The DBs should be held at your sides. When I do DB deads, The DBs hang near the sides of my legs, not completely like a neutral grip, but definitely not pronated like when I'm holding a BB.
They can be done as a regular deadlift (think trap bar deadlift) or more like an RDL. I like the RDL variation with DBs.
