Where in Ohio are you Ginny? (you can PM me if you prefer not to post it)...
Back from karate... ALL throws and falls tonight... the "mat" is not exactly soft. Owwwwww... Some nights I REALLY think I'm too old for this! Came home, drank my PWO (yum!) and foam-rolled... showered... going to bed. Too tired to overeat (even though DH is chomping away on something he cooked up that actually smells pretty good).
Oh, man, I love salads! You're talking my language now! I have HUGE amounts of greens growing to supply my habit but I really can't wait for fresh tomatoes to pile on top. Yum!
Today - Stage 3 B2. Done as paired supersets to minimize boredom and make it more challenging. Rested about 90 seconds between supersets (I can't make myself do 105, especially when I'm time-crunched).
Bbell RDL / Row - 3x6 100#, 100#, 110#
Partial 1-leg squat - 6, 8, 8. Might try holding db's next time, or just stick to increasing reps and focusing on form / depth for now
Wide grip lat pulldown - 3x6 @ 130#, 130#, 140#. Form not great at 140, so might stay at 130 for 1st 2 sets again next time.
Back Extension - 3x12 bodyweight on roman chair
YTWL - 3x6 w 5# db's
Abs - done as superset of all 3 exercises.
Cobra - Skipped - no time, no workout buddy to cheer me through. barely got to work on-time today anyway!
HIIT - stairmaster 8 sets of 30/30 at level 3/10. REALLY struggled with this today. Partly from workout before it, but mostly I think because karate was so tough and I woke up SORE from hitting the mats repeatedly last night.
Brought my lovely ready-to-mix salad to work - can't wait for lunch! Only bummer is the avocado was WAY too mushy to use today
Nice job with the workout. Did doing these as a superset help? I'm getting ready to plow back into it all with stage 5 next week and am concidering the superset. Especially since S5 is 4 sets of 4; I'm really going to try to increase my weights on these though, so the rest might be nice...Things to think about.
Bytsi,
It was fun catching up on your log after being in Neverland this week (no internet)--your workouts look great as always, and you really do a lot in between! I'm really impressed...

C'mon Ohio gals (and guys)!!!
I actually live in Northern PA, but I'm game to at least consider a meeting weekend!
Not having a good night with food here... hungry. Gave in and ate popcorn (200 kcal) after I had eaten just enough to be on-target with cals and macros for the day. And there is some really good-looking ice-cream too - damn kids! I'm TRYING to resist... I hate being hungry.
I actually spent way too much time today (at work) reading about body bugg... wondering if maybe I should just buy one (but DAMN they are expensive!) and wear it so I could know, once and for all, how many calories I burn all day. Then maybe I could figure out if I'm over- or under-eating (or just right?). I'm NOT losing pounds, which I want/need to lose. I am getting stronger, and my bf% & measurements were SLIGHTLY improved last month... I'm just scared. Ice cream won't help either.

The superset helped me. It made it more challenging (since I feel that I can't necessarily increase weight without losing form and hurting myself on most of the exercises). AND I can't deal with sitting around between sets for that long when I know I'm gonna barely screech in to work on time. Honestly, if I hadn't supersetted, I wouldn't have had time to do ANY HIIT (as it is, I skipped the prone cobras).

Hey Jane - sounds like we might have us a group here! Fun!!!
I will not eat the damn ice cream... I will not eat the damn ice cream... I won't... I won't... (keep chanting... sigh...)
Ice cream is my weakness! My DH loves it almost as much as I do so there is usually some in our freezer. I just try not to think about it being in there. But every once in a while I sneak a bite. Its soo good!
I also wanted to tell you I didn't find the B workout on stage 3 all that challenging either. I wear a heart rate monitor and it didn't get my heart up nearly as high as previous workouts. You are not alone. I will check back to see if you come up with any more ideas on how to make it a little more challenging. (I also didn't rest the recommended time.)

I did my first 5B workout yesterday (same as 3B with more sets, fewer reps, longer rest periods - 2 minutes!). The supersets went pretty well and made the workout pretty challenging there toward the last set in the superset. The 2-minute rest periods are much needed, though.

If you don't want to buy the body bugg, my spreadsheet tool will do the same thing for you. You have to measure both weight and bf over a period of 2-4 weeks for it to be accurate though. I know pretty exactly what average I burn a day.
Oh and btw... If you are not losing any lbs and your workouts feel strong chances are really, really good that you are eating at mantainence right now or better. (wink)
Oh see now... Here is an example of where it would pay off to have some of my fake ice cream in the fridge ready for the eating. Would it be just as good as the real stuff? No. Would it stop you from eating the real stuff? Good chance and you would put good protein in your body.

Bytsi--I did the same thing last night. Did you manage to resist? I did resist, but only because I lost the battle on Monday night to that rocky road ice cream left over from my son's birthday! I hope you did better than I did.
I'm taking today off from working out. I have a big belt-test in karate tomorrow and they are going to try to destroy us both physically and mentally... so I need to be relatively fresh for it. I'm pretty nervous - my prep hasn't been what it usually is (because of the dojo moving and grand-opening, we didn't have as much practice time on weekends)... our school always has people failing tests, and I haven't - yet - so I have to accept that it's a possibility. If I fail, I just have to try harder next time and figure out where I wasn't strong enough. I don't know anyone who made it to black-belt without failing at least one belt test, and I only have 2 tests left before black-belt...
I'm NERVOUS . My conditioning is as good as it's going to be (done less cardio than usual, but strength is good)... it's just a matter of not passing out and remembering everything and looking stronger than last time and not getting hurt.

We always have ice cream because my kids demand it. They are both quite lean and fit and active, so I don't deny them (plus my DH would just buy it anyway!)... sometimes it calls to me, which is ok IF I've allowed for it in my day. But yesterday there was no room for it .
I didn't eat the ice cream last night, but I did still overeat again in calories - I probably shoulda just had the ice cream and been done with it. Instead, I ate a "healthy" snack but I think I ended up with more overal kcals than if I'd just had a small ice cream serving.
Beesknees - the only thing that helped was supersetting, but I guess I can't love all the workouts, right? Since we do tons of pushups in karate, I decided not to add any more to the main workout, for now...

I'm not looking forward to 5B because I just don't like 3B. I will continue to superset though... 2 mins after a superset isn't as bad as 2 mins after EVERY exercise!

You sound like my mom with the ice cream. We had a "disagreement" -- I wanted her to give my kids healthy after-school snacks (back when they were younger and she helped out). She said ice cream was healthy because it's milk. I KNOW she never thought that when I was a kid!

Thanks Karla... I'm still debating the bodybugg - will continue to for a little while, I guess... I don't have a good way to measure my bf regularly (I have a friend at work do it, but I can't "abuse" that privilege).
LOL about the maintenance eating... I just want to get an idea of where I need to be once and for all, and then not feel guilty about eating what I should. When I go a little over on kcals, I want to know if it's because my body is pushing me to eat at maintenance and I was trying to starve it, or if I am just being a pig, stop eating and suck it up

Good idea to be fresh for your belt test. You can do this. When you know your body is ready, the big thing to focus on getting ready is the mental part. (And just because no one's made it without failing before doesn't mean it always has to be that way Show 'em how it's done, Bytsi.) Good luck!
Bytsi, I go to Akron U for my bodpod test next Friday!
That's so cool Jane! Let me know how it goes - I may just call to do it too... I'm trying to take Fridays off for the summer (don't have official approval yet), so I might even have time to go!

Thanks guys... I can only do my best, the rest is out of my control. But if I kick ass that won't be great - the ass is generally not considered a scoring target in our sparring style . Seriously though, in some weird cyber-space way, it helps to know you are cheering for me (or threatening me, or whatever )
I'm testing alongside mostly 18-25 year old boys/men... only one or two other "old" folks like me, and only one other woman that I know of... At least I'm not on the bleachers like the other moms, right? We shall see... it's all about the judges thinking that I've improved enough since last time, and not f---ing up my kata (if I make a mistake on any kata, it's an automatic fail)...
I won't know my results til Monday night at the earliest, and if I talk to Sensei before that, he won't tell me and he'll just try to freak me out (he loves to screw with people's minds )...
Gonna take a shake with me - chug it when we get a 10 minute break between the main test and the katas at the end... Other than that, it's nonstop. If you step off the mats for any reason (including broken bones or puking), you're not allowed back on and you automatically fail.
Good thing for today -food is on target and even if I eat a TINY evening snack, it won't be too bad... and I walked a mile today at work (it was slow, so I went on the track and just did laps) even though it was an "off" workout day... so I don't feel TOO slug-like, even for a rest day.
Can't wait to hear how your test went. I avoided the ice cream landmine today. I had to run sound for a presentation and the group had an icecream social afterwards. I did not look in the direction of the icecream and sundae ingredients table...
Hi Bytsi,
Just caught up on your log this morning
Good luck on your test, you will do GREAT! and I am going to look up the body bug thingy too, but if you say they are pricey I prolly can't get one either
I have Karla's tool though and have been tracking so we will see what it says too. I have only my bf scale though, which I know is not accurate, but it's all I got
Bytsi, I just wanted to add my support/cheering. You'll do great !
I'm with you on the ice cream landmine--DH and kids love it and all are active and fit with no reason not to eat it once in a while. I plan on trying Carla's recipe out soon.

I'm back from the test... wiped out... I am SO down on cals/water today, it's not even funny... BUT I'm going out to dinner and I'm gonna eat whatever the heck I want. I earned it!!! Even maybe ice cream
This morning I got really nervous... made a nice bowl of oatmeal and then ate 2 bites and tossed the rest in the trash. Tried to sip a protein shake, but barely choked down a few sips... Stomach was a wreck with nerves...
Test was at 11. Ten people testing (all senior ranks from about 4 different schools) - about 9 or 10 Sensei's from various schools there to judge us. It was brutal. Very physical. Probably the most physically exhausting test I've been in yet - and others felt the same way. I almost puked on the mats about 45 minutes in, but somehow I didn't.
Realized pretty early on that I was getting dehydrated, but no water break, so I had cotton mouth and got kinda loopy by the end. We started with falls and then a jump-kick series (both very taxing), and it never let up. Instead of starting with "1000 hours" (an endurance test) like they usually do, they threw that in the middle . Ugh. It was just nonstop pounding with no moments to catch our breath. Lots of hitting the mats hard, lots of heavy lifting (throwing)... I was starting to think my conditioning was off, but then I realized the person I was working with was getting up slower and slower after every throw...
The first half lasted just over 2 hours with no break, no water. I was soaked... on auto-pilot going through the techniques by the end - brain wasn't firing... The last part of the first half was sparring (which we usually don't do in testing). No gear, "no contact." Which ALWAYS means you get hurt "accidentally". And I did. Took a knee or elbow or something to the top of my foot (around the 4th metatarsal I think) and OW. Huge purple lump, can't walk very well.
Then finally 10 minute break and back to do kata. Kata is all-or-nothing. If you make a mistake, you fail. Luckily, I didn't make a mistake. Still don't know if it was good enough though (deep enough stances, enough power, intensity, yadda yadda yadda)... My foot was pretty sore, but I had to just do it anyway.
It's not just knowing the stuff (although that's important) - it's making it look like it would work and you could really defend yourself. At the end, our Sensei talked to the group about how failing a test isn't a bad thing, that some people have a longer journey than others, and it's not a comment on your personality or anything - just that you need more time to learn and move up. I always worry he's talking to me - as you progress, they hold you to higher and higher standards, and I've seen some people who I thought did great at tests get told they flunked.
Anyway... I'm home, ice on foot, showered, ate a little bit...
All the support and cheers mean a lot to me, so thanks... I'll know more hopefully after class on Monday night...
I'm hoping I can get a shoe on tomorrow to do my workout!
Whoa... That is some really intesnse testing. I had no idea it was that kind of brutal. I might actually respect the belts more knowing this... Not that I disrespected them in the past only thought they were somewhat easier to earn....
