I still don't understand why he couldn't use one of the benches with the barbell on the overhead rack? Anyhow, I couldn't afford to stand around waiting because I had to get to work so I used one of the barbells on the benches with a little creative manuevering. I just straddled the bench and bent over to get the barbell on my shoulders. It's a good thing I'm so short... By the time the guy got back from the bathroom, I was almost done. I still want to know why he had to use the only squat rack for not squats.
See here is where you and I differ. I totally would have talked to this person when he returned. There is a good reason to use the squat rack though if there are no other spotters around and the gym doesn't have safety devices on the bench presses.

Hi Pauline-

Just stopping in to see how you're doing. I'm glad you had a great time in Maine and hopefully things are working better with the new schedule.

I was going to move up to 80, but in order to grab the bar, I have to stand up (short arms) and I couldn't get the bar down with 80 even when I was hanging on it. What's up with that? Any suggestions?
Hi Pauline! Long time no "see!" How's school going? I feel like you in the scheduling department--between school, work, housework, and activities, there's no time for me to do "my stuff!" Though I have been working out pretty regularly since vacation.

So I agree on the above question--I'm using 120# on the lat pulldowns for stage 6 and if I try to go higher I can't quite sit down... So here's the second request for suggestions!

Maybe it's time to try assisted pull-ups/chin-ups instead?

Assisted pull-ups and chin-ups are great.
I actually had BF help me pull the bar down so that I could sit a couple of times. Then I discovered that if I put my legs under the bar that you normally hook your legs under while doing pull downs, I could use my legs to help pull the bar down. I don't really know how to explain it very well, and I'm sure it looked funny, but it somehow worked.

Hi, everyone! Sorry to be mia for so long. School and work are killing my schedule right now!

Thanks for the suggestions. I may try to the assisted pull up thingie. My negatives are terrible. As it stands now, I don't think chin ups are in my future...

Thanks for the thought that the guy might need a spotter, Karla. I didn't think of that.

Stage 6-B-2 October 2, 2008

Warm-up 3 minutes on treadmill

Reverse lunge, one dumbbell on shoulder Sets 1-3 25/8
Dumbbell two-point row Sets 1-3 25/8
Dumbbell push press Sets 1-3 15e/8

Back extension Sets 1-2 45/8
Reverse incline Sets 1-2 BW/10

My weight is holding steady - maybe dropping just a tad which is good.

Hey if you're doing the lat pulldown with almost your body weight, chinups can't be too far off! You'd be surprised!

Hope school calms down for you soon--we are crazy here too. Seems like the kids have been behind on a few things since we started, but every time they have a chance to catch up, we end up having to schedule an activity or dr visit during the school day...I think this weekend will be great for us to get caught up and reorganized. (Of course we also have company and 4 soccer games, so maybe I'm being over enthusiastic.)

Good to see you back Pauline.
I totally agree with Celeste, if you're doing pulldowns at almost your body weight, chinups can't be too far off.

Thanks! It just seems so impossible when I can't even do a negative for 20 seconds.

Crazy busy with school still but surviving.

I can barely manage the negative, but I do 5 chinups and I just got to a pullup this week... one doesn't rule out the other - try it!

Thanks, Bytsi! I may just try it...or at least the assisted pull up machine thing. Today I did a bit better on the first set, but not so much on the second 2. I think I'm counting too slow...

Stage 6-A-3 October 4, 2008

Negative chin-up Set 1 20s Sets 2-3 10s

Underhand lat pulldown Set 1 75/2 Set 2 90/1 Sets 3-10 75/2

Barbell split squat Sets 1-3 65/6
Push-up Set 1 Smith#3/6 Set 2 Smith#2/6 Set 3 30degrees/5 1/2

Today was a tough workout for me. I worked to fatique on each exercise barely finishing the pulldowns and push-ups. I didn't attempt to increase the weight on the bbss because I didn't know if I'd be able to get back up! But I worked out even when I didn't feel like it, so that's OK!

Ill be taking a little side track for 30 days. Leigh Peele is starting a 30 day challenge for a small group of people chosen from those who commented on one of her recent blogs, and she invited me to join! It's a definite cut, so who knows what will happen before next month's check in. I'm not exactly sure when it starts, so I'll just keep doing Stage 6 until Leigh's challenge starts. I'll keep you posted!

Good luck with Leigh's challange. I got the invite email too but decided it wasn't for me at this time, so I didn't apply. I'll be interested to see how it goes for you though!

Pauline, I posted this before, but I'm having forum troubles and it got lost. There is an article link in Rebecca's (rtwilson) log about chin-ups. It is a lot like stage 6 (I think because Alwyn wrote both workouts), but focused on just chin-ups. Here is a link: Comprehensive Chinup Workout Guide - Men's Health.

OK, I just have to tell everyone even though it's a bit pathetic...I did 3 regular pushups 2 days in a row!!! 3 real pushups!! I can't believe it! First time ever.

My little boy turned 25 yesterday!!

Stage 6-B-3 October 9, 2008

Warm-up 3 minutes on treadmill

Reverse lunge, one dumbbell on shoulder Sets 1-3 25/6 (went really LOW!)
Dumbbell two-point row Set 1 25/6 Sets 2-3 30/6
Dumbbell push press Sets 1-3 15e/6 (couldn't get the last one up!)

Back extension Sets 1-3 45/6 (grabbed the plate lower for deeper extensions!)
Reverse incline Sets 1-2 BW/6 Set 3 10/6

I'm getting excited about starting Leigh's 30 day challenge. I sent pictures in today. I have to tell you I am surprised at myself for not even blinking about the pictures anymore. I even left my head on! It was so hard to post them here with all my buds for the first time. I figure if it will help people learn and be encouraged, why not? It's the same rationale I used when the midwife wanted to film our last birth!

Nice work on the pushups! I was feeling down about some of my lifts last week but the biggest thing is to remember how far you've come and that most people out there can't do this stuff.

One of the best pseudo compliments I have ever heard was when one night I was getting ready in my bedroom, and my husband has some friends over and they were in the living room, and earlier that day I was telling a girlfriend about NROL4W, so we had the book on the coffee table. One of his friends asked about it, and my husband said "Oh Bree is doing that, she could outlift me right now!" I don't think he intended on me hearing it, but it totally made my day for him to tell one of his friends that!

Bree, that is such a great compliment (though perhaps unintended to be heard). There's a Proverb that says "Let another praise you and not your own mouth." It means so much more when our loved ones notice and applaud our hard work.

Thanks, Bytsi!

I went for a run today outside. I did intervals of 1 minute fast jogging and 2 minutes walking. I guess I was out about 25 minutes or so. It's so much different and harder than on the treadmill. We live in a very hilly neighborhood that isn't climate controlled like the gym.
