As a guess, I would think the issue might be related to overtraining (i.e. training for that marathon instead of consistent 10 Ks, or the high level athlete reaching peak conditioning). Eventually, the body just wears down. Cross training and moderation might be the answers but its tough to say. Maybe nutrition is a factor (e.g. avoiding fats, oils at all cost - maybe effecting production of synovial fluid in the joints).
With the four baseball players who have suffered the injury in the last year, three of them were because of overuse. Only Alex Gordon's was a blunt trauma injury.

It's the twisting and the torque put on the hip socket to swing (Utley and Rodriguez) and to throw (Myers), and it just wears down after time if it's being stressed too much. Of the four, Gordon has the best long term projection of health, because he's youngest, but most importantly, because it wasn't an overuse injury.
