oK folks, speak up! How many of you are emotional eaters? I want to open up a topic of conversation. You know them well if you are one. Always on a diet. But always look the same. Busting our butts Mon-Friday and ruining the deficit on the weekends. This equals maintanence. Whether its overeating here and there or an all out binge. No matter what, it destroys your progress, and your morale.
So speak up. How many of you are struggling with this? ANd lets talk about ways to break the cycle.
I am an emotional eater at heart, but I have made significant progress over the last couple of years. I am good at following a plan, but the exceptions always break me. The only way I can avoid emotional eating is to be strict and have no tolerance for excuses. I would always be able to come up with a reason to allow myself to have a treat. Same thing with exercise. I would always have an excuse not to do it, so I developed a zero tolerance policy for excuses. It does get easier with time. I have learned to feel the same comfort from sticking to my plan that I used to get from feeding my face with junk.
Well, I dodged a bullet and lost a pound. I know I can't get away with this all the time after the piggin' I did this weekend.
I tend to eat "emotionally" when I'm alone. I'm a closet binge eater and it happens usually when I'm bored or stressed. I've had episodes where I bought some candy bars - ate two on the drive home, snuck one while my husband (then fiance) went to the restroom and then had another one for dessert after a huge dinner. I was stressed because of our wedding and my dissertation defense which were scheduled within 6 days of each other
For me, not having trigger foods in the house is critical. Likewise, finding ways to be distracted (i.e. on the computer, writing, exercise) is impt. and I also try to ride out a craving by waiting 20 minutes and drinking plenty of water before I give in to a binge. I'm not always successful but I've been able to stop many a slide into tortilla chips and guacamole.
hey there, everyone!
i'm getting a late start here as i was out of town all last week. stayed on program pretty well, even with all of the meals out.
as for how i stay motivated - i love the forums here. i don't post a whole lot but i read tons. lots of really good info and so many inspiring stories. i end up sitting longer than i should, but i always come away smiling and ready to kick butt!
ps - jane: new log link in my sig - thanks for making a list!
I can be an emotional eater - now it is more if it is there I feel the need to eat it. I am often too focused to eat too poorly but I also have been so focused on weight loss for so long that I had to take that focus off the food. I am more focused on eating to fuel my body for the work I put it through. Mainly because I need to track but not obsess. If that makes any sense.

I am definitely in this catagory. It has taken me years but with my husband's help I have overcome it. When cycle time is close it tries to come back but I keep it in check. I used to mess up the whole week and then start back strong after that, do great for 3 weeks, then here we go again, cycle time. My husband had said I was like clockwork. I would always undo my progress during this week. PN butter was my comfort food. You know how caloric that can be when overeating. I realized I had emotional ties to it because that's what me and my dad would always share growing up (he was my rock, always there for me) and ever since he passed that was always what I would grab when upset. Would eat half the jar. I never linked it till I listened to a show that gave an example of this. I think that helped me start taking control. I share this in case there is someone like me but hasn't realized why the might binge on a certain food.
I'm doing great today, yesterday was about 150 calories over my goal but not bad. Did 70 min cardio on treadmill and 1 hour training. Today I have done 45min SS cardio so far.
Well I'm not exactly an "emotional" eater... but I am much more lax on weekends, especially when I'm with others who aren't keeping track of what they're eating. I try to make decent choices, but even if I do that, my portions tend to be all over the place. I also tend to be in situations where I'm not in control of the food that's around me. Like this coming weekend we're all going out and while I'll try to find something decent on the menu, I know the chicken is cooked in uber amounts of oil and butter... which ruins the nutrition of it. *Sigh*. I'm working on it though.
Emotional eater...definitely one right here! The only way I was able to curb that habit, was to allow myself to have the things I want. I allow myself a dessert or a treat every day. If I don't I will binge and my binges are almost always emotional. So a suggestion for a way to work around it...let yourself have something here and there...if you completely disallow any treats...you will not make it in the long run!!
I don't consider myself an emotional eater but I do tend to let my guard down when I get tired. I always try to keep cooked chicken in the fridge so if it is 7pm all of a sudden I can throw a salad together for dinner and I am not tempted to have hubby pick up a "wheel of death" (pizza) on his way home from work.
Here is a question for you ladies...Do you find you are weaker during your TOM? My workout was rough tonight. Then I realized my TOM started early. Correlation?

We always ask for our food to be cooked without butter or oil when we're at places like Outback or Olive Garden or any of the other steaky places, and we've never had any problems with people going along with our requests. We (DH and I) also try to check out online menus beforehand and see if we can scout out nutritional info so that we are armed with as much info as possible.
Have you guys been watching the Olympics? I'm watching the Men's Gymnastics right now and I'm in absolute awe of their bodies and how they can use them. I just watched one of the USA guys on the high bar and holy cow he did some amazing stuff! And one of the China guys on the rings was so unbelievably impressive! Are you guys having any experiences like this--now that you're perhaps more aware of the different muscles and the work that probably goes into some of those moves or the building of some of those muscles?
Yep, I love actually feeling my back muscles working. Never could before I started lifting. And being able to feel my abs engage when I do certain movements makes me feel powerful. Love that!
I missed the Olympics. I used to love watching the gymnastics as a kid. Are they still on?
I was watching the gymnastics... at least until I fell asleep on the couch LOL! I was impressed with them too.... such awesome power! I'm psyched for the US men...they did great!
"As far as (healthy) eating, either do it, or don't. Same issues repeated over and over is just insanity. We either commit to the endeavor or pay lip-service to it. This is the hardest part of the whole process, and it needs to be practiced more than the actual physical training. It's mind training." ~ Matt Thorne
"The reason that most people fail instead of succeed is that they trade what they want most for what they want at the moment."

I'm so sad we cancelled our TV service and I'm missing the Olympics now. This is the only time I've been sad in the 5+ months that we haven't had TV. My little brother is a gymnast, and has competed regularly against one of the members of the US men's team (Sasha Artemev). It's so cool to see what they can do. I think gymnasts have some of the most hardcore bodies of all athletes - they're so strong and have to have so many muscles working together all at once. My brother can do some pretty freaking amazing stuff with his body. He's defintely an inspiration for me!
You know what would be a cool goal? To do an iron cross...

Yep, this has pretty much summed up my last 2 weekends and it sucks. I am back on track and even though we have company coming in from out of town, it's all good. I plan on cooking some secretly healthy stuff. My friend that is coming is currently working on losing some weight, so that helps.

Oh, yes. Last week was TOM and an absolute struggle for me. It sucked and I am happy to be over it. I hadn't noticed it as much before, because I wasn't tracking as hardcore as I am trying to, now. I felt absolutely ravenous last week.

You may be anemic and so there for fell weaker. I am this way every month. Try increasing your greeny leafy vegatables eggs and muscle meats to increase your red blood cell production. Hope that helps.

You can see a lot of it online. I don't remember the exact site, but I think it was NBC Olympics. I just did a search and found all kinds of video of performances and highlights.

You don't need cable or satellite to watch most of the olympics. You can just watch plain old NBC. Or, do you mean you don't have a TV?
And, of course, the internet, as others have mentioned.
