I've been through one season with my female - of course she was 6 months old at the time and easier to contain than an adult. We used little-boy underwear on backwards (tail out the fly) to try and keep things neat inside.
Then we had her spayed before we could do that again.

Thanks for the tip, I tried that and she chewed them off... oh well. its been nearly two weeks now, so Im hoping it ends soon.

I'm very happy today. I bought a ticket to see A-ha in London in November. I've loved the band since I was 15, and have followed them for the past 20 years. My teenage wishlist was to go to Paris, and see A-ha play live. They both seemed extreme, as in a small town, only the rich got to go to Paris, and A-ha have only toured Australia once. So now having seen Paris, I get to tick off the next thing on the list. Of course it helps that the singer Morten Harket, is a total sex god on legs, even if he is creeping towards 50. I never had any hangups about my body as a teenager, I just wanted to be a better netballer and volley ball player, it was never about how I looked.

Did a circuit class last night. Oh lordy, it hurt, but in a good way. Now weights, just lots of body weight exercises and jog/runs around the sports oval. My adductors feel a bit tender today, so just dog walking today. I was going to do a Pump class but the high reps on tender quads would kill me, so maybe I will go to the gym later and do back and shoulders.

Default this weeks challenge - eat my vegies!

I have been a 'bit pants' as the British would say, at eating fruit and veggies lately. So seeing as this log is still in the challenge section, I will have a weekly challenge to keep myself motivated. Lose 40 pounds just gets depressing every week. anyways..
Today I have cooked
Lentil dahl (yellow lentils, cooked in water with tumeric, ginger and powdered cumin) on top of that is some fried onion, garlic, cumin seeds and a seeded chilli. I know the fried stuff on top isnt great, but dahl is kinda like porridge, bland until you add the good stuff.

Stuffed red peppers. I parboiled the peppers, so they go all wrinkly in the oven, and I also trim the bottoms so they will stand up in a baking dish. I stuffed the peppers with cooked mushroom, zucchini that had been grated, eggplant and pitted green olives. I stirred in a little bit of couscous with fresh parsley just to keep it all binded together.

I also bought a few bunches of asparagus and broccoli that I intend to steam at dinner each night, so Im getting some pure unadulterated green veg, and then still getting the flavours of the other vegies.

Its been raining, all bloody day, sigh... even the dog doesnt want to go out the front door. I did pump on Sunday and my quads are still tender. I had planned to go for a run last night, but went for a 6km walk instead. Tonight I am going to the gym to do a Body Balance class, but will go on the treadmill for 30 minutes first.

the veggie thing is still going strong, though I wish the steamer was a lot quicker than boiling!
Today I want to mash things, so a cottage pie with mashed sweet potato on top, and spring greens on the side. Cottage pie is great, I just blitz the heck out of onions, celery and carrot in the food processor and then cook it up with some lean lamb mince, a can of tomatoes with fresh parsley and rosemary, then put the sweet potato on top and good to go. I miss cooking for the kids, though not the cleaning up after them, the house is really clean.
Off to take Lily for a 1 1/2 hour walk, she gets bored easily so loves walking in the woods near our house. She has finally finished her season, so no more washing blankets and towels for a while.

We used to make a cross between a tourtierre (french canadian pork pie) and shepherd's pie. It was basically the pork filling, but under a mashed potato topping. I think I'll look out the recipe for the winter. I should be able to lighten it up slightly (even if it means mixing the pork with TVP or turkey or something).

So im halfway through the week already, but this week has been about consistent exercise and upping my daily activity. so far so good, ive been to the gym twice and done a dvd at home today. also left the car at home and done lots of walking, just to get simple things that i can carry home.
My MIL is driving me crazy at the moment. It started on Sunday, she suggested we go to the pub for a curry and a pint on Monday night as she has a friend staying with her. I said no, as Monday night I go to my circuit class at the gym, which is no big deal. In front of DH and a few friends she said 'oh, youre slimming again then'. WTF? Normally I'd ignore it, or say, no, not slimming, just like the class, getting fit, blah blah, but I eye balled her and said 'yep, I'm slimmiing and exercising'
So on Monday when I got to the gym I found out my class had been cancelled as the instructor was away. Most of the class left the gym and the devil on my shoulder said, yeah, go home, get changed and go to the pub. But I had an image of the MIL watching me eat. So instead I went and beasted myself on the treadmill and rowing machine.
Then last night DH and I went to the pub and MIL was there with her friend. We joined them and MIL bought 2 packets of crisps to share with everyone, and opened a packet so everyone could have some. I ignored it, but she said 'she doesnt want any because she's slimming' ahhh
So now I am double sure I am not going to touch any junk or slip up because I have an image of the MIL in my head.
If anything having an annoying MIL makes my consciously think that as the mother of two boys, I will be a MIL one day, and I would never comment on someones size or diet.
But at least we have one thing in common, we both love the same man.

In-laws are so much fun, aren't they? My SIL always makes snide comments about my eating - of course she and her H and kids are all morbidly obese and eat awfully, but hey - if tearing me down makes you feel better, you have fun with that...

The MIL thing is not too bad this week. I went to her surgeon with her, as she needed to have an 8 weeks check up to see that her knee replacement was still ok. She was really nervous about asking the surgeon stuff so I said I woud go with her. The surgeon was very abrupt, talking into a tape recorder the whole time, but all of her questions were answered and I piped up to ask when she could start driving again because Id been driving her around a fair bit. She can start driving straight away which is great. i actually felt sorry for her because her confidence took a real battering and she has been in a lot of pain.

I've been on holiday this week, but staying at home with DH. Its pretty stressful because our landlord has given us 6 weeks to move out, if worse comes to worse we can live with MIL. We are going to look at two houses this week, with the possibility of buying as we can almost afford it now. But we have been going through the shed and cupboards throwing a lot of junk. I swear whatever space you have in a house,. no matter how small you will fill with stuff you never use..

Exercise wise, just lots of walking with the dog, visiting beaches. I even went swimming yesterday, on a beach, in a bikini. i was putting it off because i felt rather blimp like, and it seemed there were only kids and dads in the water, all the mums covered up sitting on towels. but I love the ocean, and it was great. I love that feeling of being so cold youre numb for five minutes. Food wise, not so great, as were on holiday and neither of us can be bothered to cook or go shopping, a real luxury. The kids are back from Australia in 10 days, I cant wait to see them.

I remember as a child (during a vacation) swimming in the North Sea. Even I found that just a little on the cold side! I realize that you're further south, but still....

I'm weighing up whether to do the next challenge or not. so far my track record has been crap, I start then flump out after two/three months.
On the excuses side, i have a heavy time coming up before the end of the year. Our landlord has given us notice to leave, and we have to be out by September 30. DH and I have seen a property we
want to buy, but between an offer being accepted and settlement it may take 8 weeks, so that would mean living with the MIL for four weeks. Which means putting our dog Lily into kennels because she and MIL's dog hate each other to the point where DH has to pull them apart. So, i could suck it up, and diet and train under MIL's nose, which would drive me nuts, or just plod along and do my own 12 week challenge once we move out of here and finally settle in our own place. when we first arrived in the UK we lived with the MIL for 6 months, and it was stressful.
On a good note, the boys arrive back from Australia on Saturday. I cant wait, its been 6 weeks now. They will be so jet lagged, and the fact the flight arrives at 6am probably wont help.
I weighed myself yesterday, and Im down 1 pound. yay, I'd like 2 pounds for this week, and have been weighing out breakfast and lunch, just to see what I actually consume, and Im interested to see what 100 grams of turkey looks like.

Well, I'd say do the challenge, but I can see why you might not want to. I was going to originally say that it's only 4 months, so there was a better chance you'd make it to the end.

You're killing me here. *drool* I've hated sweet peppers my entire life (love hot peppers, though) but have just recently been able to almost like them. If I try making some stuffed ones, especially with mushrooms & zucchini, I bet that would win me over! Man, now I wish I'd planted sweet peppers this year.

Hi Dixie,

Just reading back a bit on your log. Re: eating veggies and stuff - can't have you being pants: got a new Body Fat Solution challenge going. Monthly rollover. One nutrition goal, one exercise goal, one lifestyle goal. Might suit you better than a full on 4-month challenge. Check it out here.

Tip on steaming - you can do it pretty quickly in the microwave. Put in bowl, add a little water. Cover with clingfilm. Poke a few small holes in it. Two to four mins depending on the veg. Unless you're an anti-microwave anti-clingfilm kinda gal.

Diane, roasting them makes them soooo much better. Chargrill them until they're blackened, rub the skin off and eat eat eat.

Thanks for the food tips!
I like the idea of picking one food goal, one exercise goal.
My eyes are bugging out of my head at the moment. DH and I drove up to London yesterday. Normally from Devon that would take about 3 1/2 hours, instead it took 7. A poor soul decided yesterday was the day he was going to jump off a bridge and stopped traffic both ways. Then after getting to London, we had a small bite to eat and straight to bed as the kids got into Heathrow at 5am, which meant leaving where we were staying at 4am. Then a 3 hour drive back home, uhhh... but, my boys are back, so yay, yay!!
I find out on Monday if my landlord will give us an extra 4 weeks til we have to move out, so if that happens I am definitely tempted to do the challenge. we also made an offer on a house, and havent heard back from the agent yet, so lots of waiting.
No exercise today, but I did roll around on the floor and do some stretching and core stuff once the kids and DH crashed out and went to sleep.

thought I should practice posting pics, just in case I do the challenge
At the moment, sitting with DH and boys watching Family Guy.

This is Lily at the beach, she loves it
My boys

My downfall, chocolate cake
The oh my god, before photo August 09

Did lots of walking with Lily today, then things fell apart when DH the boys and I stopped at the local pub, white wine, crisps, then sausage and mash for dinner. Oh well, will know by tomorrow night about comitting to the challenge as Im waiting for the landlord to let us know if we have an extension on moving out, but thats just a convenenient excuse. anyway, back to Family Guy....

The cake was soooo goood, as was the almost solid hot chocolate that went with it..

I know how to post pics, but not sure if I'll explain it right. I have joined flickr, a website where you can post your pics. http://www.flickr.com/
When you join, you can download your photos via the upload your first photos option. It will then prompt you to browse from folders or documents you have on your computer. When you have your first photo, click on to make it large, then above the photo you will find the resize tab which says all sizes, click that and you have the option for medium, small and large. I resize it too small. Then you click copy on that, open up the JP Fitness Forum, go to your blog and then click paste and the photo should work.
I did this photo in medium and small so you can see the difference.

Small usually helps with the challenge photos, as you usually have front, side and back photos, and you can put them all side by side to fit in the blog, and if you dont feel so hot about your body, then small is good
Hope this helps, and you may detect I have a thing for cakes and pastries.

Lol. I figured it out. The trick is not to post the url as a link but to open up the picture icon in the posting box and stick the url in there. My latest () before photos are now up. Not sure if this is a good thing or not, but they're up anyway. Thanks Dix. And step away from the patisserie.

Well done for putting your pics up and including your face. I like your thoughts that we are not our fat, and to identify yourself that way is crippling. So I've decided to step away from the patissierie, that one was in Paris anyway, so wont be popping back there soon..

I've decided to join the challenge, because over the next 4 months I will have so much to deal with I need something to focus on or I will just stress and gobble. I still dont know if the landlord will give us an extension, I dont know if the offer we put on the house has been accepted and I dont know how long we will have to live with the MIL for, as settlement for property in the UK can take anywhere up to 8 weeks from the offer being accepted. If we dont get the offer accepted, I dont want to grab any house going just so we can live here, or pay over the odds to rent either. My main worry is Lily, as she and MIL's dog tear each other apart when they are together, so she would have to go into boarding kennels. but you gotta do what you gotta do. blahdey, blah, blah...

I remember Miss Jane having lots of problems with her Mum, and she said the one thing she could control in her life was the nutrition and exercise, so I think I will take that approach. Now I need to convince DH to take some photos, as I dropped out of the last two challenges, and quite rightly he is a bit sceptical. But third time lucky, here I come.

He is not 'rightly' skeptical. It is for us to have doubts about ourselves and our abilities, and for hubby to stand by us and encourage us no matter how many times we 'start over'. I will send mine down there to give him a good talking to if he is not careful.

I have started a few challenges in the past and dropped out of them for a variety of reasons, some better than others. I recently signed up for a 12-week TT challenge (despite never managing to finish even a 4-week TT programme before) and went all the way, despite wavering in the last 10 days or so. I am incredibly proud of myself for finishing and for what I learned about myself, but it took the other stuff going before to get me to the place where I was able to succeed. We are the culmination of all our past experiences, for good or bad.

It doesn't even matter if you don't 'finish' this challenge - it is a journey, not a destination. Every part you play in it, however small, you get to learn and improve in some way.

stats
age: 36
height: 5'11
weight: 191 lb
bust:42 inches
waist at belly button:37.7
hips:41 inches
right thigh:24.8 inch
body fat: 31%

Goal: to be 160lb by the end of the challenge, and at least 20% body fat..
Plan: circuit class twice a week, body pump/resistance workout 2/3 times a week
Nutrition: eat clean in a deficit, around 1600 daily

I did a Body Balance class, was feeling kinda bleah,, so it was nice to strecth out. the landlord has given us 2 extra weeks, so leaving day is now October 17, instead of Sep 30 which is a relief. Also booked the dog into be sterilised as she is due to come into season around January and it is best to do them mid cycle. Poor thing, she will just get over that and we will havve to put her into kennels for two weeks, maybe more. Havent heard about the house yet as the owner is away on holiday, so just waiting, waiting.
food has been good so far this week, lots of vegies, lean meat, and no alcohol or chocolate so far.

Good looking legs there Dixie. We can do this. Good luck with the challenge and the landlord situation.

I remember driving from Manchester to London once and it took nearly 6 hours. The funny thing is my husband and I are used to traffic like that living in California. London is strictly a train ride type of trip from now on though whenever we visit my in-laws up north.

thanks Anne

this picture is creating a storm in the UK, I dont know about the US.
It is of Lizzie Miller, in the September issue of Glamour. It is untouched, and she has shock, horror, a belly. At 5'11 and 180 pounds she is similar to me, although I weigh more now. but is so refreshing to see a normal body in magazines. She is also very pretty, but I was shocked to hear she is considered to be 'too large' for plus size modelling, as they only use size 10 oe 12, what hope for the rest of us?
Lots of walking today, and off now to watch DH play rugby.

A g-string strap. It is kind of sad if she's too heavy to be a plus-size model though.

I didnt even notice the g string, til you mentioned it, but it does look weird.

I did a Body Pump class this morning at 9:30, I wanted to sleep in but Im glad I went. The class was packed, so much so that there were no benches left and people were borrowing weights from each other. I only want to do Pump until I move house, because I figure it will be mcuh easier to do a program like NROLW then. So far I have 6 weeks til we move, then maybe 2-3 weeks at MIL's so maybe November I can start NROLW.
looking forward to starting the challenge next week, although I kind of started this week I didnt have the disclipline down pat to do nutrition and exercise. Next week i want to do circuit classes and 2 pump classes, and eat clean with no wine or chocolate until Friday night. It should be doable as DH goes away tomorrow and comes back Thursday night, and I usually get tempted to drink when he's around.

For some reason this strikes me as quite funny!

I see what you mean DH has a pathological obsession with wine. When we moved from Australia he brought 430 bottles with him, which the majority is stored in a cellar that we cant touch too easily. So when he comes back from being away sometimes he will stop by the cellar and pick out 2 bottles of really nice french/ aussie wine, and I really like pinot noir and cabernet at the moment... so sometimes I'm having the wine, slobbing out on the sofa and I think, mmm what would be nice with this is a slice of cheese/chocolate insert your own temptation...
so anyway... I felt so stiff today in the pecs and quads that I just took Lily for a walk in the morning and night. I was going to do a circuit class but I will do something tomorrow. maybe a circuit I could do at home.
The challenge starts tomorrow , yay!
