New Zealand sounds truly wonderful right about now... sunny and summery!

I'm open to any and all Edinburgh advice you can lend. In exchange, I promise to spoil you rotten when you come to London.

I went to spin class tonight, as it's a cardio day, went out for drinks that evolved into pizza. I think I broke even. I'll piece together the wreckage tomorrow.

The wreckage- 2370 cals. This may be an overestimate, as I used the individual pizza nutritional info on the tracking site and what I hasn't pizza hut - heavy. I also only ate half of it, which probably was about two slices of normal pizza. regardless, I can't take it back. Oh, and i drank too much. Damn.

Fat - 21.0% (57 grams)
Protein - 20.5% (125 grams)
Carbohydrates - 37.2% (227 grams)
Alcohol - 21.3% (74 grams)
Other - 0.0%

Good news is that it looks like I pretty much broke even, thanks to the spinning class. I think I may just plan my nights out around it. Unfortunately, the gym at work is closed on the weekend, when I really need someone to take the food out of my hand and shove me into the gym.

One more thing to share:

Isn't this pretty? I had to take a picture.

Projections of Picasso paintings are being projected on to the National Gallery to promote an exhibit here.

Boy, that picture is gorgeous. Thanks for posting it.

Snif. I miss Europe. I did marry a Greek, but he was born in North America (although he definitely doesn't act like an american.) Are you American, Franc? I know your hubby is British, I assume that's why you're in London....

Thank you for your very sweet compliment .

I am American, and my husband and my job are what have me here in London. (He and I met while working together in New York).
Is much of your husband's family back in Greece? Greece is one of my favorite places. The food... the weather... so much wonderful! I had hoped to go this summer, but the FX rates are such that it's *so* pricey.

When we drove into Kalamata 2 years ago, we stopped at a little store, and there was one of those little old ladies with the scarf over her head, all in black, sitting out in front of the store like a picture from a travel magazine. Peter asked for directions, and found out that she was a relative. He's got probably 10 aunts and uncles there, and another 10 or so around the states. The orthodox rival the catholics on the procreation thing.

We've only been there twice, once before we had kids, and then two years ago. I wish it wasn't so expensive--in '92 when we went we lived like kings, not so much when we went back.

Wow! That's crazy! I've been once, and unfortunately, it was a rather short trip. A Greek friend of mine got married at a monastery right outside of Athens. After the wedding, I went to Hydra overnight. I really would love to travel around the mainland and the islands more, but that won't be happening until the FX rates improve.

You are so lucky you got to move to London for work. I spend a week there a year ago and it was amazing. Such a huge city with so much life to it!! I actually liked the cold, the random rainstorms, the food, and the beer mmmmmmm.

Awesome picture!

I lived in Luxembourg when I was a kid! We did a lot of traveling. Too bad I was too young to appreciate it, though.

5 & 6 March: I am totally in hungry caterpillar mode.

Fifth:

Eats: 2152 cals. Not a deficit
Fat - 22.4% (55 grams)
Protein - 23.5% (130 grams)
Carbohydrates - 47.2% (262 grams)
Alcohol - 6.9% (22 grams)
Other - 0.0%
Workout: Spin class, 45min

Sixth:

Eats:
2086 - a deficit of 200cal or so

Workout: Started Stage 5!

I took it a bit easy today. I did 3 reps on everything.
My It band has really been bothering me today. Good news is that I see the specialist on Monday and will be back at physio soonthereafter. My overhead squat weights are especially low... my form was really suffering because of the tightness in my leg, so I decided to just focus on form and not on mass.

It's the weekend, whee! It's the worst time of the week for my diet, but gosh it's nice to not trek to work.

Must go run around and finish stuffs tonight - looking forward to reading and replying to posts tomorrow (while I'm trying to not graze my way through the kitchen!)

I forgot about that part. It DOES suck. It's one of those things that depite being painful gets better the more you do it.

I've also got an English husband, which is handy. I really like it here too. I expected the weather would be a drawback, but it really isn't. While it is overcast more often, the weather is never extreme. It's rarely so cold or so hot out that it's uncomfortable, for example. As a result, I think I actually get more sunlight then I did in the bitter NYC winters. People say the food is bad, but I think that's because restaurants are pricier here and what you get for $20 in Piccadilly square generally does suck.

Should you ever make it back over here, I'll take you out for a pint. In the meantime, I'll keep posting pictures to lure you.

Thanks! I'm working on it. I'm actually taking a class. Shooting at night was really fun, and I can't wait to do it again. Next time, I'm going to leave my husband home, as when I was taking that one, he was more than ready to go. heh.
I haven't been to Luxembourg yet. How old were you? Have you been back?
It's on my list... along with most of the rest of the globe. I think that may be the best part of having the chance to live here - a three hour train ride from NYC meant Boston, a three hour train ride from here means Paris.

It's been ages since I've been to Edinburgh, but we did the usual things. The castle is definitely worth a visit. I also remember went to the Weaver's Cottage (the looms are amazing). It's very much a walking city, which is nice. It's just a case of walking around at lot, which at the time I didn't really appreciate. You can also do pub tours, which we didn't do, but sound kind of interesting.

For three self-guided walking tours, try these:

http://www.edinburgh-tattoo.co.uk/edinburgh/index.html

Typical of Edinburgh, walks 1 and 2 are fairly suitable for wet days.

6th and 7th: recap

Saturday, 7 March:

Eats:
2583 cals. Not good, but not a total trainwreck
Fat - 31.0% (89 grams)
Protein - 15.8% (102 grams)
Carbohydrates - 38.1% (246 grams)
Alcohol - 10.2% (38 grams)
Other - 5.0%

Workout:
30 min aerobics with the Wii my fitness coach and an hour long beginners pilates class

Sunday, 8 March:
here's where I undo a whole lot of hard work, AGAIN
What the hell is wrong with me? It's not like I binge... I just graze all day and then go out to eat. I need to stay the hell out of the kitchen. It's embarassing and stupid that I can manage to be on good behavior except EVERY weekend.
I need to find a way to ensure I don't do this. That's my goal for this week... to come up with a few ways that I can not be such a mess every single weekend.

I'm ashamed to post this... same story every week. Ah well.

Eats:3267 cals. This involved 2 cadbury cream eggs.
Fat - 32.0% (116 grams)
Protein - 10.8% (89 grams)
Carbohydrates - 31.5% (258 grams)
Alcohol - 15.9% (74 grams)
Other - 9.7%

Workout: none. I had my hair straightened (an annual ritual) and i can't get it wet until Tuesday night at earliest.

9 March:

Eats:
1699 cals - 300cal deficit
Fat - 25.7% (49 grams)
Protein - 25.7% (109 grams)
Carbohydrates - 44.3% (188 grams)
Alcohol - 3.0% (7 grams)
Other - 1.2%

Workout: none. my fried hair is still not allowed to get wet

I went to the orthopedist today, and he has observed an asymmetry in how i move on my left v how i do on the right. he thinks that this is causing my IT band pain, so more Physio lies ahead... after an MRI on Thursday. I guess it's good news, as it means progress.
Also in good news - he says i can still work out, but that I should be careful on anything that feels painful or strange.

My brother arrives Friday, and I'm really going to try to make sure I don't go totally AWOL while he's here. He's going to be jetlagged, which means I'll be able to easily workout in the mornings, and to be fair, he's not the sort to not encourage me to workout. I am going to try to be a good girl, allowing for planned splurges when we go out.
Gosh, I make that sound easy and goodness knows, it's going to be quite hard! I need to make a more detailed plan.

My brother will arrive bearing my new toy: A forerunner 305. I got it on Ebay for a really good deal. yay! I'm looking forward to testing it while he sleeps in!

Thanks so much for the excellent advice, Anne! I really glad to hear it's a walking city, as that makes managing the eating a whole lot easier! Did you visit the underground city?

Catching up:

Protein powder + oatmeal = EW! Tried it, along with a million other ideas posted here and hated most all of them. Of course, it doesn't help that I'll only use the unsweetened, unflavored stuff. The only thing I use it for now is to mix in my salads.

Congrats on the new gadget and the bro visit!!

No clue on the self-destructing weekends. Maybe handcuff yourself to the sofa? Buy some fake vomit smell and use it liberally as perfume on the weekends? I'd think that would tend to make eating less enjoyable. Hmm. I should market that as the next great diet aid.

I so envy you globetrotting superstars! My extended family and their fancy-pants bank accounts, it seems I hear about some of them flying off to exciting places every other week. (Okay, it's not really that often but it can seem like it to poor liitle me. ) I've got some extended family in Ireland and Scotland. I should get to know them and lay suck up, then I'd just have to pay airfare.

Egads, I meant play suck up. Incest is only best in Arkansas and I'm a full 30 miles or so from that border.

Ah. protein powder and oatmeal are not to be repeated! It does sort of work in yogurt, though!
I may pass on the eau du barf plan, much as I appreciate the idea. heh heh. I was the girl who just gnawed the pepper flavored polish that her nan made her wear to end nail chewing. I just love eating, and to be fair, it wouldn't be such a big deal if i weren't in the midst of trying to achieve another goal!
As for globetrotting, staying with people is a big way I've managed to afford a lot of the travel I've done. You get yourself to London, and I'll put you up, no problem. You can punch me in the head when I start grazing on cheese on Sunday.

Wait... you mix it into SALAD? How??

I use an olive oil & vinegar dressing which mixes nicely with the powder with a vigorous stirring. Turns it into a Caesar-like dressing. Sounds gross but I swear it's really good!

I'll keep your offer in mind should I ever ditch the kids for an international romp. And, of course, should you ever get the urge to visit the Land of Rednecks (dental hygiene optional), just holler. You'll be happy to know we now have running water.

10 March:

Today could have been a mess, but it wasn't really. I worked at home, which can mean a weekend eating episode, but today, I did OK.

I think i might install some of that invisible fencing around my fridge such that when i go near it, the shock collar will kick in and ZAP.

Eats: 2114 Cals. No deficit but given that I did go to the gym and working at home tends to be a more active day, I'd like to think I broke even. Days at home tend to be more active because I putter a lot more while on conference calls. In fact, I cleaned my apartment today while on calls. I also folded 4 loads of laundry.

Fat - 30.5% (72 grams)
Protein - 26.4% (140 grams)
Carbohydrates - 43.1% (228 grams)
Alcohol - 0.0%

Workout:
I'm a bit reluctant to get my plastic hair wet, so I took it easy. I can wet it after 48hours, but I don't know if they meant 48 hours literally or 2 days later.
Anyway, I did upper body weights... rows, presses, and some cable work with a bit of cardio at the end.
I'll do NROLFW 5B for the first time on Thursday.

In terms of ways I'm going to stay on track on the weekend and while my brother is visiting, i've thought on the following things I'm going to do.
Sadly, this will not include the shock collar, entertaining as that might be.

1. I will stick to my usual weekday breakfast of cereal and milk/ yogurt each day. Special weekend breakfast seems to kick off my downward spiral.
2. I will workout in the morning while my brother sleeps in. If i push it off until later, it will likely get cancelled when my husband and brother want me to go do something else.
3. Each serving of consumed will be accompanied by a pint of water. Sure I can party. I just might be a candidate for a catheter too.
4. Foods that I can't eat just one of should be skipped entirely. This means no tea cakes.

(this list is to be continued!)

I'll keep your offer in mind should I ever ditch the kids for an international romp. And, of course, should you ever get the urge to visit the Land of Rednecks (dental hygiene optional), just holler. You'll be happy to know we now have running water.
I'll try it and report back!

Definitely do keep my offer in mind. I can assure you that if I find myself in OK, I'll be begging to visit. Oh the adventures ahead!

I moved there when I was 7 and moved back to the states when I was 12. I've been everywhere except for Scotland, Wales, Scandinavia, and Portugal. When we were in Italy, we got to meet some relatives. My mom's dad was a twin. Her father immigrated to the states and his twin stayed in Italy. So that was fun to meet them. We moved back in 1978 and I haven't been back since, although my parents have several times.

11 March:

Eats: I was so good today. 1726 Cals!
Fat - 17.9% (35 grams)
Protein - 28.2% (125 grams)
Carbohydrates - 46.5% (207 grams)
Alcohol - 7.5% (19 grams)
Other - 0.0%

Workout: None, I had class tonight. So, i just had my big walk to the train and then home.
This was the first time in a while that the weather has been kind of nice for the trek.

I have my MRI tomorrow. I just hope whatever is wrong will not put my on the couch, as to say I'm a miserable creature when I can't exercise would be a serious understatement. I'll find out Friday when I go back to orthopedics. Fingers crossed.

On to the fun stuff..

I'm a bit jealous. It's too bad you were so young then, but at least you were old enough to remember it. Did you pick up any languages?

Time to master cheaper travel; although travelling with your entire gang might be a bit of an endeavor.
I'm currently obsessed with the idea of houseswapping, and I've been researching it. I will report back with useful findings!

Work just called to suck me in. Fleh.

LOL--the funny thing is that I HATE traveling now. I hate packing and dealing with airports, etc.

I took French for 5 years and can probably swear more than put actual sentences together. I went to an American school so 95% of my friends were Americans (Goodyear and DuPont have plants in Lux). Plus, most people spoke English, so I never really had to learn it.

12 March:
My brother arrives tomorrow, kicking off a week celebrating deep fried food and beer. It'll be fun, I've just got to stick to my damage control agenda, which I've expanded....

5. My brother is generally a OK food sharer. I will mooch a bite of his deep fried pizza/ mars bar/ other scottish item rather than have my own each time.
6. Also, he is a big boy and does not need my participation to clog his arteries. Thus, I will keep this in mind and try to not crumble for non existent peer pressure- rather, I will save myself for when I am truly challenged to throw down.
7. Lots of walking

Eats:
1775 cals - good deficit
Fat - 24.2% (48 grams)
Protein - 28.4% (126 grams)
Carbohydrates - 37.9% (168 grams)
Alcohol - 8.3% (21 grams)
Other - 1.2%

Workout: Skipped.
Maybe I'm being a big wuss here, but I had my MRI today and I go back to the the Sports Medicine doc tomorrow. While he did say I could work out, I'm not feeling great, and given that I'll have a better sense of what's wrong and what my capacity is tomorrow, it just seems sensible to wait.
So there's that, and the fact that I'd need to cram in a few hundred extra calories to go lift. The cram part I like, but the time I've digested it enough to work out, the gym will be closed.
So, instead, I'm getting all my crap together for the IRS. Yuck.

The process is worth going somewhere new, but I do know what you mean. You'd have to drug me to get me to fly at the holidays. It's like amateur day at the metal detector.

The last time I did, I was moving my cat to Florida to stay with my brother because the kitty would not be cleared for quarantine-free entry into the UK until May 08.

I got to the metal detector area and proceeded to
put my coat, belt, scarf, and shoes in the bin and into the scanner
Take my laptop out, put it into its very own bin, and into the scanner
Take out and insert my bag o' liquids and my backpack into a bin and into the scanner
Take the cat out of his travel bag and chuck his bag into the scanner.

This is where the fun really started...

This is the point at which one of the guys with the scanner wands points and says, "That's a really big cat!" to which I politely smile. 2 people want to pet him, he's digging his claws into my shoulder, someone's little dog is yapping at me, and I have 2 people ahead of me to walk through the detector, one of whom has to be scanned multiple times due to his belt, pocket change, metal cranial plate to deflect the alien contacts....

Metal gussets on my trousers set off the alarm, so I (with a cat stuck to me like a barnacle) get the wand, as all my stuff is pouring out of the scanner.

Out comes the coat/scarf/belt/shoes
the laptop
the liquids
the backpack
but where is the cat bag? it's in the machine being extra checked, of course!!

So, my stuff is all over the place, the dog is still yapping, people are staring at my HUGE cat, and I can't really stop my stuff's journey down into the chaos that is the xray machine collection area because my hands are full of 16lbs worth of housecat (I did say he was big).

Finally the bag comes out, and I shove poor kitty in there, collect my liquids, backpack, and laptop, get dressed again, and go to the gate.

While I realize that people with children have a far greater challenge, this experience did give me a bit of a clue.

13 march: part 1

Good news - I went to the doc, reviewed my MRI, and I have bursitis! This is great news, as it just means physio, maybe a shot, and I can keep exercising all I want. Yippee!

Seeing my MRI was a bit shocking too. I got to see what 32% body fat (as of this morning's scale hop) looks like.
I have some seriously scrawny thighs underneath this pudge!

I have a friend who is a plastic surgeon, and one time he mentioned that in surgery it's a bit amazing to see that there's a surprisingly tiny person inside of some very large people. He was right. I'm not even big when you consider only my height and weight, but that layer of insulation was pretty shocking to see.

Anyway, I was sent off for more physio, given an appointment in four weeks, and given the infamous disk. Perhaps I'll show anyone who says I'm crazy to be trying to change my shape a cross section of my thigh now. Or, maybe I'll just keep that picture in my mind and think about how much bigger the muscles will be and how much less pudge I'll have if I just keep working at it and get that weekend snack shock collar.

13 March- part II

Eats: 1747 cals. Not enough protein, but I did well calorie-wise

I even said NO to dessert! Even when my husband was like, "you've got to try a bit..." I said I was too full and would maybe have some later. To be fair, I was full and knew I wouldn't properly enjoy my dessert, but normally, I just cave in.

Go me!!

Fat - 26.9% (55 grams)
Protein - 18.2% (83 grams)
Carbohydrates - 45.8% (210 grams)
Alcohol - 9.1% (24 grams)
Other - 0.0%

Workout: None. Now that I have a green light to work out, I'm back to the gym tomorrow.
