Depends how you define 'nearly dying.' Lots of hobbies and activities have a chance of dying. Obviously the scale slides up and down, but each person had their own definition of 'nearly' I would think.

For example, I've surfed since I was 5ish years old. Dying never even crosses my mind, even when dealing with large surf. I have friends who will never ever try to surf because they consider going into the ocean where there might be sharks as nearly dying.
