iirc, at least for a lot of them, it's the stuff you take home and use that has the calories… because they all contain a substance that's used to deliver the sweetener… because the amount of sweetener is actually really, really tiny. So, the sweetener they use when they make pop has no calories because it doesn't have this other substance in it, just the sweetener. It's therefore supposedly the deliverer that contains most of the calories, because there's very little sweetener. If you had a lot of the sweetener without the delivering agent, it may also have calories in large amounts, but not in the tiny amounts you'd use in a serving size.
At least, that's what I recall the explanation was.
