krista, that sucks that your gym won't tell you if you're not training with them. My gym has these hand-held devices to tell you that are always available for use, but I use a Tanita scale I have at home. My work had someone come in from Kaiser during one of their wellness days, with computer device where they put two leads on your bicep and it used infrared light to determine the weight of your skeleton, internal organs, lean muscle, fat and hydration %. (What a wake-up call - my skeleton weighed 2 pounds less than the goal weight I had in my head!) Anyway, the Tanita scale was very close to the numbers from the Kaiser device. I don't expect any home device to be 100% accurate but if I'm using it consistently (same time of day, etc.) than at least it will give me a rough idea of how things are changing.
