I'm so sorry to hear about Sophie! I have a little dog too (10lb dachshund) and I worry that some aggressive big dog will take it the wrong way when he wants to play and.. agh. I know that would break my heart I am so sorry. Good for you though for getting back on track and refocusing yourself. Life will go on and there is no sense moping Feel better and remember all the good times

Correction: I was deciding between Maximum Strength (Cressey) and Power Training (Dos), not Starting Strength (which I refer to quite a bit for form, but wasn't considering the training program yet). Both MS and PT are good books IMHO, and I'll certainly give Maximum Strength a whirl, as well, at some time. Some of the exercises in MS were going to be difficult to do at my gym, however. With PT, everything is very doable.

I was looking at Maximum Strength & would be interested to see what you think about it if/when you try it. I'm still going to do Starting Strength but it's always good to know about other programs.

Jane, I am so sorry that I'm late on this. Poor poor Jane and Sophie. I am deeply sorry. You might know that recently we had to put our pets down, so I totally feel your pain. I'm sorry!

I'm just sick for you about your puppy. Just sick. So sorry.
I just bought Max Strength too and will be starting it after NROLW wraps up for me. My hubby already started. We really like the way the whole program is set up, especially the incorporation of the specific warm ups. I can't wait to get started with it!
I'll be interested to see how PT goes for you too.

Yeah 4x10 is definitely a long workout. Incidentally, why is the snatch 4x5 and the rest 4x10?

Not sure, Tom. But the first exercise is always an explosive exercise and I had several to choose from (cleans, snatches, etc). Since, I like this one, I went with it. In weeks 4-6, we go to 4x3 for the explosive and 4x6 for the others. For weeks 7-9 we go to 4x5 and 4x8 and then in 10-12 we end with 4x4 all the way down.

Ah ok - gotcha. Makes sense, since that'd require more effort/coordination - and it's good it's gotten out of the way first thing. I like what I'm reading of your descriptions of this book, I might pick it up.

You should, Tom. What I really liked was that I basically built my own program using the templates and exercise choices provided. Dos gave me the workout and the exercises and what order/reps/sets/etc and I just filled in the blanks. And, there are full-body routines or split or push-pull routines for each regimen. I really like the way the book is laid out. It's a good read, too.

I've not much time to post the past couple of days but had to stop by and check on ya.
Now I see a new book (PT) that I'm going to have to check out and, knowing me, it'll end up on my wishlist. I'm such a book nut. Have fun with the new workout!

I picked up a copy of Power Training back in Feb from Amazon (they have it for $13.57). I have only had a chance to skim over it. I was contemplating using it for when I was done with NROL (which I am). I am heading out of town (to Cincinnati) all next week for some training for work and will take the book with me and read it at the hotel. I need to get back to the gym and into a new routine.

I'm so glad you're back.
And anytime you recommend something, even if I don't get it, I keep the product in the back of my head for future reference. That's because I know that you definitely rate stuff critically. And yeah, I do think Nutrition Now should put you on the payroll. They are right around the corner from me and it took you 1000+ miles away for me to know about their product.

Jane, first of all, I am SOOOOOOO sorry about Sophie. I just can't imagine the sorrow and pain you are feeling from such a traumatic event. You are in my prayers.
Second, I have Power Training, and although I think it is a great book and well laid-out, 4x10 is a LOT of volume. I have been on Dos' board and somewhere he does say that if you are not used to that much volume to build up to it, or to just drop one set to make it more like what you have been doing. You don't want to burn yourself out dieting and doing that much volume. JMO.
Sending you some hugs and warm fuzzy thoughts ...

You guys, I just can't seem to get with it. I am so exhausted from being sad, but I just can't move forward. Haven't been to the gym, despite having a new workout plan in place. Food choices have been WHATEVER. Just blah since Sophie died. We'll see if I can muster up some energy tomorrow.
