ouch. yes, i've definitely experienced this before, but it was because of an injury. last skii/snowboarding season, on my last run, i took a hard fall on pure ice and landed on my right side. immediately afterward and for the next couple of days, it felt like i had bruised the right side of my ribs and was having a hard time breathing. about a week later, i was laughing and all of a sudden i felt what you felt and nearly fainted because of the pain. it turned out that i bruised my right rib(s) badly, but didn't break anything. and because a doctor can't do anything to bruised or broken ribs anyway, i just had to wait it out. i had to take two weeks off lifting because the pain was just too much. about a month later, i was still having mild pain, but it didn't stop me from lifitng. it took a good three months before i was fully healed and even then, i still had pain on my right side when i would foam roll.
i had this injury back in dec '08 and i didn't heal until the end of March. now im good, but now and again if i foam roll a certain area on my right side, i will still get a slight pain. it is one bitch of an injury, which im sure you're realizing. one thing to try and do is raise both your arms up over your head. if you can do it and still breath with just slight pain, then it's just a bruise. if you do it and you experience severe pain or can't breathe or if you can't lift your arms up over your head at all, then you may have some breaks.
again, even if you have breaks, you could go see a doctor for pain meds if you need them, but they can't do anything else for ya other then tell you to rest.
hope this helps and take it easy on yourself for a couple weeks if you're in pain.
