Honestly, if you have to worry about calories or worry about Macros, worry about the calories. If carbing it up is the difference between cheating and not cheating then stick to the calories. because if you go for calories, you're still meeting calories in vs. calories out. And as long as your intake is less than your output, you are golden!
Thanks Paula... that's what I keep reminding myself!

I'm rooting for you. Keep up the great work. 20 lbs. will be gone in no time.
I sure hope so! So much of this is a mental game for me that I think the postive results so far will definitely be a help! I'm sooo motivated right now!

7/15 Totals:

1606 calories
41% carbs
35% protein
24% fat

Well, at least I know I'll have it easy during the weeks where my macros are supposed to be 40-35-25. That's what I seem to be getting every day.... need to investigate more protein sources before I get bored out of my mind with the ones I'm currently eating.

Today I spent lots of time cleaning out the upstairs. I have a husband who is a MAJOR packrat. Here are some of the ridiculous things I found today:
  • You remember Columbia House? Let me know if you want to order anything from any catalog produced in the 1980's... I can probably get it for you. WHY would anyone keep these?
  • Popsicles sticks from popsicles he ate... well, geez... they do have the trivia questions on them! I can see where these would be useful, can't you?
  • Real Estate Guides from probably the last 3 years.... well, they were free, you know... and he might need them some day if the houses he once was interested in ever go BACK on the market, right?
There's just a little glimpse into the world of the packrat. Pathetic. I called my best friend at work today and asked if it would be OK to dump some stuff in her recycling bin... and then I did it. She just lives around the corner, thankfully...
Sad but true.... I was concerned that my dh would go through the bin in our yard and see what he wanted to "take back" once he saw that I had been throwing stuff out!

Anyone want to nominate me for "Clean House?" We could totally use that reality show!!

I didn't realize how bad I was with being a packrat, Lori, until my husband decided to clean the fridge and freezer and found a wrapped, sealed draft of my dissertation that I forgot I put there for safe-keeping.

Was I paranoid, much? LOL

Great job on your workouts. What is cardio tennis class all about? Do you do structure tennis drills or play matches?

That's PRETTY bad, Donna... ROFL!

Thanks. Cardio tennis is basically drills, with a little extra cardio thrown in. For example, we hit a long forehand, run up and hit a short forehand, then run and tag the net post and run back to the end of the line. Stuff like that.... pretty fun usually, but considering the fact that I managed to break (or pretty badly bruise... not sure) my pinky toe on my right foot by running into a flat of Gatorade bottles (I've mentioned my issues with klutziness here somewhere, right?) it hurt like hell last night. It was manageable, but let's just say it's a good thing I took Advil before I went to class. Ouch. Oh, and THEN half of us were picking up balls while the others were still doing drills, and I got hit in the chest with a ball! The lady felt bad, but hey... what can you do?

Today's workout:
Dynamic warm up
45 min on bike at level 6/7... manual setting
5 min on bike level 4
stretching/recovery

Thoughts: I had planned to run today, but due to said toe injury I decided against it. A good decision for sure. On the bike, I decided to use the manual setting rather than the random setting that I normally use. On the random setting, I use levels 9-12, but on the manual, I found it difficult to use 7 until I was warmed up a bit. Quite a reality check there. Wonder what the difference is due to? My MHR was about 136... a little higher than 70%, but it felt good, and not too taxing. You wouldn't know it to look at me though... damn I sweat a LOT. I just don't get people who manage to walk out of the gym after working out and look like they just got there, kwim? That will NEVER be me. Just as well... if I'm going to work hard, I want people to KNOW that I worked hard LOL!

I'm thinking about adjusting the timeline for the OPT program for the next couple of weeks. In thinking ahead, I've got Cub Scout day camp all next week, and then the following week (which is supposed to be my rest week) I've got my first ever 10K. Thinking that I *really* don't want to pass out and end up in the medical tent, I think it makes more sense for me to cut out week 3, move to a rest week next week (when I won't have the energy to get to the gym anyway after 8 hour days of teaching bb gun shooting to Cub Scouts!) and then resume with week 5 the following week. In reality, I'm going to need to repeat OPT at least once anyway, so I think this makes more sense for me.

Okay the writer in me is laughing at this. However the packrat in me will admit to throwing away 100s of lbs of notebook paper after I finished with grad school and realized I was never going to transcribe the notes I took in my Archaeology undergrad.

hehehe at the packrat stuff! I'm bad, but not that bad--not yet, at least! It's been good for my packratting tendencies that we have moved every couple of years since we got married!

Great job so far on following the program, Lori! I just set up an excel program to track my calories and macros (spark people doesn't let me do the macros and percentages) and let's just say that I'm shocked at what my macros have been for the last couple of days. No freakin' wonder I've been struggling! Anyway, it's back to the grind for me, so hopefully I'll be having the same success you're having! I need to start a log--probably next week...

Maybe SP just doesn't like you Sinead! It lets me do macros and %'s... when you are at your food log, scroll down to the bottom right. There's a button there that says "See today's Full Report". When you click on that, it gives you the macros and % of each... and you can add in other nutrients if you want to.

Lori, you are doing great! Woo hoo!

BTW, I live with a pack rat who is just as bad as yours. Mine has a child's metal desk from when he was 12 hanging from my rafters because it has sentimental value, will not part with 20+ year old college text books, and still wears tee shirts from when he was in his 20's. He hates that show Clean House--it just pisses him off that they make people part with their useless crap. He thinks it is cruel and unusual punishment. I don't dare throw away even a scrap of paper I find on the floor if it has his writing on it. He would not forgive me.

I am the opposite--I want to throw everything away. I want to live as clutter free as possible. Alas, my garage is full of his crap.

Food totals 7/16:

1,647 calories
38% carbs
31% protein
31% fats

Thoughts: My carb calories were actually where they needed to be to hit the right macros earlier in the day, but between the peach, broccoli and Kashi Trail Mix bar that I had later in the day, that pretty much did me in. The calories would have been right on target but for that bar, too.... but I knew that, and ate it anyway. I ate an early dinner and gave myself "permission" to eat it so that I wouldn't be quite so hungry later. I'm OK with that, too.... at least I feel like I was eating pretty healthy stuff, so if my calories are a little over, I can deal with it. It's not like I was poppin' donut holes or anything LOL!

I'm REALLY hoping to get to 70 pounds lost this week... I need to lose just a little itty bitty half a pound! Should be easy, right?

Nice job Lori. I understand "permission". I've actually given myself permission to binge before. I was under some stupid impression I was 20 and could lose any gain by just looking cute. I had to talk myself out of a second Kashi Cookie because I needed to get my calories right. I've been over for the past 2 days and if I didn't real it in soon, I'd go from "Donna with Potential" to "Donna morphs into Fat Bastard". I think if you stay on target with your meals and stick with your exercise plan, you'll see that 70lb loss.

Thanks ladies! After being stuck since January (and gaining about 8 pounds) before starting Leigh's program, I'm beyond excited to see the scale moving downward again!

Today's workout:
Dynamic Warm-up
Resistance Training
Program A-1:
Wide Stance DB Deadlifts
(25#)
Swiss Ball Bridge
Swiss Ball Flys (10#... was easier this time)
Neutral Grip Shoulder Press (stuck with the 10#... definitely easier too... but not easy, kwim?)
Prone Supermans
Low to High Woodchops
(went with 20# and that was good)
Planks (1 min, 1 min, 1 min)
Recovery (foam roller, stretching)

Felt good with the workout today.... definitely easier than the first couple of times.

Totals for 7/17:

1657 calories
42% carbs
37% protein
21% fat

Not a bad day overall..... I had shrimp w/ a tad of cocktail sauce for lunch, followed by some ff ricotta cheese mixed with a bit of cinnamon & splenda, and that definitely filled me up for a while.

So we went to a SeaDogs baseball game tonight with Cub Scouts (the SD are an affliliate of the Red Sox) and by the time we got there, we weren't able to sit with the majority of the pack. What a pain. There were a couple of seats, though... so dh and one of the boys sat there... but then gave up their seats to someone who got there even later than us (THAT doesn't happen often... the getting there later, I mean..) ANYWAY... the dad was grateful that we gave up the seats, and to show his appreciation he bought us each a Sea Dogs Biscuit... oh no! Just for the record.... it's basically an ice cream sandwich made with 2 BIG chocolate chip cookies and vanilla ice cream in the middle. YUM. OK, so I thought about eating it, and rationalized that it was *only* 340 calories.... but then that damn voice of reason started yakking, telling me that eating it would not help me reach my fat loss goals. I turned around and offered it to the boy behind me, who... get this.... DIDN'T WANT IT!! Luckily his mother said "I'll take it!!" and I was happy to hand it over! Phew...

I bought french fries for the boys later... and I'm happy to report that I didn't eat any of those, either.... double "phew". I'm so glad that I planned ahead and ate dinner before we went to the game.... smart move from both an OPT and monetary standpoint!

Good job on the food! I'd have been challenged to do what you did!

7/19

Today's workout:
Dynamic warm up (5 min)
Resistance Training
Program A2:
Step Ups
(not sure if I'm supposed to 5 each leg, or 10 each leg, so I did 10 each side for a total of 20)
DB Face Pulls (7#)
Bent Over Rows (15#)
Standing Bicep Curls (12# was still tough... but I'm going to stick with this weight and struggle through them if I have to.)
Trunk Extension (kinda fun!)
Side Plank (managed the full minute on the first set, but only 45 sec the second time through)
Stretching

UGH! Food totals today are nowhere near where they should be.... I had used about 1200 cal heading into dinner, which was not smart, considering that tonight was scrapbook night with friends. I ate too much food, and recognized that immediately because I felt full, even uncomfortably so. It's not even that it was all "bad" food.... just too much of it, beyond what I needed. I did drink a LOT of water (like 5 bottles LOL) so that probably contributed to the fullness, but clearly I've still got issues with controlling the amount of food that I'm eating on a daily basis, AND I need to just avoid certain foods for the time being (like chocolate, for instance!).

Tomorrow's another day! (Well, come to think of it, it IS tomorrow already..... so I guess I should say TODAY is another day!)

All I can say is I understand... BTDT (just this past week!)... ugh.

Tonight we are going out with my parents and they picked a place that serves "family style" italian food. I'm TRYING so hard to plan ahead, because my weight is doing well and I don't wanna mess it up over one dinner... sigh...
