, I really cant afford to do anything but sit home and tend to my diet/exercise/bodyfat goals!!!!
At any rate, I'm still in, and pledging minimal change for the 1st check in, but I'm not giving up!!!!
1st goal for this coming week is to keep up with this thread, the daily check in, as I cannot keep up with each journal at the moment.
Wishing everybody success and progress for this first month check in!
Deb
Good luck, and I'm really sorry about all your hand woes, not to mention the issues with your daughter. Good for you for not using all those things as (legitimate) excuses to give up. I wish you luck in the next few months!
Hey I'll come out of lurkdom to say howdy Deb! Bummer about the hand :-( but you know cardio doesn't require grip strength (sheeet did I really say that?). You look wonderful and happy.
