yep jill, challenge pics will finally show change this time!!
pauline, I am still doing Precision nutrition, but on chest days, I am adding some bench presses. I am trying to improve my bench for a running event that gives you time off your 5k when you bench 60% of your weight. 30 sec for each rep up to 30 reps! that last workout was a PN crossfit style type thing. those are inserted in the program every now and then. I made some decent muscle gains on this in july and august, and now I am cutting fat.
thanks ginger! feeling awesome still.

Hi Wendy, just checking in . . . Glad to hear that your new muscles aren't really only "pretend muscles." I get what you're saying, but it sounds kinda funny, KWIM?

the walk was a mammoth trek against ridiculous winds with white caps in the river and all!! ed and I enjoyed a 'bucks then afterward we went to our local market, where I found some cave aged emmenthaler cheese to grate on my frittata in the am!!! only takes a little, the vintage gouda from there was beyond excellent in tomato soup last week.

thanks karla!! good thing I didn't believe you when you told me my muscle gain during PN was mostly water!
I do think that what I am doing now is MAINTAINING my muscle. I don't think I am gaining at all. my dry lean mass number is up slightly like 0.2 pounds, but I think with error and all, I am maintaining.
but the gains I made in the first 9 weeks were real, because now with some fat gone, it is visible.
lyle mcdonald does talk about overweight beginners having a propensity to lose fat and gain muscle at the same time, though. I know this won't last forever, but I am enjoying it now!

Hey Wendy, thanks for thinking of me. On school nights, my life is all about the kids with homework, activities, etc. If you want to walk this weekend, let me know!

I acknowledge that I am super proud of myself for continuing to love and respect my body no matter what the scale number says, no matter what society says I should weigh. I am so grateful that I pursued all of the sports that I have in an overweight body. I am so glad I didn't wait until I had "the body of an athlete" to pursue sculling, crew, running, swimming, triathlon, adventure racing, weight lifting, lacrosse.
sure, there is a rush when I look at the scale and see numbers that I haven't seen in more than a decade. I like wearing different sizes. I am sure that when I return to running and training, my mile times will be faster.
but here's the deal--fat loss sucks. it is uncomfortable. I hate it. leigh peele is right. lost dog is right. of course we feel like shit, we are on a diet!!!
and here's the biggest newsflash--for me, this fat loss thing is a total experiment. while I enjoy this body I am in today, I am totally not willing to live in a diet to stay here. so if I am able to find my happy place and go back to my nice happy PN style of eating and maintaining, with slow gradual body recomposition, and maintain this new lower weight--cool! but if I have to live in constant restriction, I am SO not going to keep this last bit of weight off.
I believe that working on these issues have been key to my long term success. I weighed 228 in june of 1999. since I lost this weight, I have never returned to a state of obesity that compromises my health. and part of that reason is that I don't set myself up for failure. I am a formerly class II obese person. getting to very low bodyfat for me is certainly within the realm of possibility, but it would take a different kind of effort for me to stay there compared to someone who has never been morbidly obese. it is just the way it is. so learning to negotiate that edge between your desire to look and perform a certain way, with the realities of what it takes to get there and stay there--those are the big unknowns for me.
what I do know, is that at 44 years old, I am in the best shape of my life, feeling the most comfortable in my body ever, loving the support that I have received here along the way. and confident that no matter what happens to my body composition, I will have a total blast pushing myself in different sports, hanging out with like minded people who love fitness and sport, preparing amazing food that fuels the activity and supports health. life is totally awesome!!!!

oooh, so fall has fallen in the forests of old florida. the air is less humid in my little forest. the creek level is wicked high, and the mosquitos are in remission. perfect for a wine kayak tonight with the man, or a half day excursion to the sugar mill ruins and the swamp tomorrow. miles and miles of hiking near the sugar mill ruins, and then kayaking to the cypress forest-the perfect place to eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with the wildlife.
going to the intracoastal could be challenging, because we would have to portage--fitting under the little crabbing bridge gets dicey when the tides are high and the water levels are high.
halloween will make three years that we have lived here in our little chunk of old florida state park. I am so grateful that we made the move.

Kudos to you Wendy. It takes a healthy dose of self respect to set your definition on what's healthy for you. You are in a beautiful place because you know you can maintain. I wish more women felt your kind of freedom
We are enjoying this weather too. I am shocked at the water levels too and the flooding of the marsh at the Tomoka River. Enjoy your day. It sounds lovely!
