I need a nap right now! Crappy day at the gym work-wise. I dragged myself in at 9:00 a.m. for a no show. Then another no show, then a client who showed up with an injury that he got last night, in a lot of pain, so he had to reschedule. I got my workout in between 10:00 a.m. and my 11:00 a.m. My noon appt had cancelled yesterday and my one o'clock was a no show. 2:00 p.m. also cancelled, but at least I knew that ahead of time. Two of the no shows were free fitness assessments, one was scheduled to come in and sign up for training. But at least I got my workout in early.

Stage 1B, Workout 3
Did some mobility warmups from Eric Cressey's Maximum Strength.

Deadlift 2x12x125lbs.

DB Shoulder Press 2x12x20's
Wide-grip lat pulldown 2x12x90

Lunge 2x12x50lbs. (barbell)
Swiss-ball crunch 2x15x10 lb. plate

I ordered some cute Nike Free Mary Jane style shoes on Wednesday--they were at my door Friday night. Wore them today for the first time. They feel like slippers. These are not meant for running--not 7.0, 5.0 or 3.0, just like everyday shoes I guess, but suitable for weight training. So, for any treadmill running I'll have to put on running shoes. But these are so comfy and cute!

I know I mentioned this before, but I am really enjoying the short and sweet Stage 1 workouts. Since I can only get in three a week they are going so sloooow. I need to get more strict with my deficit, though, i.e., less food. I know I can do it.

Hey Kathy, that sucks about all those cancellations! Your Nikes sounds cute. Running shoes are so heavy, I like the lighter shoes like yours for lifting.

Awesome workout

I hate when everyone cancels and no-shows... I remember one year during spring break, I went from 40 hours of clients to 3. Bleh.

That's part of why I have a job that doesn't include much training these days!

Thanks, Ceebee and the Nike's are adorable. My bf makes fun of them because they remind him of little girl shoes. Duh! He doesn't get it. He doesn't understand fashion that isn't about looking as hot and sexy as possible.

Yeah, it especially sucks when it is Sunday and I couldn't have slept a little longer...or cleaned or something (maybe). 40 hours to 3! Wow, that would really suck. People can be such flakes.

Push up test prior to starting week three:

27 push ups. Test taken this morning after breakfast and my first cup of coffee. So, I am technically still working from the third column, but I'm really thinking maybe I should move to column 2. There is no way I'm going to be able to complete 25 reps for my 5th set tonight. Or I'll attempt it and if I don't then demote myself to column 2? If you don't make the minimum for the 5th set is that an automatic demotion? I guess it should be. I think column 2 will be tough enough.

Week 2, Day 3 Pushup Program
15
15
12
12
19 !! (not bad--I may not do so bad on that pre-week three test after all)

Yesterday, nutrition was good but got out of work at 9:30 p.m. and didn't feel like doing any kind of exercise before I left. I took today off and was really looking forward to sleeping. I woke up this morning with just enough time to eat, do my pushups, and get ready for my company picnic. Hard to say today calorie-wise where I am. They served barbecue pork, beef and chicken at the picnic and I had all three. I easily said 'no' to rolls, beans and potato salad. I first passed on corn, too, because I was avoiding the starchiness. I was told there were more vegetables at the end of the line. Well, turned out to be veggie skewers for the vegetarians and since I already had a plate full of meat I couldn't pretend to be a vegetarian. So I went back and added corn and picked up a wedge of honeydew melon (3 total before the day was done) from the fruit table. Turned out none of the food tasted that great, although I cleaned my plate. I'm always good for that, which is why packing pre-portioned food works so well for me. I ended up having a small bag of popcorn (only because my boss was serving it and it was an opportunity to say 'hi'). Drank a ton of water, had two jello shooters a berry flavored Smirnoff at the very end. Came home and napped. I am still waking up from my nap.
You should have proudly told them you are an oinko, moo-o, clucko vegetarian and proudly grabbed a skewer of vegtables!

Pushups, Week 3, Day 1
Okay, I started in the third column since I earned it this morning, but I gave myself 90 second rests instead of 60s. It isn't cheating because it does say 'longer if required'. It was required.

Set 1: 25
Set 2: 17
Set 3: 17
Set 4: 15 (hardest 15 ever)
Set 5: 10+5+5+5 (was supposed to be at least 25--there was no way in hell I was going to get off 25 straight, so this was my compromise. I gave myself 30s rests between the last 3 increments of 5.

Day 2 is going to kill me. Do I drop to column 2 then? Probably.

Ha, my feet hurt now when I wear high heels, so I just bust out hot and sexy as needed, in small doses.

Great job on the pushups!

Yeah, "small doses" can be more potent . Except in my case. My bf wants me to look good...but look is about all he does.

And thanks on the pushups. I was looking pumped after those sets...it was pretty cool. My bf is a freak (yeah, that was already established above)--he pumped up huge doing his. I'm a little worried about my shoulder impingement and how all this volume is going to effect it. In the meantime, I'll keep pushing on.

Pushups, Week 3, Day 2
Handled these similar to day 1. I know a tiny bit of cheating involved, but I figure the higher volume will make me stronger than dropping down to column 2? Maybe?

Set 1: 27
Set 2: 19
Set 3: 19
Set 4: 15 broken down as 8 + 7 (truly the hardest 15 ever)
Set 5: 15 + 10 (was 25 minimum--I gave minimum)

No work...no workout...no food. Oh, wait, yeah I did eat. The last two days I decided to try just three meals. I think I need to go with 4 at least because I like snacking. I have a tendency to snack on nuts when I'm hungry.

I think you're doing great on the pushups. And I agree, week 3 is hard! But I did like you and broke the sets down when I absolutely couldn't get one more rep in. I think that's better, to get more and really push yourself rather than not being as challenged.

I forced myself to work out last night at 9:45 p.m. Since I'm still in stage 1 and I knew it wouldn't take that long I decided to just go for it. I almost quit after the cable rows/push ups because that pesky knot in my left calf was really bothering me. I foam rolled and stretched and foam rolled and stretched some more. I was still limping around. I did my step ups and I could barely finish on my right leg just because touching down with my left leg was so painful.

Stage 1A, Workout 4
Squat 2x12x95

T Push-up 2x12xbw (does anyone else think these are easier than regular?)
Seated Row 2x12x90lbs

Step-up 2x12x50lb barbell
Prone jackknife 2x10

Almost exactly like workout 3, wow. How about that. Boy, is this stage moving slooow. But still enjoying that the workouts are quick and I'm almost done as soon as I've started.

Another reason I forced myself to workout...we had another one of those birthday potlucks and I didn't even think about trying to not eat or not eat cake. I did at least bring real cheddar cheese, roasted chicken and avocados so there would be something I would eat (there was a huge crockpot full of nasty-ass fake nacho cheese). Food wise, I did okay, didn't go back for seconds, but the chips weren't great. But I did have a lot of cake...probably 2-1/2 pieces. Didn't feel guilty or even try to deprive myself. I am just no good at that. Even if I had initially said 'no', eventually I would have gone back and pigged out. Anyway, I didn't eat at all after my workout. Just went home, checked email, and went to bed. I'll have to make up for it this weekend.

Kathy, I added 10# dbs with the t-pushups and that really made a difference. I'm sorry about the knot on your calf. Do you know what it's from? Again, I have to say I'm so impressed that you can still motivate yourself to work out with all those long hours you work.

In the past I have done the T pushups with dumbbells...and will again probably in the next, lower rep, workouts but even when I add the DB's they are still easier than regular pushups to me because I get a break--its like pausing at the top of every pushup. True the db's add more intensity and make it more taxing in that way, but the pause still makes it seem easier--although it takes longer and that part it less appealing.

I have no idea what caused the knot. It is driving me crazy. It first hit me a couple of weeks ago when I was just walking during a break at my day job. I was just walking and not with any kind of intensity and suddenly it hurt so bad I was limping. After stretching and foam rolling, it seemed to be getting better. Then last night just walking around the gym, it started up again. Doesn't seem to be triggered by exercise. It is pissing me off.

Thanks! The calf pain is much better today. Still some residual soreness, but I can walk normal.

Stage 1B, Workout 3
Mobility warmups, foam rolling, some static stretching.

Deadlift 2x12x115lbs. -- Okay, just realizing I did 125 lbs. last time and only 115 this time. No wonder it felt so easy! Man, I just whipped off those 12 reps. Honestly, although they didn't feel too difficult last time, I did these with speed. LOL...well, gee, no wonder.

DB Shoulder Press 2x12x20's
Wide-grip lat pulldown 2x12x90

Lunge 2x12x50lbs. (2 25 lb. plates) -- Ugh, couldn't find the fixed 50 lb. barbell, so I went back to 25 lb. plates. Felt like my arms were going to be yanked out of their sockets.

Swiss-ball crunch 2x15x25 lb. plate (since I had the 25 lb. plates right there, I used use those).

Finished with Gray Cook deep squat progressions. Might see slight improvement.

Tonight I will be doing my Week 3, Day 3 pushups. I decided to give my impinged shoulder a rest and do them today instead of last night. My bf couldn't wait for me. He's at home all day waiting for me to get home at night so we can push up together. So usually the moment I get home be it 10:00 or 10:30 p.m. he is usually right there in my face with "Are you ready to do the pushups now?" Much as I want to, I never say no (yeah, that can be a problem ). I guess tonight it will be up to me to make myself do them. These are going to kill me this time, I just know it.

Back on track with nutrition today. Last night was a bust--went out to celebrate a gym friend's birthday. I ordered the grilled caesar salad with grilled salmon and I requested anchovies. I guess that was a weird combination, but I love anchovies and it is so hard to find anyone that serves actual anchovies with their caesar salad. We ate at the Roadhouse, so I ate some peanuts and 4 or 5 rolls!!! It is so weird--I am so out of the habit of eating bread, but these were so tasty, and it took so long for dinner to be served since there were 8 or 10 of us. They sat in front of me all sweet with their yummy butter. No drinks, though. Just water. I'm back on today. I think my biggest problem is that I have worked so hard to get to where I am I feel like I earned the right to indulge. I guess it isn't really a problem as long as I continue to get back on track. It might slow down my progress, but I'm still headed in the right direction.

One of the guys at the dinner has a crush on me. He knows I'm in a relationship, so he isn't obnoxious about it, but he always pays for my dinner and lunches when we all meet for lunch. Last night he agreed to buy some personal training sessions with me...but he made it clear that to him they will be like dates. So, I asked him then if he would like to buy 10 dates. Hmm...what does that make me? Honestly, there won't be anything but training going on except maybe in his mind. I told my bf about the potential sale...but not about his motives! I need the sales that desperately...

You are grown, but I know you know these don't sound good. So are you mentioning them because you want a response or are you mentioning them thinking that if no one responds that all's good?

When I read these, I'm worried about you.

X3

Remember that even if you joke with clients and become friendly with them, you don't EVER want to get a reputation as a trainer who dates or even flirts with clients... No amount of $ from the purchase of a package is worth sacrificing your reputation. Set a firm limit with this guy or else don't train him

Honestly nothing to worry about. Everything I wrote was intended to be taken lightly. Nothing negative going on here, truly.

While I appreciate your concern, it really never occurred to me that the above would have been taken in a negative way at all. Did this sound like my bf was being aggressive or ? Not sure how you're reading this. Basically, I was just saying that while I'm working two jobs he's at home all day (mostly) eagerly waiting for me to come home so we can do our pushups together. So, the minute I walk in the door after he aks "How was your day?" in the next breath he is asking if I'm ready to do pushups. The other part was me just being silly as in "I'm just a girl who can't say no" a la the character in the play Oklahoma. I was trying to be cute, but I guess I missed the mark! I only meant at 10:30 p.m., after working two jobs, I kind of want to say 'no' to pushups, but I don't want to disappoint him, and I do want to do them before the night is over, so I do it. He is my motivator. How did I screw that up so bad?

As for my friend who agreed to buy the personal training sessions...again, nothing to be concerned about. He is part of the morning gang I used to socialize with when I was just another gym member and working out at 5:00 a.m. We (not just the two of us) regularly meet for lunch and the occasional birthday get together. He did ask me out once, but once he learned that I have a bf he has been totally respectful of that fact. Really, he is just helping me out and he's a funny guy and he's playing around when he says the sessions will be like dates to him. I thought I was being funny when I asked him to buy 10 dates. He is more interested in the opportunity to spend time with me than the actually benefit he will get from the training, that's true, but it is otherwise completely innocent. Even if I didn't have a bf, I have no interest in this guy romantically or physically. He is just a friend...typical guy friend who wishes it could be more but accepts that it never will be, so we're just friends. Nothing creepy or weird. There is no reason for anyone to think that I am 'dating' or involved with my client. It isn't even close to that.

So, the only reaction I expected to get from my post was more along the lines of "LOL". I'm sorry! I will be more careful in how I word things and with my use of emoticons. I'm embarrassed that I managed to raise your concern. You guys, I'm fine, really! My life is great, my bf is a sweetheart, my gym friend is harmless. It's all good.

Hi Kathy! I'm still working on checking out everyone's logs, slowly but surely. Looks like you're getting your workouts in and I don't know where you find the energy when you're working two jobs . Best of luck with the second job and making quotas--that would be really hard for me as I'd like the training aspect and hate the sales aspect.

Hi Karen--

Thanks for stopping by! I honestly don't know how long I can keep up this schedule. My intention was to build up my business at the PT job and give up the day job. But since I $1,000 in sales away from being fired each month, I'm thinking that's not going to happen. I really, really hate the sales and am hoping that I can generate sales based on my reputation and people coming to me. The best clients are the ones who come looking for training...not the ones who got a few free sessions with their membership package (or who got bamboozled by a fast talking sales counselor) and really couldn't care less about the training--that makes up the majority of my clients so far.

Hi Kathy,
Don't be embarrassed OR think that you should be more careful in your words. I've definitely put my foot in it using words that when read didn't convey the message I intended. I'm GLAD my concern was unnecessary.

Kathy, where did you get your bikini? I want to get one for monthly pics and maybe eventually for vacation use, but all I find around here is no support triangle tie bikinis that are intended for the very young. I want a decent-looking push-up type top, not a teeny top .

Hi Karen--

I got my bikini from Venus at Swimwear, Swimsuits, and Women's Clothing - VENUS. I have pretty good luck ordering clothing online. Of course, I feel a little ripped off because it doesn't look the same one me as it did on the model . I so cannot do triangle top...I need all the support I can get.

Thank you! Yup, that's always a tad annoying when it doesn't look like the picture, LOL .

No workouts so far this week. Late nights and I refuse to go in on my night off. I just want to go home. I failed so miserably on my Week 3, Day 3 push up attempt on Sunday night that I took a couple of days off and thought about moving to the middle column. Might as well lay it out:

Week 3, Day 3 meltdown

29 + 1 (2 min. rest) -- after a false start where I did about six and collapsed
22 (5 min. rest) -- only with these long rests was I able to carry on
22 (5 min. rest)
20 (then about a 15 minute rest)
was supposed to do at least 27, with 3 attempts I was unable to complete more than one.

Last night my bf suggested I just continue on in column three for week 4, day 1 since the reps actually drop back down a little, but shorter rest periods. In the end I decided to start over with Week 3 and did day 1 again last night. For some reason it was much harder than the first time. It went like this:

Week 3, Day 3 all over again
25
17
15 + 2
8 + 7
15 + 10

At least the rest periods on these were close to what they were supposed to be. I'll redo week three for this week repeating day 2 on Friday and day 3 on Sunday again. How is it I'm getting weaker? I did have a pretty big dinner about an hour before and drank large amounts of water. Maybe the extra weight of the food and water weighed me down enough to kill it. My bf was having the same struggles I was, and we had the same dinner so, hmm...it must have been the chicken.

Kathy, don't beat yourself up! Do you realize that your "horrible meltdown" consisted of at least 84 pushups and the second was 99?!!! How many people, man or woman, can say they do 99 or even 84 pushups in a day? You're doing great and you're persevering. As far as getting weaker, you said yourself you've had lots of long days and late nights so you may just be TIRED. I know I would be. So be proud of yourself and keep it up, ok? (Say "Yes, Mom")

Seriously though we can't all have great days all the time. Sometimes for no reason we're just a little off. It will get better.
