Default From Flab of Steel to Abs of Steel

Okay, let's try this again. I had my post all typed and ready to go and then the forum logged me out.

I know that's a corny title, but it's a homage to Tamilee Webb.

I was really inspired by jenofthemountain's OPT thread and am now on Day 2 of the program.

I've been a long time lurker and started NROLW back in January, when I was approached by a CrossFit trainer to try that way of fitness and have never looked back.

My name is Shelly and I'll be 43 on Sunday. Long story short, I lost 30 pounds on WW when I was 21 and got down to a size 3-5 (probably a zero in today's vanity sizing...lol). Kept that off for well over 10 years including 2 pregnancies. Fast forward another 10 years and I'm pretty much where I was when I was 21, only way more fit.

Since we're not going 'home' (all my family is in CA), I decided now is as good as of time as any to get the weight off. That, and the fact that I have a Dr. appointment in February and I'd really like that scale to say something different for once!!!

So...this journal is to keep me in check and I hope y'all will too.

So...

I figured my starting calories to be 1500 and will adjust accordingly as needed.

I came in at 1518, Fat 54g, Protein 123g, Carbs 128. What I should have eaten was 42, 150, 131. Not too bad as I know I'm not going to get them spot on.

Workout was supposed to be 3 rounds/time of run 400m, 10 burpees. If you've never done a burpee before, they effing suck. And if you've done burpees before, you definitely know how much they effing suck! However, the remodeled my gym and the new carpet fumes were getting to me and my partner, so we headed outside to the park behind my gym. We just ran in a soccer field and ended up with about 2 inches of mud on our shoes. I didn't end up doing the burpees because my shoes kept sliding. Darn!

Day 2

Calories 1452. 173g of Carbs, 112 g protein, 46g of fat. I wish my protein was higher. Oh, well.

Today's WOD was a hard one.

50 pull-ups (assisted pull-up machine - I can't do a real one yet)
Run 400m
21 Thrusters 55#
Run 800m
21 Thrusters db 15# each arm
Run 400m
50 pull-ups (body weight rows on the smith machine)

We had to sub the elliptical for the runs as the dreadmills were taken. On the second round of thrusters, I had to sub dumbbell ones because of someone using the squat bar. I only used 15# each because heavier weights on db thrusters bother my shoulder and elbow for some reason.

Onward!

I am very sore and wiped out today. My training partner and I have been taking Wednesday's off, so today was supposed to be a rest day. I decided to go for a 'hood walk with my friend to catch up with her. By the time we got to the point where we split up to go to our homes, my legs were so stiff that I had to stop and stretch a few times.

Today's calories came in at 1449 -- 135g carbs, 41g fat, and 135g protein. I'm trying my hardest to meet the macros. I'm spot on with the carbs and fat, but about 15g under in protein. Protein has been my hardest goal to meet.

I did have protein pancakes for dinner! My kids thought I was nuts, but I informed them that it's perfectly acceptable to have pancakes for dinner!

I look forward to catching up on other's journals...just haven't had time to sit down and start reading them.

Time for Top Chef!

I'm not sure where I ended up calorie wise. It was hard to figure out my dinner, but I 'guesstimated' as best as I could. I may be a little under or a little over, but I had around 600 calories to spare for dinner so I think I'm okay. Still falling short of protein, though.

My workout partner blew me off this morning ... which is probably a good thing because she would probably make me do some running. I hate to run, but do it. I'm just not very good at it.

With CrossFit it's very easy to do workouts at home, so I did a variation of a workout called Annie. Annie is supposed to be 50-40-30-20-10 of double unders (the jump rope is supposed pass twice before your feet hit the ground - um, sure...) and sit ups. Instead I just did regular jump roping and dumbbell swings. It was short but killer. I used 20#, but normally I use 30-35 pounds when at the gym. I have those Selec-Tech weights and it's kinda hard to grip when swinging them. I need to get that 1 pood kettlebell I've been eyeing at Dick's.

It's been chilly here in South Texas! I don't think we're supposed to get out of the 40s tomorrow! Yay! I have cute jackets and sweaters to wear!

Thanks for the welcome, everyone! I'm looking forward to the challenge. I think it's just what I need to keep motivated. Especially, the pictures as I may not see the changes, but others (hopefully!) will.

Jen, I hope you like the protein shake as much as I do! lol

I'm still doing well with OPT. Tomorrow will be my official weigh in. I've done some weigh ins in between and the scale has gone back down to where it normally hovers. I was bad and had a few Hershey kisses yesterday...okay, more than a few However, I noticed some recently purchased pants that were starting to get snug were fitting better, so I know something is working!

Yesterday, we worked on push jerks. I don't think we've ever really done them before. It's one of those exercises, like hang cleans, that I can do if I don't think about it. If I think about the movements, I screw them up.

We did 5-5-5-5-5. The 1st set of 5 was with the 45 pound bar. I did those with no problem. 2nd set at 55#, a little wobbly, but not bad. 3rd set at 55#, did well. 4th set was 65# was pretty much failure. I think I got two of them done properly. I dropped down to 60# on the last set. By then, my arms were tired, so it was just eh. I probably should have gone up in 5# increments instead of 10. As I go heavier (and the same with shoulder presses and push presses), I tend to arch my back. I also have a lot of flexibility in my shoulders and elbows and sometimes I throw my arms too far back when pushing up. Luckily, my partner is able to spot when I do and I can adjust.

We did a short WOD afterwards. 5 rounds/time of 10 walking lunges and 15 db swings. I used 25# each arm for the lunges and 30# for the swings. I finished in 5:33. My partner finished a few minutes behind me and I think either I only did four rounds or she did 6. She insisted we both did 5. I think one of us counted wrong as she usually smokes me in the WODs!

We do CrossFit. They post their WODs daily for free on their website, although we don't follow it that much. There are lots of CF affiliates all over the country. I don't belong to one because they usually charge $150 a month, but all the affiliates post their workouts on their blogs for free. We mostly get our workouts from a local affiliate's blog because he throws a lot of strength training in. Basically, it's a lot of body weight exercise with some OLY lifting thrown in. You get your strength and cardio all in one shot! You don't rest between rounds so it's very intense, but easily scalable and a lot can be done at home if you don't belong to a gym or can't get to one. I've been doing it since January and it's the only program I haven't been bored with because it's always different.

So, for my first week on OPT, I'm down 3.6 pounds! I'm happy, but not overly excited as I had gained a few pounds over Thanksgiving and had Aunt Flo visiting. Since I'm going to do the challenge, I'll post my stats then.

Congrats on the weight loss. I will be interested to see how OPT diet fits with Crossfit. Since Leigh designed the food around the lifting/exercise, I will be curious to see how it works for you.

Thanks, Karen! I got that shot on the 2nd picture I took! That hat was way too big for her and it kept falling off!

Jen--The diehards follow the Zone or Paleo (sp?) diet, so I think it should work well with it. Zone is 30-30-40? Sot the increments aren't too drastically different. Although, I still have trouble hitting the protein. I'm usually under by 20-25 g

You know how they say getting a good night's sleep helps with weight loss? Did they take into account that people might share a bed with someone who SNORES and thus makes it impossible to not wake up a gazillion times to kick said snorer? It's all my husbands fault I don't lose weight!!! I think he may find that snore stopper thing that's always advertised on TV in his stocking -- lol. He says I snore too, but I know he's lying

I've been meaning to post this and keep forgetting, but the Kashi frozen meals are really good and pretty high in protein. I've tried the Southwest Style Chicken and the Lemon Rosemary Chicken and both are very tasty. I haven't tried the pizza's yet, but they look pretty good also.

Today's workout was as many rounds in 20 minutes of:

15 pull-ups (i do bodyweight rows as I can't do a pull up ... YET)
15 back extensions
15 sit ups
15 push ups

I did 7 rounds. And every time I did a push up, I got a lovely whiff of that new carpet smell. Blech.

I better hit the hay early tonight so I can get at least a few hours of sleep before the snoreathon starts. And I will pray that Vicki from The Biggest Loser is below the yellow line tomorrow so I can vote her ass out!

LOL, how could your husband know that you snore when he's not being kept awake by it, right ?

We must be married to the same guy!!! My youngest had a bad dream the other night and I was too tired to take him back to bed so I just had him crawl in with us. In the morning he asked if I ever get any sleep with the way daddy snores all night? He said it was awful trying to fall asleep! Dh had a custom-made mouth piece made that has made a world of difference. (how may times can you use the word "made" in a sentence ) He still snores but softly now.

I checked out crossfit.com after reading your log. I really want to try to incorporate some of that type of training into my routine. I'm hoping to convince my nephew tomorrow to do it with me. (we do cardio together 2x/wk). So anyway, thanks for the idea!!!

It's weird because sometimes I don't even hear him and other times it's pure torture! I've gone to sleep in the guest bedroom at times, but that has my old bed in it and there's a reason I got rid of it!

Just remember to scale if needed. A lot of the workouts look easier on paper than they really are (as in my partner and I are all, "This won't be bad" when we start to, "OMG, that workout sucked!"). I just like to having other options to get a cardio workout besides the dreadmill!

hi and welcome to the challenge! I like your crossfit workouts, tough but doable if you set your mind to it. It must be great having a workout buddy to egg you on too.
I loved the skipping workout you did, think I might try that when I know I have the house to myself, for fear my sons would think it was hilarious and my coordination isnt so hot.

Yeah...I'm so glad to have a workout partner. It makes me get my butt to the gym even when I don't want to, but I end up being glad I did.

I've gotten better at jump roping. It's amazing what was so easy as a child is harder as an adult! I started off only being able to do just the skip, but now can do it normally for about a minute without stopping.

Today we worked on squats.

Overhead squats
3x55
3x65
3x65

Back Squats
3x105
3x115
3x125 PR

Front Squats
3x105
3x110
3x115 PR that was pushing it though

Then I just walked on the treadmill for about 10 minutes.

Now I get to go do the office workout, which is filing all the paper I've piled everywhere *sigh*. I swear, my paper procreates while I sleep.

My partner sells Nutrilite products and gave me a RTD protein drink to try. I'm kind of afraid to tryit because I have it in my mind that it's gonna taste horrible.

OMG, Nutrilite makes a great protein bar! Like a chocolate fudge that I used to nuke in the microwave for a bit and it tasted like a brownie. Wow, forgot all about those!

How funny! She gave me that one to sample yesterday too. It is very good. Probably the best one I've had so far. I'm still too scared to try the drink, though! lol

Hi - just checking out your log and subscribing!

BTW - my H snores too... if he falls asleep first (which he usually does) I have to kick and nudge and grunt at him until he wakes enough to give me time to doze off... sigh...

Howdy, ladies! Thanks for stopping by!

It's nice to see we all have something in common...fitness and husbands snoring loudly! lol Even my dog snores! However, I am pleased to inform y'all that I didn't hear him last night aaaaaaaaaaaaannnnd I'm sure I just jinxed myself for tonight.

I'm really trying to hit my protein macro today. I think I just might for once.

I was just watching the weather. They said hour high today was 85*. I don't think it was quite that hot, but probably upper 70s and muggy. We had a cold front just blow through and they're predicting possible sleet up in the hill country and maybe some flurries here by dawn. WTF? Gotta love south Texas weather.
