LOL!! Your avitar reminds me of this saying I see on my friend's wall.

"Sometimes a cigar really is just a cigar"

Today I did a nice little 10 min mile run for 60 minutes. It is so nice to have some longer cardio back in my life. It is such a stress release for me. There is this awesome little paved trail next to my work. It goes through a wooded wetlands area and in that area the trail turns to boardwalk. It is wide enough for 2 people to walk side by side. I love running on that as you can hear your feet hit the boards and the boards have a nice give or spring to them.

Today I am running and listening to my feet when I hear this faint buzzing sound. It sounded a bit like a downed power line buzzing away. I became alert and the sound got louder and louder until the buzzing was so loud that I could literally feel it under my feet. I stopped and looked around for the powerline. It was then I realized that the buzzing noise came from the wings of bees. Lots and lots and lots of bees. I have never been amongst so many of them. I took off a hell'n but then stopped and walked back a bit to assess the situation. At the top of this tree I could see a swarm so there must have been a honeycomb up there somewhere. It was actually pretty cool.

I then did the rest of my run with very little else happening. At one point there was a low flying duck (maybe 5 feet above my head) flying along with me for about 30 feet. That was pretty funny and I got to really see how funny ducks look when flying. They are almost fat for birds. I always enjoy the wildlife on my runs and today I was blessed to have this awesome experience without even one sting to remind me of it.

Hi Karla-

I'm looking forward to squat night next week. I may or may not work out, depending on what time I can show up at the gym.

I'm getting back on the wagon after an extended break...

Meh. It's coming along slowly but surely with improvements every day. Well, every other day anyway. LOL

Well if you can't get there until later we can back it up an hour or so. Let me know when you do. I am looking forward to it!

I'd have DIED!!!
I have a severe bee phobia... I probably need therapy just to deal with my fear of bees - I'm gonna have nightmares just from READING about your run!

I too have a fear of bees and even an allergy to yellow jackets. It was just that this was so surprising and so big and powerful that fear only happened for a little while when I first realized what it was. Then I was just completely blown away by the whole thing.

In fact I keep coming back to it in my mind. The buzzing was so loud from these guys that you could literally feel it. I had never seen anything like that before in my life. Amazing...

I had the chance to workout yesterday after my guitar lesson with my teacher and BrentV. It is funny that we say that we workout together. What we really do is go into the gym and disperse to do our own workouts and then meet up afterwards. We hardly speak to one another at all, though we occasionally spot or assist with some form for each other.

Warm SuperSet 3x15 (30 sec rest)
alt toe touches (each leg)
back extensions (+10lbs)

Deads
1x10 (115lb)
1x10 (135lb)
2x5 (155lb)

Swiss ham curls
3x15

DB push press
1x15 (15) e
2x10 (20) e

Ab Superset 3x15 bw
V-up
bosu ball crunch and reach

db single leg romainian deadlift (each leg)
1x10 (20) e
1x10 (25) e
1x10 (30) e

HIIT tready run 20 min 1 min at 3.5, 1 min at 7.5, did 3x at 8 mph (HR top was 170)

A couple of notes here that are worthy. The first one is that I felt pretty weak for this one. I believe this to be attributed mainly to my diet. I have been struggling this past week with my food demons. Unlike many of you girls my demons do not have me craving food rather they tell me to stop eating. My stomach shuts down and I just don't want to eat. I watched over the course of this week as my daily calorie intake went from 2300kcals down 200 k each day until I was sitting at 1600 kcals a day. This is a far cry from the 2300 that my trainer instructed me to maintain. I was pretty down on myself especially on Friday which was my worst day. I even thought about firing my trainer and giving up on myself.

I remember the last time I had a struggle for a week during my bulk and I had to stand before my trainer and show him my food statistics for that week. He did not get upset at all with me. He could tell that I was already mad at myself and so he told me that while it was an issue that I was trending downward that it was only a week and I could repair this just by jumping back on it. I lost a few weeks of good quality bulk time for that 1 week and I even had to extended my bulk another month but I did bring it around.

This time it wasn't quite as bad I think. The scale is trending downward and so is the bf from what I can see. On average for the week I did manage 2000 kcals per day which is only 300 k less than his recommendation. I just did it in a cyclic way as opposed to consistent way. So yesterday I managed to get a good feed in and got 2100 kcals of quality food. I was a bit low in macros and high in carbs but I think the workout will have offset that a bit. Today I intend to continue to get 2000-2300 kcals in.

As I was in the gym yesterday I looked into the mirror and the old demons were very strong. I almost gasped because all I saw was how fat I was. This is so ridiculous. I am the same hot body that I was last week in reality but in my mind I saw all this blubber around my middle. I hated what I saw and my first reaction was to stop eating. I made myself eat anyway. This sickness is going to take some time and effort to get around but I intend to get around it this time. We are going to do this cut slow and steady and with maximum health.

On a completely different topic, in the evening we had the chance to see the Portland Baroque Orchestra perform some of the Brandenburg Concertos. Ahhhhh.... What a perfectly wonderful way to top off the evening...

Wow, Karla. Sorry the food battle is such a tough one for you at times BUT it sounds like you're facing it head-on and will have it kicked! It's the most difficult things we overcome that teach us the most -- and give us the most pride later on.

On the subject of bees... I am a complete freak about flying things! I hate bees, wasps, birds, moths, you name it! I had a wasp get caught in my bra about 10 years ago and sting me and guess what? It happend again last week!! Wasps are boob addicts, if ya ask me.

OMG........I could have written that! Don't forget BATS!!! I even took a class to try to get over those flying things, but it only made more afraid.

Karla.........This is a picture from last summer. Our house is in the background and the tree is in my neighbor's yard. I heard the buzzing and couldn't figure out what it was. My DH ran and got his camera to take the picture. I ran inside. What you can't see is me peeking out of one of the upstairs windows because I wouldn't go outside......lol

The cool thing is, that isn't a hive..........they just swarmed in around the queen to protect her (sort of what you were saying happened to you). Then they just hovered there. The neighbors waited until dusk and then sprayed them with a bee spray and we had what seemed like a million bees on our patio the next morning. Totally freaked me out.

Okay........enough about flying things. I do hope you talk to your trainer and get your mind set right with your eating. You are stronger than those demons and have to fight hard to do what is safe. Just think of everything you've accomplished so far.....and, just keep remembering how much you have changed and love the new skin you're in.

Karla, I do that mirror thing, too. Why can't we see ourselves as we really are instead of how we imagine ourselves to be? It's something that I have to make a conscious effort to do sometimes...to dwell on the things that are true...

The whole bee thing sounds so cool - I guess you can tell I homeschool. We'd have made it a project!

Karla, good for you for coming back from the negative food/body place. It really takes time. I've had so many ups and downs, too. You're doing awesome.

Guys, thanks so much for the support. I did not realize how broken I really am about eating and taking care of myself before this adventure. I don't know where this stems from but I don't really care at this point. I am just going to take it one day at a time and make good planning and good decisions each and every day.

The past two days were good days for me. I hit 2000k or better both days. Yesterday I had a redneck workout (taken from Diane) on my farm. I have a few acres of garden and lawn to tend and nearly 40 acres of brush and planted forests that I have to go over. Yesterday was lawn day and I cut, weeded, weed whacked and did a big burn. We have a wood pile that has been accumulating for years that I am slowly burning away. I could not just light the whole thing up due to the dry and windy air so I dismantled it piece by piece and made a smaller fire that I kept going all day long. I also had to lift some nice and heavy rocks to get plastic under them and shovel bark shavings as well.

I worked from 9:00AM until 8:00PM pratically without a rest at all. I managed to drink a lot of water and to break for food every few hours. I slept like a rock last night. It is a good kind of tired. My hammies are tender from Sat workout and now my back is a bit tired from lifting so much wood and rock. But again it is a good tired.

Today my plan is for a nice 1 hour ss cardio run at lunch and then to rest tonight. Tomorrow is QUAD KILLER day and I am looking forward to lifting again. I debated lifting upper body tonight but I think I will take it a bit easy for one more day.

Oh yeah and this morning I weighed in at 131.8 and 18.7% bf. I think that is a 2.3lb total loss for last week. That proves that I need to keep the cals up.

Indeed, eating well/right is harder than working out. About the only thing you can do, as you said, is take one day at a time and make good decisions every time. You're doing so well - keep up the great work!

karla, one of the best things I ever did for myself and my food demons was start therapy in january 2003 with a therapist who specializes in eating issues. I have been going every two weeks since, and it has totally transformed my relationship with food.

and it is the reason why my progress is so slow--cutting calories for me is rather dangerous. i have to do that very slowly over time, or else I set up the tendency to overeat.

Thanks girls. I have never done therapy of any sort in my life. I don't know if I am ready to it now. It may be the case I am still in denial that there really is a big enough issue. Or maybe I just don't want to get into figuring out what this is about at the core. I just want to get into the fixing of the situation now that I am aware that it exists.

I feel like I can overcome this if I continue to stay aware and open to changing my current truths. This is my first "cut" (or diet if you will) ever where I will not just stop eating and run like crazy. This is the first time in my life where I am taking time to think about my own health. It is a weird paradigm but I think I am up to it. Weird is good because it signals that there is change happening. I spent all evening yesterday cooking up really good meals for the week so that I always have food at the ready. One day at a time...

This is the first time in my life that I was able to show immediate scale movement. Every other time it would take 6 or more weeks to even make it budge. It is amazing what a revved up metabolism will do for you. Of course now that I am getting the cals up to where they are supposed to be I might see less of a loss in the next weeks.

BTW: Yesterday I logged a 1:20 hour run at about 10 (maybe 10.5) min mile pace. It was very nice and initially my body was really sore after the run but a few hours later, all was well. Today my hammies are still a tiny bit tender from Sat workout so am doing quads tonight and no cardio.

Karla,

I can relate with your feelings a bit. For me this bulk has been the hardest thing I have ever done. Being a "fat kid" almost all my life and then losing a bunch of weight 3 different times, seeing the scale go up scares the hell out of me. I know I could have done better with this bulk if I just trusted the program and not the scale, but in the end I have learned a ton through this journey.

I am sure you will look back at yours and see a stronger more confident person. I think you found the key though, focus on yourself and take it one day at a time. Remembering your past will always lead to a clearer future.

Good luck!! and Great run yesterday. I love the over hour runs, helps clear the head.

This is what I can't wait to have.........a revved up metabolism!!! I bet you will see losses. They might be lower but I'm sure they will stay steady with all of your day-to-day planning. KUTGW, Karla!

Thanks for stopping by runner friend. I wasn't really a fat kid but I was a kid that did not eat. I too will do much better on my next bulk. Tonight I was in the gym with a few other women from this board and all I could think about was how much fat I had gained. Sheesh... It's ridiculous. I am so much bigger in muscle mass too. Once I do this first clean and proper cut I am sure it will be easier to stuff my face next time and not freak out on the scale.

I love Portland. It is a great city with great people. Tonight I had the pleasure of meeting Lisa and Linda from this board. We had a mini-JP summit. Our goal was to get a good workout in that incorporated both deads and squats. My need was to drill my quads really good so we made up a workout that did all these things. I did not write down results and the rest periods were somewhat long since we were working in 3 people but here it is.....

Warmup Super set
alt toe touches 3x15 (each Leg)
bw squats 3x20

Squats
1x20 (45lb)
2x10 (135lb)

Deads
1x15 (95lb)
1x12 (145lb)
1x8 (155lb)

db Bench step ups (25lb) e
3x10 each leg

Russian Shuffle (until I gave myself really bad quad cramps)

The community center in the N side of town is really, really nice. Everything is brand new with attention to detail. Even the toilets are even European with the 2 flush modes. Lisa and Linda were great sports and let me play trainer for the night. I had fun trying to troubleshoot form in the squat for both of them. I think we actually made some improvements. Their deads looked great to my eye and the only thing they need to do now is to lift heavier.

As for me, I took it rather easy tonight. On the squats I had some fear with the 135 weight for my first set so did not go as low as I could. I did somewhat better the second set but still am not totally happy. I did not have a mirror to watch my form which is weird and it was a new gym so I was fairly distracted. That is my excuse and I am sticking to it.

Tomorrow I think I will do at least another good run and then get some ab workouts in. Thursday I see an upper body workout in my future. Ahhhhhh... This is quite fun.

Eats for the day were awesome. Prepping the food yesterday made the day pretty easy. I did not quite reach my calorie levels but it was close and the macros near perfect. Right now I am munching on my fake chocolate ice cream. Just add coco power (I use dark from Hersheys) and some stevia to non-fat cottage cheese and blend until smooth like pudding. Put in freezer for about 2 hours and enjoy like ice cream... Ummmmm...

Don't worry it will happen for you too with all your hard work. For me it was a simple matter of eating enough and then keeping that up for awhile. Simple but not so easy...
