I've never had the phones part go out, generally for me the cord/wire gets tweaked and I lose a channel unless the cord is "just right".
Don't have any suggestions except to weigh the relative expense for "workout" headphones - I'd hate to tweak an expensive pair if I can go through 2-3 pairs cheap-but-acceptable per year at 1/4 of the total cost of nice 'phones.
