I'm doing mechanical engineering trying to make the jump from quality (which I'm throughly sick of, but good at) to the manufacturing side. I believe Karen is doing graphics arts (new media I think), but she can confirm that.
Good luck with the challenge Karen. We are at the exact same starting point in terms of height, weight and measurements. Let's be sure to push each other (okay, you push me because I'm a slacker compared to you). Belated congrats on winning the challenge. Your progress was amazing!
Excellent progress last year!! You are gonna Kick ass this year!!

Karen, you had a fantastic year--amazing job! Nice to see you staying in the challenge. Do you start school again this semester? (I can't remember what you said in the fall .)

thanks, karen! i start classes on monday - 15 hours this semester. and anne nailed it, i'm doing the new media program at the university of maine. i've actually got a ba in english with a secondary teacher certification and a ms ed, but i really never wanted to teach - i really enjoyed the instructional technology aspect. but i earned my master's in 1988 and a lot has changed with technology. new media is exciting since it rolls all of that instructional technology in with graphic arts and story telling and about a dozen other things. my kids are older now - youngest is nearly 12, and i just want to get out and have a fun career. my hubby keeps joking that he's going to retire once i have my degree...

thanks, donna! good to know we have similar stats and goals - and there won't be any slacking in this challenge, girl!!

thanks, i did lyle mcdonald's rapid fat loss plan which is actually a protein sparing modified fast. it's brutal, but effective. i figure i'll stay with it for another twelve weeks, take a free week and then start leigh peele's opt which is similar, but much more reasonable. i actually started my fat loss journey in sept 06 and have shed more than 125 pounds. it's been a loooong process, so i really don't mind suffering for a few short months!!

Seems we have a bit in common. I got my degree in English and history and then when on to get a library science degree with a minor in instructional design. I thought I'd teach and/or be a school librarian. Instead, I spent several years doing web design for a corporate training group, did a bit of technical course development and training, and am now an IT project manager, but I am thinking of taking classes this semester in the instructional design and library science departments geared towards information architecture and graphic design. Eventually, I will decide what I want to be when I grow up. I always thought I wanted to teach, but things just haven't grown in that direction. I like what I do now but am craving something a bit more creative!

Wow! Good for you! I have a hard time with reduced carbs. I know I do. I doubt I'd survive Lyle given how much I'm struggling with 35/40/25. I find I can manage 40/40/20 or 40/30/30 much better!
Okay, I'm officially jealous of you two school girls. I want to become a professional student, learn everything, and then, of course, take over the world.
Karen, you kick butt for staying in for the long haul. Lots of folks can do what it takes to lose some weight and get "fit" for a few weeks at a time but you've kept it up for years now. Excellent!
Hi Karen, a little late on this but I wanted to say congrats again for the last challenge! You have made some amazing progress!
And congrats on going back to school to do something you will find fulfilling. I have lots of friends who are at a point where they are wondering if what they are doing is what they want to be doing....I guess I have had those thoughts too!
Is new media a kind of design based program like graphic design or web design? I have some friends who are graphic designers and its something I have always been interested in.

When Cheryl was here I found a notebook in which my 6yo had written a plan to "tak ovr the wurld". I forget the whole thing, but here's the gist...
Let out all the evull into the world.
Throw a bomb into the p-lees station.
Something about fire and giants. It had like 7 points.

Nice job, Karen! I also saw that you are planning on attending the Summit! I am hoping to be there, too and it makes me smile to think of getting to meet you in person!

I didn't realize you had lost so much weight. Congratulations that's quite an accomplishment. Someday I hope to be saying something similiar.
I've been intrigued by Lyle's plan but I'm not sure if I could stick to it and even he flat out told me it would be a bad idea for me due to the continuous insulin infusion. So I guess it's moderate/slow and steady for me. Got to admit I'm jealous though. I'm glad it's working for you.
I know you said you would be away most of the day... so I do hope that your first day of school went well. Mine is (since it's second semester for me) rather normal, if not boring today. Hope that yours was more exciting!

now i know why college is for the young - it has been quite a week! i'm taking fifteen credit hours which boil down to one lecture class, two art studio classes and two computer lab classes. so glad this was a long weekend as i was majorly blasted with homework - cut and paste art projects, programming problems, nitpicky adobe illustrator pen tool exercises, artistic self-portrait photography, etc, etc!
and on top off all that, i started lifting again this week! the rec center is amazing, but i've been hobbling from class to class - so not fun in these subzero temps!! but i had been really missing the weights. not sure what i'll do with my diet - according to my gwfit, i'm burning about twice the calories and i was really feeling it with the weights. i need to eat more calories!!
thanks for all the good wishes - really needed them as this has been a real adjustment period for me!!
Sounds like you're having fun, even with the work. Glad to hear that. I know that when I first went back I was a little concerned about being the oldest person there (which it turns out that I'm not, but still).
get a lot more walking this semester (we seem to spend a lot of time going from one side of the college to the other). Luckily it's small enough that it's all indoors. Although during better weather there are some short cuts that take you outside. In this weather, we're taking the long way...
