Nice to see ya back at the Y and with all the good stories too! Have fun over the weekend with the family!
Thanks, Karla!
By the way, is my memory correct that you have a mini schnauzer? We just got one three weeks ago. Our first family dog!
Now he's at the kennel for the weekend, but I think he'll forgive us.

Heh, it was either that or a "Welcome Back, Kotter" theme after seeing Steve Cotter's kettlebell stuff at JP's summit. But that show was before my time, so I went with Zack and Kelly.

Good thing I'm doing this challenge thing with a big focus on career. Our CEO and CFO took me to lunch today and asked me to start a new department at the company. Basically a call center to help with both sales and customer support and satisfaction. They see it as the potential engine to stall corporate decline and eventually spur growth. They made it clear that this will be my baby to design and run as I see fit.
Gonna be a busy second half of 2008.

DUDE!!! That is amazing! I always say that if you put out the energy life will respond. You put it out there and this came at ya very quickly. Congratulations on this big day. I can't wait to follow.
YES! I have a mini-schnauzer that I absolutely adore. I picked him up from the pound about 2.5 years ago. He is about 9 years old with an unknown past. We assume he was neglected and possibly abused due to his scars and inhibitions when I got him. He was terrified of men and did not know how to live in the house. Now he loves men (not as much as his mommy though) and he sleeps on my pillows on the bed. When I try to move him to get in, he growls at me.
His name is Sherman and he is my running partner and walking partner and basic PIA. He also is my cat's friend now. (see pic) I saw yours on the RW AVI a few weeks back and fell in love. He is so cute. Schnauzers are really good dogs. The only downfall to the breed that I can tell is that they are wanderers by nature. If he has any way at all to get out of a yard he will go down the street. He always comes back but he also always wanders. Put tags on her with your telephone numbers.

Well, it's not really a promotion -- just more work. I can guarantee you a title change won't be coming, and I won't be unleashing my old job either. Now I get to do two jobs!
The best I can do is probably wrangle some kind of manager override into whatever compensation plan I develop for the new team. And perhaps a small increase in base salary. But for political reasons I just don't see a formal promotion anytime in the near future.
I'm still excited because it's a new challenge. Just wanted to clear up any misunderstandings.
(I tried to call RedWifey before I posted here)

Our Mo (short for Moses cuz he's very shy... ba dum bum...) has an almost identical story. 14 months old, lived his first 4 months on a puppy farm and was apparently abused. The SPCA rescued all the dogs there and a foster family took Mo and nursed his body and spirit over the past year.
The foster home was a single mom, so Mo connected pretty quickly to RedWifey and the kids. But me, as an adult male, he's taking a bit longer to get comfortable with because of his background. We're getting there, although I don't think he'll be singing, "Hallelujah, it's raining men" anytime soon.

Good to know. We live at the dead-end corner of a block, essentially a square cul-de-sac, so there's almost no traffic. We also have some nice wooded and overgrown areas with bunnies, cats and other critters (one possum spotted). So far he's not interested in being more than 20 inches from RedWifey's leg when they're out walking and he doesn't even need a leash. But as he gets more comfortable with the area he might do some browsing.

No workouts yet this week. We got back from RedWifey's grandadd's BD party Sunday night, then RedWifey's brother and his family have been here all week. So after work I was rushing home for dinner/activities.
Now RW is out of town with her best friend whose mother died on Sunday. She's coming back this Sunday night. We found a short daycamp (9am - 3pm) for the kids today and tomorrow, but that still only gives me about five hours at the office. Before and after that I'm juggling the kid stuff.
Add on to that my CEO's recent request to build a new team and I'm flying all over the place.
Gotta go pick up the kids.

Thanks! I'm almost done interviewing all the Directors to see what they would want from this team in supporting their own departments. And I talked with HR to get the ball rolling on recruiting and office prep. My guess is that it will be about a month before I get the first person hired, but we'll see.
I sorta did a workout yesterday, pulling the kids in their wagon up the nearby hill and then sprinting down the hill a few times. The love going fast.
In other news, the new dog Mo is not happy that RedWifey left town. He pooped in our bedroom twice yesterday, both times right next to my side of the bed. I was not amused.
Tonight we'll stick to our regular family Friday pizza and a movie. I have Over the Hedge for the kids.
Oh, and I spent about an hour last night on one of the "Reading Music" links that LisaS sent me, practicing notation and rhythm. It's going to be a slow process but I'm determined to learn.

IT meeting is today. If I wait for them to be ready I won't be hiring for a year. My meeting with them is purely to inform them of what's coming and pretend to need their help, while knowing that I'll just have to do the work myself. I have a much better chance hiring people who can manage the current systems than I do of getting the systems changed.
And I'm not sure about Mo. He's had the pooping thing down for almost three weeks with no accidents. He pooped on my bedroom floor again this morning. Third time in two days.

I feel ya on the dog problems, Michael. Our three have been absolute assholes the past two days for some reason, and the only thing different that's happened has been that they were taken for a long walk two days ago. Since then, they've been whining, jumping on furniture, hyper inside, but as usual, let them out into the big open yard, and they sit, lie down, or sniff everything but don't run around. Bastards.

I'm sure he is out of sorts with RW gone - esp if he's bonded to her as you have said. I'm just saying it isn't spite (but you know that).
If you walk him more and earlier in the morning, he'll be empty and won't have anything left to leave for you.
You're right. And I was already scrambling so much the past two days to get the kids ready for day camp that I just didn't get him out for activity.
Last night he came with us for the wagon-pushing time. He got to sniff around in the weedy areas in our neighborhood.
Problem is the dog just won't play yet. We've gotten him new toys, and kept his old toys from the foster home but he doesn't act interested. He'll play-bite my hand sometimes but when I try to transition to chewtoy/ball/frisbee he shuts down.
On the business front, the CEO and I met this morning and he approved me and my sales guy joining a Call Center industry group that puts out lots of educational material. He also signed off on me going to a conference in August or September to really immerse myself in learning this stuff, plus any online training sessions that I want to do. We talked for a while about my progress so far and he seems pleased.
Also met with IT and they're now aware of what's coming and what type of functionality I might be looking for with the phone systems.
Oh, and I closed a deal today. And it's not even lunch.
August here I come.

A man in a hot air balloon realized he was lost. He reduced altitude andspotted a woman below. He descended a bit more and shouted, 'Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago but I don't know where I am.'The woman below replied, 'You're in a hot air balloon hovering approximately 30 feet above the ground. You're between 40 and 41 degrees north latitude and between 59 and 60 degrees west longitude.''You must be in Information Technology,' said the balloonist.'I am,' replied the woman, 'how did you know?''Well,' answered the balloonist, 'everything you told me is probably technically correct, but I've no idea what to make of your information and the fact is, I'm still lost. Frankly, you've not been much help at all. If anything, you've delayed my trip.
The woman below responded, 'You must be in Management.''I am,' replied the balloonist, 'but how did you know?''Well,' said the woman, 'you don't know where you are or where you're going. You have risen to where you are, due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise, which you've no idea how to keep, and you expect people beneath you to solve your problems. The fact is you are in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but now, somehow, it's my damn fault.'
