I'll have to look into the books and programs for children and fitness. A few things I've noticed just from visiting friends with small children for a week or two, doing my calisthenics routine while there, and then seeing photos of the kids doing handstands and push ups (it's been almost two years since I was there) because they want to be like their "uncle Kevin":
Kids are impressionable and if shown a great role model in physical fitness, can develop a great attitude of exercise and healthy living as a lifestyle at an early age.
Second, kids are playful. How many great, healthy movements do kids already do?-monkey bars, running, etc. Incorporate that into exercise. Make it fun. A little competition and goal setting (ie doing a few more push ups than last week or month) should be fun and positive reinforcement for youth.
An idea that I'm still working out in my head is to possibly try to secure grant funding to develop a program to combat childhood obesity in my area. Work with kids that are at risk for or already obese, and have their parents there to watch and participate with them to try to develop some good family exercise habits and keep them on track.
