The other day i was given six free protein bars upon purchasing my regular bag of protein powder. Now i'm not a big fan of pre-made protein bars, but i figured that i could probably use them up by eating one after an early morning plyometrics session.

The problem is that despite being supposedly 'low carb' (7g carb per bar), there is 9g glycerol and 14g maltitol.
My question is are these simply empty calories, and are they used by the body in a similar fashion compared to other sugars such as dextrose ie in terms of raising blood sugar levels etc?
