That place looks amazing. You'll have to get me the info on it! BF and I have been looking for fun new places to go. We're heading up to Strawberry Springs in April, which is a blast too, but wow on that cabin!

Thanks, everyone! It was really nice.
Still recovering, I think, because I've been dead tired ever since returning...although that might be because I forgot to pick up my Rx refill--thyroid meds. I'm on a very low dose, but it just dawned on me that that could be the reason I'm crashing early every night and having trouble getting up every morning. I haven't been to the gym yet. Meant to go this morning, but I never woke up . So...I can go today or squeeze in writing time, both of which are pretty essential for my sanity. I'll have to play it by ear.
Food was definitely better yesterday, tho. I cooked again! Here's the summary:
Total Calories: 1,979
Carbs: 235
Fat: 69
Protein: 79
Now, if I don't eat apple crisp for breakfast , maybe I'll actually get into the weight-loss zone. Although NROLFW suggests NOT trying to lose weight while lifting. Any thoughts?

It's more challenging than focusing on weight/fat loss alone... some people did NROLW and lost weight, but I was one who couldn't - my appetite was RAVENOUS on that program, because it's so intense. Recovery is important too, and food is part of that...
It took me years to learn that it's better to spend 1 month on fat loss then one month on strength than spin my wheels for two months of "I can lose weight while gaining strength". I still haven't 100% learned it, but that's why many say NROLW isn't good for weight/fat loss...
If you want fat loss oriented programs, I'd suggest Craig Ballantyne's Turbulence Training, or Leigh Peele's Fat Loss Troubleshoot. Like Bytsi said, you've got to have your nutrition spot on for NROL and NROL4W otherwise you'll be eating back any extra calories you may have burned off.

I lost fine (and gained strength, although probably due to newbie-ness) while doing NROLW but I've read many who did have trouble with it. Maybe give it a shot, tinker a bit, and see if it fits for you? There's, thankfully, no law against dumping programs if you find they're not working for you after a trial.
I have a friend, though, who visited, saw all the scantily-dressed females running/jogging/roller blading along the bike paths, and promptly decided that Boulder was the best place to live. (He was male .) If you want to get in shape, Boulder will either encourage you (because there are LOTS of things to do, LOTS of healthy food & exercise options, and LOTS of really fit people running around) or discourage you (mostly because everyone here is so much fitter than normal in our country).
Of course, the flip side is that I get to go from feeling slightly chubby to skinny whenever I travel .
You should see San Antonio--we wear our 3rd fattest city title proudly. I think we've been #1 a few times.

The few thin people still eat crappy and don't exercise, it just hasn't caught up to them yet.
I see that you said you live in the high desert because I was gonna say Orange County is all about the looks. I shake my head every time I go home to visit my parents. Of course, when I lived there in my 20s, I was caught up in that. Damn tanning salons.

Me too--I found that when I was tracking, I could lose, but when I wasn't, it was very easy to overeat. I think I did well on it because it was so different from anything I'd done in the past.

I'm one of the people who did lose weight on NROL4W, but it wasn't easy. I think you can make anything work for you as long as you can keep your food in check. Assuming you don't have a lot to lose, just cut 200 to 300 calories off your estimated maintenance and start there.
Although I haven't lost a lot of weight on NROLW, it has nothing to do with the program but my lack of consistency with my nutrition. I certainly don't find the workouts too intense...they are not nearly as intense as NROL's fat loss programs on which you are expected to lose weight. I don't feel extra hungry or extra tired after the workouts--I only feel rejuvenated. I definitely am expecting to see some weight loss now that I'm tracking better and being more compliant.

Aha...that makes sense. I definitely get hungry! Of course, I eat junk, too ; but when I'm really hungry, I want PROTEIN and water and veggies and fruit. I'm seldom *hungry* for that apple crisp. That's more *want*.

I'm happy with the NROL4W program, because I'm definitely building strength. My ultimate goal is to be more fit by summer so I have the muscles and energy to climb a 14-er...and generally do more fun stuff. I feel like I'm getting stronger, which is definitely the primary goal. I was worried that I was screwing up because I wasn't losing weight.
I'm adding those programs to my list, though. I can't see myself ever retreating from a regular fitness routine. It's made me feel so much better!

It was whole-grain, low-sugar, all-natural apple crisp, too.

What? Change?
The funny sidebar to all this is that I was worrying a bit more about weight due to a post-weekend high of 157. This morning, after eating a bit better for a few days, I was 153.4--a low for me. So maybe I am losing weight, after all! Mostly, I don't want to be gaining.
Thank you for all your input! It sounds like everyone responds differently to the program...geez, now that I say that, it seems awfully obvious.

Ha--that's me. When I stopped tracking, I noticed myself fudging more...adding a cookie here, an extra piece of chocolate there. When I'm taking time to track, it's easier to stay on track.
Now if I could only do some kind of exercise that would let me go on less sleep, I'd be golden!

Define "a lot"?
I'm even more of a wimp than that. My estimated maintenance is 1,560 - 1,910 calories. I'm trying to hit around 1800 while still listening to my body. If I don't eat something nutritious when I'm hungry, I tend to feel sick. Then I move less, use fewer calories, and when I do eat I overindulge because I feel so yucky.
I think those numbers work for me...it's when I'm holding steady at 2100 calories that I start gaining instead of losing!!

That's me...I haven't been super consistent. But hey, I'm making overall forward progress....
...and I realized that I didn't post exercise/nutrition info for yesterday.
I still didn't make it to the gym--too much going on this week--but I took a speedy walk and jumped rope for 5 minutes. Did you know that you burn more calories doing 5 min of jump rope than 15 minutes walking? That cracked me up. Plus, I'm tickled because I can jump 100x without messing up now. I don't think I could EVER do that as a kid .
...which was really encouraging to learn, because I thought I'd blown it when I succumbed to two Samoas at rehearsal that night. I swear, Girl Scout cookie season should be listed on the calendars of all fitness web sites, with big DANGER!!! signs .

You inspired me to bring my jump rope to the gym tonight. I used it for part of my warmup. I didn't count in the beginning, then I tried to do 100 but I messed up halfway through. Then the more tired I got, the more I kept messing up. LOL. But it definitely warmed me up and I'll be interested to see my calorie burn for that brief portion of my workout. On top of that, my bladder has been iffy this week, so I was paying close attention to that issue as well. But jumping rope was fun, even if I kind of suck at it.

I'm the same way Cheryl--I am athletic for the first time in my life. It feels goood. : )
Isn't it cool? When I was a kid, I just thought that some kids were natural athletes and some of us...weren't. It turns out that I just had to find exercise that I enjoyed! I LOVE feeling strong. I have muscle definition on my back now! Not so much other places yet...I think the back is showing up because there wasn't any fat or flab disguising the muscles. Now I'm trying to get my arm muscles visible .

Yay! Someone else is jumping rope with me! (Long distance, but still .)
I started because my son did this introductory program with Skip-Its and wanted to teach me the tricks. I'm no good at the tricks, but I hung the jump rope up on the back door and will go jump a few minutes while I heat a cup of coffee or whatever. I couldn't ever jump more than a few in a row until a few days ago. It was weird...all of a sudden, I was jumping without messing up! I guess something clicked in that little brain o'mine. I'm even more motivated now that I know how many calories it burns! I think squeezing in a few minutes here and there during the day--which I can do even when I'm crazy-busy, like this week--will help me stay on track.
Yay! I'm back on track! Lots of healthy food, too. For lunch I made a sandwich using whole-wheat pita bread, hummus, cooked spinach with garlic, and a little bit of goat cheese. Mmmm....
YAY about finding that you love being strong and athletic. It's sad that it takes some of us so long to find our inner athlete - but then again, so many people never find him/her, so I guess it's wonderful that we discover it at all!

Great idea! Hmm...I've been thinking of ways to bump up my movement during my sedentary work day. I was thinking of running during lunch, but then I'd have to deal with the sweaty, dripping makeup and pits before I put my work clothes back on. Maybe jumping rope for brief periods of time out in the parking lot will rev up my burn a bit without heating me up to the point of dripping actual sweat. Hmmm...

I thought I was doing better, but someone (DH) set a big plate of warm brownies on the coffee table in front of me while we were watching a movie. I resisted a long time...then decided i could have one...and even that would have been okay. The problem came when I decided to clean up the plate .
Oh, well. No gym again--I should just go in the morning, because that's when I have the best energy for it (before kids/life/home overwhelm me). I did do a bit more jumping rope and took a nice long walk this afternoon. TOMORROW!!!

OMG, why would he do a thing like that? I would not have been able to resist. Lucky for me there is no chance in hell my bf would ever be caught baking brownies!
My H came home today (which is trying to be a low-cal day for me) with FOUR boxes of girl scout cookies. (Ok, it's not a dozen, but still...). I put them away in a cabinet so I could try to pretend they don't exist. Every time I walk near the kitchen, I see them back on the table, open, sitting there... damn kids and damn H!!!!
Oh, and you haven't tasted her husband's brownies...he mixes brown sugar with the batter in the bowl and makes a scrumptious topping that he drizzles all over them... no wonder you couldn't resist!
